Authorities in California say a 33-year-old San Diego County woman has been killed by a cannonball fired by her husband and another man.

U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/xllWgA ) reports the woman was found dead at about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday after the ball slammed into her home at the Twin Lakes Resort mobile home park in Potrero, a tiny community near the Mexican border.

Her name hasn't been released.

Cast iron is not suitable for cannons. They are made from solid billets of brass or steel usually, and occasionally out of ductile iron.

>> “You get two similar makes, models and weights, bury one upside-down, fill the hole with black powder or Pyrodex, put the other on top, base-to-base, with a little bit of cannon fuse extending from inside the charge to the outside of the anvils. Light the fuse and the fun ensues.” <<

I’ve had this theory about you for a few years, and I believe that you have just confirmed it. :o)

>> “Back in the day (1940s) when you could buy the real thing...” <<

.
Back around 1948 or 49, around the time that I was about to start kindergarten, we were watching the labor day parade on East 14th St in Oakland, when a guy near us finished off his beer, stuffed a big firecracker in the can and lit it, and handed it to the woman next to him.

It blew her hand off. Messy!

Was that what you meant by “the real thing?”

What I meant by the “real thing” was that the cherry bombs offered for sale back then had real power, not the imitation stuff offered as cherry bombs today.

I never said the things were not dangerous.

I was just looking at that particular cannon, with a very small bore in the middle of a hellaciously wide barrel. You could almost build that out of wood and it would still work.

That was back when they didn’t mess around with such malefactors either. Doubt he saw daylight for 10-15 years.

One hopes not anyway.

The general feeling in the crowd appeared to be that he needed one taped to his neck.

Remind me to tell you sometime about when we built a trebuchet capable of launching a junked vehicle on the grounds of a wrecking yard after a tornado passed through and there was nothing left to damage but the damage itself.

Now, that was fun.

That’s Grand Rednecking (and doubtless even in a less weatherbeaten junkyard there would still be specimens eligible for such treatment).

Counterweight was a cement truck that broke down under a full load and was never emptied. Guess is maybe 90,000 lbs. plus.

Needless to say, we had access to some pretty heavy equipment. Superstructure was crane parts. Axles were clearly rail car. Pulleys were probably out of a huge drilling rig. Linkage and drag line was steel cable the diameter of my wrist.

Sadly, those days are probably behind me, but there are a few of us around here to remember. Unfortunately, 4 or 5 of the perpetrators are no longer with us ( I just turned 60). Last I looked, the superstructure and counterweight are just where we left them.

Not that long ago, maybe 2005.

Wish you were there.

So far all Elk has built are destructive devices; I think he ought to be managing the west wing.
