NO to Legal Zoom, Quicken Loans, Pro-Flowers & Carbonite - Yes to Lifelock
he American Spectator ^ | 3/6/12 | Jeffrey Lord

Yesterday, we informed in this space of what was going on behind the scenes with the CEO of Carbonite. CEO David Friend's real actions as recorded in the books of the Federal Election Commission completely rebuked his alleged reasons for dropping Carbonite's sponsorship. His thoroughly documented connection to Ed "The Slut" Schultz, MoveOn.org and other fanatically left-wing smear groups belied his indignant words.

This is not the case with Lifelock CEO Todd Davis. What does a peep at Mr. Davis's FEC records show? Why – horrors -- the man has given money to Arizona conservative Republican Congressman Jeff Flake's U.S. Senate bid. And to the famously crime-busting Rudy Giuliani's campaign for president.

Backups should be encrypted. If the company is ethical (I know, big IF) then they don’t have access to your files.

People would be really bored with mine, anyway.

Using a company , a,liberal one and letting them back YOUR files up and then LETTING them see YOUR files is plain stupid. Agreed.

You either missed my comment about the tornado or you've never seen just how many miles a tornado can relocate stuff. If a twister hits your house it won't matter if your external hard drive is plugged in, not plugged in or in a different room.

A couple of years ago a small town near here got hit with an F-3. The town's one and only bank had it's vault sucked up by the twister and it was found one STATE over, in pieces.

I'm guessing if one's external hard drive ends up buried in mud/debris 50-60 miles away from the computer it backed up, it's gonna be hard to recover files.

I am sorry you lost your home.

Happily, we didn't lose our home. The fire (and water) damage was in another part of the house. It was the power surge that fried all of our computer-related electronics.

As it turns out, we were able to recover the backup drive via one of those high priced clean-room data recovery services (covered by insurance). The near-miss spooked me enough to convince me that I needed off-site backup.

That was good news. I am happy it wasn’t worse. We lost computers and televisions 3 times in two different houses. Lightening ran in on the cable.

One strike was so sever that it melted the outlet and left a burned in smoke pattern up the wall. The cable guys said they never saw anything like it. For two weeks, different cable guys were coming in just to see it. My wife finally put a stop the show and banned any more site seeing tours.

We were really fortunate that the house didn’t burn down. Lightening is amazing and seriously dangerous.

Indeed! Given what the surge did to three computers, a printer, and our external backup, I thought it strange that our wiring and outlets weren’t damaged at all. Also, part of the lightning’s path from roof to ground was along a natural gas pipe. The fire was sparked along this pipe, but there was no damage to the pipe itself.
