Revealed: Derrick Bell's HBO Sci-Fi Blaxploitation Flick
Big Hollywood ^ | 3/7/12 | Joel B. Pollak

Posted on 03/07/2012 9:14:04 PM PST by Nachum

Derrick Bell, the man whose scholarship inspired Barack Obama, was the Jeremiah Wright of academia.

And a Hollywood cult hero.

Bell was one of the chief proponents of Critical Race Theory, a radical doctrine that holds that American legal institutions—including our civil rights laws—perpetuate white supremacy.

Bell’s ideas were not only radical, but bizarre. After leaving Harvard (he resigned in 1992), he wrote a racialist, antisemitic fictional essay titled “The Space Traders,” which Ninth Circuit judge Alex Kozinski described in the New York Times with disgust:

Imagine, if you will, that space aliens land in the United States and offer ''untold treasure'' in exchange for surrendering all black citizens to them. What does white America do? It votes to accept the deal by overwhelming margins. So says the law professor Derrick Bell, who poses the question in an allegorical tale he calls ''The Space Traders.''

There is opposition, however. Jews condemn the trade as genocidal and organize the Anne Frank Committee to try to stop it. Empathy from another group that has suffered oppression? Not according to Bell. Instead, Jews worry that ''in the absence of blacks, Jews could become the scapegoats.''

Such parables pass for legal scholarship these days…

Brought this out on Free Republic earlier today. Glad the Breitbart crew picked up on it.

Thanks for this post.

There are those that say: Well, if Rev. Wright didn’t hurt Obama..

But Wright did hurt, Obama had to defend, then diminish, then dance and dodge and finally disassociate.

Wright came very late. Bell is much earlier - and he’s a second mentor, reinforcing Wright. Let’s see Obama go through it all again.

This election needs to be about Obama.

I remember watching this film on HBO back in the ‘90s. A truly bizarre spectacle. Now we know the unbalanced individual behind it.

I have started a little research on Mr. Bell.

“Derrick loved teaching and was a beloved and popular professor and advisor at NYU Law. He taught his introductory and advanced constitutional law courses in a non-traditional and non-Socratic style, that Derrick called “participatory learning.” This pedagogy builds on the important work of Paulo Freire...”

Now, when a 9th Circuit judge thinks you’re a leftist loon, that’s sayin’ something.

Great research. It just gets better and better. Next, we will find out he worked with Eric Holder too.

I will say that I will gladly trade Derrick Bell and Barack and Michelle Obama to the space aliens for whatever they will offer.

Heck, I’d throw in Rahm Immanuel, and Harry Reid to prove I’m generous.

A handful of beads and pocket lint will do.

Maybe Holder took a class from him...

Here’s another little tidbit:

“Derrick Bell of Harvard Law School actually declared Clarence Thomas ineligible for the Supreme Court because he “doesn’t think like a black.””

“Why did he leave Harvard ( I thought he was tenured)?”

“In 1980 Professor Bell left Harvard to become the dean of the University of Oregon School of Law. He resigned from that position in 1985, ostensibly as an act of protest against the fact that the school had failed to grant tenure to an Asian female professor. A number of Professor Bell’s colleagues at Oregon, however, viewed this as a contrived, face-saving pretext for leaving a position from which he was about to be fired. They believed that Bell, who had largely become an “absentee dean” known for spending more time on the lecture circuit than at Oregon, was slated for imminent termination.”

@Derrick A. Bell, Jr. National VisionaryIn 1971, Bell became the first tenured professor at Harvard of African-American descent, but left the position in 1992, after a two-year leave of absence that he took to protest the school's lack of African-American women in the faculty. Essentially, he had himself fired for purposely violating a rule limiting the amount of faculty leave time.

Watch the video and then read that snippet again.

More:

“Derrick Bell, the first tenured African-American professor of law at Harvard, was probably more Old Left than New Left, having worked on school desegregation at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. When one of the faculty members associated with critical legal studies was denied tenure, Bell staged a sit-in, causing a leading member of the faculty (and later dean), Robert C. Clark, to tell him, “This is a university, not a lunch counter in the Deep South.” Bell ultimately left Harvard.”

Does anyone else but me think that it's a bit ironic that a minority member, of any country or society, who holds a position of prominence at a prestigious institution, spent their entire existence b*tching about minority discrimination? These people still living in the past are going to drive us all insane with them...
