i’m starting to think that they are coming at this from a viewpoint of hating these groups. Thus, they call the groups “haters,” when really _they’re_ the ones who hate. E.g. they hate anti-abortion groups because the groups are telling them something they don’t want to hear and it makes them feel guilty or something. (?)

One of the criteria for hate groups should be the act of engaging in "lawfare".

Lawfare is the illegitimate use of domestic or international law with the intention of damaging an opponent, winning a public relations victory, financially crippling an opponent, or tying up the opponent's time so that they cannot pursue other ventures such as running for public office.
