Woman reportedly arrested for painting fingernails on Southwest Airlines flight
FoxNews ^ | February 7, 2012

A California woman on a Southwest Airlines flight was reportedly arrested and detained after a verbal confrontation with a flight attendant regarding her nail polish.

Jeanie Daniels told WOFL that she was painting her nails in her seat on a Southwest Airlines flight from California to Texas last month when a flight attendant asked her to stop. Daniels then went to the bathroom to finish and later began arguing with the flight attendant, who waited outside the bathroom.

Daniels was handcuffed and detained for more than 10 hours when the flight landed in Houston.

"She started screaming at me and wouldn't stop,” Daniels told the station. "I said I'm sorry, I apologize and I put it away. About ten minutes into the flight I discovered I only had two nails left to paint so I thought well if I went to the bathroom and did it, it wouldn't offend anyone."

The odor and flammability could be issues.

“So what’s the big deal about nail polish?”

...in large enough quantities it could be splashed on the pilot and set on fire. ~sarc

In a tight, cramped, possibly fully occupied 737 with nowhere for other people to go for a breath of fresh air?

"Passive nail polish huffing" might be a good term for it.

It's something you have to experience to appreciate. Honestly I wish the airlines would explicitly say it and maybe even put up a sign. "No nail polish on the flight. Do 'em when you get to the hotel."

Common sense would dictate that painting finger nails on an airplane is hazardous for 2 reasons. First, the odor is contained and everyone has to smell the odor of the fingernail paint for the duration of the flight. Some people won’t mind, others will mind, and some may be adversely affected in a confined space. Secondly, if there is some turbulance; the paint will spill and permanently damage the tray, seat or carpet. As a passenger, I don’t want to sit in a seat that is covered with wet, or dry fingernail polish.

So, it’s a fairly selfish and stupid thing to do. This is something that could be done elsewhere, that wouldn’t stink up a confined space and wouldn’t be on a moving platform.

What is the Flight Assistant supposed to do, when you politely ask someone to stop - and they essentially tell you to go #@$% yourself? If you allow it, you have no authority - so you have no choice but to escalate things.

Nothing, if you are accustomed to huffing it. /s

She wasn’t arrested for the nail polish. She was arrested for flagrantly ignoring the authority of the flight attendant.

Jeanie is an idiot. Forcing others to inhale these fumes is very inconsiderate.

Don’t tell me; let me guess...

Davis is NOT a Muslim, is she?

If she were, the Stewardess would have apologized for disturbing her and the airline would have paid out a $5 million settlement to CAIR. And she would have not only painted all her fingernails enroute, but have her toes all done prior to arrival as well.

In an enclosed space, the fumes can be very strong. No person with the slightest bit of consideration for her neighbors would ever think of painting her nail on a plane.

Some polishes have overwhelming smell and with the circulatory air system in a plane that smell would spread through the cabin.

There's a reason why so many nail technicians wear masks.

You’re in a self-contained, pressurized environment. What IF there is a freak spark? couldn’t that lead to a major problem? Even though whatever is in the polish is of small quantity, wouldn’t the pressurized cabin magnify things? I’m not equating it with what happened aboar Apollo 1 but couldn’t a smaller scale Apollo 1 type event be possible under those conditions?

I'm certain once she was asked to stop, she politely stopped.

From the article:

Officers requested the district attorney charge Daniels with "abusive profane language."

I understand and agree....It just torqs me no end that people like her have no consideration for others. I might be overly sensitive to it but fingernail polish is one of the most pungent foul smelling odors there is to me and that this woman would wait till she was on an airplane to uncork that crap is the height of rudeness!!!

Actually, if she hadn’t cursed at the flight attendent, she probably wouldn’t have been arrested.
That being said....are you allowed to bring nail polish on board?

Good for Southwest. You don’t challenge the authority of the crew on an airplane that is 30,000 feet above the ground.

She was properly arrested. This should not even be newsworthy.
