FAIRBANKS - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney maintained a strong lead with most of the results counted in the Alaska Republican presidential preference poll held today.
With 4,225 votes, the former Massachusetts Governor took 32.6 percent of the statewide vote. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum took 29 percent, Texas congressman Ron Paul took about 24 percent and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich took 14 percent.
At 10:30 p.m., 95 percent of the vote had been counted.
Alaska was one of 10 states to participate in the Republican nomination process today and will divvy up 24 of its delegates according to tonight’s vote.
In Fairbanks, where most Fairbanks North Star Borough election districts voted at the Carlson Center, Paul was the preferred candidate. A wide array of voters — including young and older voters — cast their vote for the libertarian-leaning candidate.
Many voters registered at the poll, either switching party affiliation or signing up for the first time.

I read Santorum’s speech from last night after the primaries. It had absolutely no substance. He rambled about his wonderful family, stammered about his morals and mentioned freedom, and stole several excerpts from gingrich’s speeches on the constitution and declaration of independence. He reminded me of a high school kid running for student council president. All I could think about was him getting that 3 am call that Iran has hit Israel with a nuclear weapon and Russia is mobilizing.
I’m sorry, but you have to ask why Sarah Palin voted for Newt Gingrich in Alaska, since her announced strategy back in January was to vote to keep the process moving, and he had no chance to win anything in Alaska, while Santorum was competing strongly there.
Alaska is one of many states where, if only a small part of the Gingrich vote had gone to Santorum, Santorum would have beat Romney and Romney would be much worse off.
So, why do you think Sarah voted for Newt? It could be simply she really wants Newt to win, and doesn’t want Santorum to win, but you’d think if that were the case she’d just come out and say that.
Why do you say "believed to be"? Do you think there is a significant group of people who have questions on that matter?

Poorly worded on my part...evangelicals are voting for him because they are focusing solely on his Christianity, instead of focusing on his record, his ideas, and his ability to defeat Barack Obama...similar to the way people supported Huckabee because he was a Southern Baptist...
Leadership is not pandering and message craft based on media agendas. Romney is the ultimate “finger in the wind” politician. He has a long record of having positions to placate the press. Just look at who hw appointed to the Mass Supreme Court.
Where are you getting your numbers from? Romney won by over 450 votes, not 120 votes. State turnout was over 12,000, not 4500.
You are correct. Turnout was over 12,000 with 100% reporting. Romney wins by 425 or about 3.5%.

well, I know numerous people who tried to do volunteer for Santorum in MA and they found it impossible. These things are notoriously poorly run.
In MA, the coordinator would not give out a phone number ... so there was nowhere to call. Only emails received saying that somebody would be in touch. One sign wave was organized and it was a “Unity Rally” where they invited Romney people to join them. Silly.
In VT, things went a little better as 7 days before the vote, a phone number was given to call if you wanted to join up.
I hope I have more time in 4 years so that we can overcome these problems.
PS In MA, the threshold was 15% for delegates. Santorum fell short with only 12%. So it cost him big-time.
Sarah has a national following and she is trying to keep Newt alive. But it would have made sense for the Palin-Miller organization in AK to move their support to Rick. THere is no excuse that it didn’t happen.
Then again, the leadership even here at freeper to stop MITT is limited. In VT, the threshold was 20% and in MA the threshold is 15%. So the NEWT votes were not counted. Why was little said about it?

Here’s a good rule for conservatives: Do not support candidates that are well below the threshold. Except in extraordinary circumstances. It seems like a rule FREEPERS like to ignore.

The split vote has given Romney Michigan, Ohio, and Alaska.
and MITT gets 100% of the MASS delegates because Santorum’s 12% is below the 15% threshold for that state. Cost him 6 or 8 delegates. But no excuse for RS ignoring MASS. And all the delegate confusion in OH by the RS campaign.
