MILLER: Buying ammunition in D.C.
The Washington Times ^ | February 27, 2012 | Emily Miller

Posted on 03/07/2012 12:50:23 PM PST by servo1969

In Washington, D.C., it is illegal to posses ammunition if you don’t have a gun registered. It is also unlawful to have ammo that is not in the same caliber or gauge as your legal gun. The penalty for holding a round of the wrong caliber is up to a year in jail -- as stiff as the punishment for illegal gun possession.

So I was very careful not to buy ammunition before I had my legally registered gun at home. Although I wondered about the purpose of the law. What’s the worst I could do with ammo, but no gun? Throw it hard and knock a tooth out?

After I became a gun owner, I needed to find a place to buy a box of 9mm for my gun. The restrictions in the District are strict, but the D.C. gun registry office staff make it more difficult. As I learned, the police who staff the office and are tasked with explaining the gun laws to residents just invent laws that don’t exist.

This thread has just added to the FreeRepublic "bang list" (firearms interest list) by adding the keyword "banglist".

Any time a firearms-related thread is created on FreeRepublic, please be sure to add the "banglist" keyword to it so that interested FReepers don't miss it. Just a suggestion.

Sounds like an 18USC240 action is appropriate here. Get their names and sue them until they're dead broke, starving, and in the streets.

I don’t get it. Where is the danger/problem in owning ammo if you don’t have the gun to shoot it? I own saw blades but I’ve thrown out my saw years ago. Do I go to jail? This is crazy!!!!

It’s a good thing D.C. has such strict laws. Otherwise, there might be violent crime there.

I couldn't live there. I have no idea how many rounds I have, or where they all are, exactly (there is some organization, but just for a few thousands rounds that I keep handy). I have boxes of ammo for rifles that I don't remember details of owning, including that weird Swedish caliber I recently found.

I have bricks of .22LR in use as bookends.

I check my pockets for .22LR before I wash clothes.

How do you get by with a 'box' of ammo?

DC is fornicated.

It is also unlawful to have ammo that is not in the same caliber or gauge as your legal gun.

So when you sell a gun (and the gun shop refuses to even take your ammo as a gift) what are you supposed to with it? Wrap it in a box and leave it on the steps of the nearest fire station?

I guess that the 8 rounds of 50 cal in a belt that I have lying around would be a problem; I don't have an M2 so that's probably a couple of years in the slammer.

The 20mm AP rounds were lost in an unfortunate boating accident years ago....

It’s quite sobering to contemplate on the fact that doing something that is commonplace in most parts of the country could have you ending up in prison in other parts. I can’t even imagine what it feels like to live in such represive anti constitutional places such as DC, Chigago, NJ or Mass.
Like others here, I have dozens of different caliber ammuntion in varying quantities. To think that I could serve a prison sentence equal to a murderer or child molester for something as mundane as having a can opener in the kitchen drawer is mind boggling to say the least.

Washington D.C. has essentially banned gun ownership since 1976 and has a murder rate of 56.9 per 100,000. Across the river in Arlington, Virginia, gun ownership is less restricted. There, the murder rate is just 1.6 per 100,000, less than three percent of the Washington D.C. rate.

The first thing that leapt to mind when I read that was .41 Vetterli rimfire in copper cases, that I used(?) to have a box of, but that's Swiss I think.

Wouldn't want to break the law. Better stay outside city limits. In fact, shoot without leaving the comforts of your home town!

The object is not to prevent crime, but to make the ownership of guns so onerous and legally dangerous, that the number of legal gun owners will be whittled down until they are no longer a viable political force.

If the 'box' is a 20 ft. shipping container, that might work....

Otherwise, I dunno.

I bought a couple boxes of pistol ammo at WallyWorld last night, and the lady in charge of the sporting goods counter handled it like it would bite her...

Sadly, we have a long way to go to get rid of the ingrained hoplophobia out there...

Good thing you have the pronunciation correct or the MSM will attack you. LOL

I think barney fife in the article was trying to explain that she needed her
Cert to carry ammo but then got carried away extrapolating.

But according to the cop suckers on FR, "The police are on our side." I guess if you're a government bureaucrat or another cop they're on your side. Otherwise, I can't see it.

Yep. But I don't think the person was local. Keep in mind that a lot of the non-oilfield jobs here have been filled by people from elsewhere of late.

If you are local, can pass a drug test, and are willing and able to work, chances are you're making far more than Walmart wages.

For a while, things were really tough there, just not enough help. Then they started offering a room with the $12/hr wages and overtime and got some people in--some of them transfers--from all over.

They are decent folks from what I have seen, but such programming dies hard.

I was in the house that my daughter lives in with 3 roommates last week. There was a partial box of federal .22 LR on a desk, along with a magazine for a Ruger 10/22. Glad to see she is living with such fine upstanding folks. Even if they are all weird, it being Austin and all. :)

Thanks for the heads up. Yes, the programming dies hard. My dream is to move to a place where I can shoot in my back yard. Problem is that I grew up in the Northeast and I have aging parents who probably have no interest in moving. Plus my wife (who would love to move to the country too) has her family here as well.

Take care.
