Imagine if John McCain had whispered somewhere that he was willing to bankrupt a major industry? Would this declaration not immediately be front page news? Well, Barack Obama actually flat out told the San Francisco Chronicle (SF Gate) that he was willing to see the coal industry go bankrupt in a January 17, 2008 interview. The result? Nothing. This audio interview has been hidden from the public...until now. Here is the transcript of Obama's statement about bankrupting the coal industry (emphasis mine):
Let me sort of describe my overall policy.
What I've said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else's out there.
I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.

This will be one of the key ways to know if the Republicans really want the presidency.
They will run this video over and over and over again, with these words straight from Obama’s mouth.
Looks like it’s gone...that seems pretty fast...
He said something similar even before he was elected; this is not new.
This is what he said before the election. It was on the Chronicles website for months. The McCain campaign never found it; it may have made a difference in the election.
You can find it:
No it isn’t.
But what is new is that people know exactly what it means.
This clip needs to be put in an ad in 2012. Play it in PA, OH, WV.
Obama was uncharacteristically straightforward about that issue, and the coal-producing states — except West Virginia — backed him by a wide margin.

The specific audio may have been hidden from the public, but the report of it got out. But there was no stopping the tidal wave of adoration.
bump the thread - keep these damning Obama words in front of everybody
bttt
Better yet, Romney needs to press him about it during... their... debate...
...
Oh, never mind.
Too bad the pubbies won’t play it again and again for the Americans in coal producing states. They don’t have the balls to castrate a pos, poseur creepinchief who is hell bent on destroying this country.
“keep these damning Obama words in front of everybody”
Yep.. aggressive, forcefully and repeatedly.
I realize Sean Hannity isn't everyone's favorite here, but to his credit, he did his best to keep the coal issue on the front burner.
A perfect advertisement would be to run this (with the date) then follow it up with the Lisa Jackson (EPA) congressional testimony on hold up coal permits (with the date), then ask “Are you still going to vote for this President?”
I work in the coal industry and if there is one thing that he has said that is truthful it is this.
I’m a NEWT guy but I’m at the point I will vote for anyone to get rid of this nightmare. This industry and our country cannot sustain another four years of Obama and Lisa Jackson.
and yet West Virginians elected Joe Manchin.
You can’t fix stupid.
