Core differences so apparent [Industry innovates, government stagnates]

If the first iPad, released in April 2010, were a government program, it would be the most successful Washington initiative in history.

Apple has sold more than 50 million iPads so far, and they are expected to sell another 50 million this year alone. Their nearest competitor, Samsung, is expected to sell just 8 million. In fact, 83 percent of all tablet users in the United States had iPads last year, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The astonishing success of the iPad has helped make Apple the most valuable company in the world. And what is Apple doing with this precious creation?

They’re throwing it out. Again.

This week brought us “the new iPad,” Apple’s name for the iPad 3. The first one just came out two years ago, and already Apple has upgraded it twice. They’ve added higher screen resolution, faster processing, quicker Internet speeds, and all at the same price as the previous models.

Major improvements, all at no extra charge.

Like I said, if the iPad were a government program . . .

But then again, it wouldn’t be.

Washington doesn’t give us iPads. It give us the Postal Service.

The post office is essentially USPS 1.0. It’s been doing the same thing in largely the same way for 200 years without a reboot. And it’s losing $1 billion a month.

Defenders of the postal service point out that they’re not in the “for-profit” business, that they lose money in part because they service small towns and low-income communities.

Apple, on the other hand, is an evil capitalist enterprise. It gets no government subsidies, it doesn’t act in the “public interest” and its only motive is the profit motive. All Apple wants to do is make money.

So let me ask you: If you had to rely on...

The Postal service was a great idea and would have become a profitable enterprise without gubmint subsidies - because capitalist owners would have solved problems and innovated.

There are no problem solvers in government - only tax spending socialists.

I contend the USPS was a successful program - until the unions.

Our postage was cheaper than anywhere in the world and the service was most acceptable.

The unions killed it.

I do a lot of shipping and for the smaller packages, USPS is the way to go. They are quicker and you know what you will be charged when you ship. UPS has numerous ways to increase your charges after you ship and your package sits in a warehouse all weekend.
