Obama: Auto rule saves $8k 'a year.' Hmm.
politico ^ | 3/7/12 | GLENN THRUSH

A verbal typo by President Obama at today’s Mt. Holly, N.C. speech, but a self-serving one that warrants a quick correction:

“Now, because of these new standards for cars and trucks, they're going to -- all going to be able to go further and use less fuel every year. And that means pretty soon you’ll be able to fill up your car every two weeks instead of every week -– and, over time, that saves you, a typical family, about $8,000 a year,” Obama said.

“We like that!” shouted an audience member.

“You like that, don't you?” Obama replied.

Except it’s not true.

If it were as easy as that to increase fuel economy, and if it provided worthwhile benefits to consumers, auto companies would increase fuel economy on their own in order to lure customers. We would not need CAFE standards.

OK, so when gasoline skyrockets like he wants it to, they’ll pay $85,000 a year on gas instead of $93,000. Nice.

$8K a year in savings? This guy is a freaking dunce. If this had been President Bush he would be excoriated.

But Mr Algae gets (yet another) pass.

Damn, we could save twice as much if only the government would have raised CAFE standards to 100 mpg. If there was a demand for fuel efficient cracker-jack Smart cars, the auto companies would be building them.

Her’s is the early generation that was basically a VW with Porsche badges. (still a great car, got it used of course). We are looking at the new ones now.

It is just an example of what you can get when you cross that $40K barrier.

That’s like when he told Hispanics he saved them $40 PER PAYCHECK by having the SS tax reduction extended. $40 would be the tax reduction on $2000 gross wages. So if those folks got paid weekly they would they would be making $104,000 annually according to him.

Is that what we’re calling a lie nowadays?

Baloney. I spent $8500 in 2009 for a Kawasaki Versys motorcycle. It has gone over 16,000 since purchase (with lots of idle time when I rode my Harley over 12,000 miles). The Kawasaki gets 53 MPG. Nominally 300 gallons burned. At $3.50/gallon, that's $1050 in gasoline. I paid $8500 for my used Harley in June 2010. It gets 46 MPG. Another 260 gallons of gas for $913. The "auto rules" have zero influence on what I paid for the vehicles or their operating cost. What is clear is that those "rules" couldn't save me $8,000 a year. I could buy another bike and keep it fully fueled for that kind of money. My total fuel cost was $1963 for 28,000 miles traveled on the two bikes. Average of 7 cents per mile for gasoline.

Well, he’s partially telling the truth.

Real cars will be outlawed when they can’t meet the future physics-defying requirements and some new “cash-for-clunkers” scheme will wipe out existing cars.

O thinks your family will ride mass transit, save $8000 by not having a car and kiss his feet for saving the planet.

Kind of ironic that he goes to a German company to campaign for re-election. This is the jobs President?

Oil and gas look kinda toppy to me right now, but eventually the way the Fed is printing money, we should see a $200 Happy Meal. I just don't think it's going to happen tomorrow.
