Pretty much all the results in, and Schmidt is behind Brad Wenstrup 43%-49%.
Anyone see this coming?
Was it a Dem on Dem hate crime spree?
Did they argue about whether taxes should be 98% or 99%? Did they argue about how many industries should be state owned?

I didn’t see this coming, Mean Jean lost the primary. I don’t know anything about the guy who defeated her.
In other news, Dennis “The Menace” Kucinich was defeated in the primary and Mary Jo Kilroy lost her bid to return to Congress. There seems to be an anti-establishment sentiment in Ohio.
Brad Wenstrup ran a credible race for Cincinnati Mayor in 2009 against the Democrat incumbent, but lost 54-46%. Interesting that for a city of only 300k or so that it will have 2 members of Congress (as Wenstrup is the presumptive favorite in November).
Not much to cheer about as far as I can tell in the reconfigured 3rd (why the OH GOP decided to cede the Democrats a seat in Columbus when they could’ve attached more GOP areas to the existing seat(s), I have no idea). A Black Dem lady won that, and she’ll probably be an ideological twin of the ultraleftist Marcia Fudge from Cleveland.
She is from the other side of town, I am in Chabot country. Jean Schmidt wasnt a very good rep for our area and she has always been dogged by “ethics violations”. Her most disgusting habit has been to camp out in the gallery for the SOTUA and then go get kissy kissy with Bush (which was understandable) and even with 0bozo. There was even a funny radio ad that parodied that habit of hers.
Brad Wenstrup seems like a good guy, a fellow Vet so definately a plus in my book and he ran quite a good campaign against our local limp armed mayor. Fingers crossed that he will be a good conservative instead of a GOP lapdog but I think he will be just fine.

I’m not that surprised. Schmidt nearly lost twice to democrats in a strongly republican district.
Well with Jean S gone we should be able to stop worrying about a rat upset in that district. I didn’t know Wenstrup was running against her. If I had I wouldn’t have been very surprised that he won.

I’m not sure it’s good for us to have the loud insane voice of Dennis the Menace out of Congress. How the hell he did get that hot redheaded wife? I know she’s a commie but she must have hit her head the day she met him.
Joe the Plumber will face (and barring magic badly lose to) Kaptur in the general.
Oh let’s not overlook the GOP Senate primary.
Mandel won with 63% of the vote while intrepid real estate agent Donna Glisman placed third with 12%. I have to hand it to her, she almost edged out the guy I was certain would come in second. ;D

It is long past time for the States to reassert themselves and tell the JD to take a hike, that they will redistrict as they see fit.

Jean Schmidt was seriously injured in her first term as a congresswoman when she attacked John Murtha as a fraud. Everyone went after her, since, so they said, Murtha was a “hero”.
It turns out that led to her being challenged in the repub primary ever since she was first elected. That always depleted her resources and left her vulnerable in the general election.
With the redistricting, she probably planned to go light in the primary in hopes of having resources for the general election.
It also turns out she was right about Murtha and all the republicans who attacked her over it were proven wrong when Murtha accused our Marines of being cold-blooded murderers.
She also had a LIBERAL rating group that attacks conservatives list her on their own rating system as one of the most corrupt members of congress. She received legal help from some outfit that she was supposed to reimburse. She didn’t know some law group was defending her over something or other, but when she found out, she turned it in for a ruling by the House DURING the Pelosi years. They took about a year to return a reply.
Let me say this. My Army son and his unit and many others in our area have been deployed time and again since 9/11. Jean Schmidt has been to every gathering, every deployment, every return, and that EVEN IF it involved just a few people from her district. She personally met with each of them, talked with them, worked with their family support groups, and followed after them.
I have nothing but good to say about extremely strong pro-life candidate Jean Schmidt. She was a huge friend to the military. She was among the most staunch pro-lifers out there.

The Romney turnout must have done Schmidt in. Is Wenstrup a conservative?
Having two Representatives from Cincinnati isn’t *that* odd, given how the city was split down the middle so as to elect two Republicans. What’s Miami’s population? I think that from 2002 to 2010 (and maybe still to this day) there were three Representatives (all Cuban-American Republicans) who lived in Miami (until two years ago, Mario Días-Balart represented a district just outside Miami, but he lived in the city).

What Republicans *should* have done is to draw an “uber-Democrat CD that stretched from Cincinnati to Columbus, by way of Dayton and Springfield, and it would be 57% black (I drew one with a redistricting ap on the Internet), making it impossible for a future legislature to unravel. It would pack so many Democrats into that district that it would make every surrounding district comfortably Republican, and leave GOP turf to shore up the Ohio River CDs. As it is now, the horribly gerrymandered CDs for Tiberi and Stivers should be safe for the decade, but the OH-01 could be competitive (especially if Chabot retires or runs for higher office at some point), while the OH-06 was not shored up enough and the districts south of Cleveland and Akron are still winnable for the RATs.
But the OH GOP wasn’t brave enough to draw the Cinci-to-Columbus CD, and now with the nomination (tantamount to election) of a black Democrat from Columbus it will be very difficult to do this later on, since “Columbus voters have shopwn that a black-majority district is unnecessary for black voters to elect a member of their choice” and “drawing a Cincinnati-to-Columbus black-majority CD will eliminate the possibility of a second black Representative being elected in that portion of the state,” or something.

Glisman would have won had Toledo conservatives not registered as Democrats to vote for Kaptur over Kucinich.
I disagree. I live in Dayton, and while it is Dem, it isn’t overwhelmingly so, and Turner was mayor not too long ago, and this time we have a good shot at electing two council members out of three. If blacks turn out, yes it will go Dem, but if they don’t, Republicans can win this. I would hate to see us consigned to always being a useless outpost of Dem governance.
I would only include the heavily Dem parts of Dayton (many of which are black-majority) in the black-majority Cinci-to-Columbus CD. If you live in a heavily Dem part of town, well, you’d have a Democrat Congressman, just as you’d have a Democrat state rep and state senator.
As it is, Dayton had to be split among two CDs (Turner’s and Boehner’s) to keep the Dems from winning, and the GOP counties that had to be appended to the Dayton CDs to make them GOP-majority could have been used to make other CDs more comfortably Republican. It is inefficient for Republican redistricters to include Republican or marginal precincts from Franklin County in a Democrat CD instead of overwhelmingly Democrat precincts from Cincinnati, Dayton and Springfield.
I looked it up, and the population of Miami (the city itself, not the metro area, thus comparing apples to apples with Cincinnati) was 362,470 in 2000 and 399,457 in 2010. I also confirmed that at all times since the 2002 elections there have been three Cuban-American Republican Congressmen who resided in Miami (Lincoln and Mario Díaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen from 2003 to 2011 and Mario Díaz-Balart, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and David Rivera since 2011). And I was surprised to learn that Kendrick Meek is listed as a resident of Miami, and that his successor in Congress, Frederica Wilson, is listed as either a resident of Miami or Miami Gardens depending on where you look. So from 2003-2011 Miami had four congressmen despite having a population of below 400,000!
