Seattle bitterly vows to lobby for erosion of state preemption(WA)

Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes evidently cannot take “no” for an answer.

Reacting today to the State Supreme Court’s denial of a petition for review in Seattle’s appeal of its double-loss in an effort to adopt a city parks gun ban in defiance of Washington’s 29-year-old state preemption statute, reported by this column earlier, Holmes told the Seattle Times that the city will take its campaign to the legislature next year.

“Seattle sought a second look not only on behalf of its residents but for all forms of local governments in the state that want authority over their own properties. We’ll ask the Legislature next session to give local governments the tools they need.”—Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes

This should come as no surprise, since anti-gun Mayor Mike McGinn and his predecessor, Greg Nickels, both appear to be point men for Washington Ceasefire, which desperately wants to strike down the Washington law. State preemption laws – Washington’s became the model for several other states – prevent anti-gun municipalities from creating a patchwork of local ordinances and regulations that are both confusing and contradictory, and designed to entrap law-abiding citizens whose only crime is that they want to exercise their right to bear arms.

It was that scenario that led the State Legislature in 1983 to adopt the first preemption statute, updating and strengthening it two years later, the same year that the National Rifle Association convened its annual members’ meeting at the Seattle Center.

Anti-gunners have despised the preemption law ever since. Nickels, now a Democrat candidate for Secretary of State, was a founding member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

I thank God all the time for getting us out of that gutter cesspool of a state. Coming home to Alabama was like getting released from a Soviet Siberian prison and set free. The feeling of being out of those stupid homosexual loving, socialist loving liberals has been a new life for us. My wife grew up and lived the majority of her life there. Even she was ready to escape that place. She has never been happier than she is now down here in my home state.

The very first time I brought her to Alabama for a visit, TWO things immediately caught her eye. (1) was the amount of churches. Like one on every block. In Seattle other than the big Catholic church you can hardly find one. (2) was that people put flowers on all the graves in the cemetery. Up there you just don't see much of that. There is one cemetery near SeaTac airport, a large one, that we drove by and there might have been four or five graves that had flowers on them. A huge cemetery. Even she could see the difference in living there and just visiting here. When it came time to retire, she said, "we are going to Alabama. I have had it here." Boom, we be gone!

I understand completely...I lived there for a scant 2 yrs and moved. King Co. is the pits and Snohomish isn’t far behind. Anyway, glad I moved...never want to return to the left coast, BTDT, way over rated.

Amen! My wife's family moved there when she was 10. She grew up there, went to HS there, worked and lived there till we moved here. She lived about 48 years in Seattle. She can tell you how the city, community, people, attitudes, etc. ALL CHANGED in the past 25-30 years. How it used to be a wonderful place to be. But, no longer. She has went back for a nephew's wedding and another visit. I refuse to go back. I told her that when I hit the WA-Oregon state line on the way to Idaho and on down to Alabama, I would not go back. The 15 years that I lived there were enough!!! for me. Escaping from behind enemy lines, I do not plan to craw back over there behind them again.

Interesting appraisal. Talked w/ plenty of old timers and they all mentioned about how nice is USED to be. Now its a leftist hole. Prices are thru the roof, liberties are nil exc if your a deviant. I liked going up country to Skagit and Whatcom counties. There was a far more normal population there. The closer to Seattle the weirder it was. I dont miss it a bit. It just wasnt a good place to have kids.

I live in Whatcom County. The County and the City of Bellingham are run by liberal idiots. Liberalism is like a malignant growth that started in Seattle and spread outward. I would love to move to Montana but I cant leave my business behind.

Ive heard that Bellingham was a pit but never much hung around there. I was up around Lynden. Didnt know the liberals had trashed things that far up.

The WA state legislature has been very, very busy working on laws and regulations of the far left, too. It’s not just Seattle.

This week, they were discussing creating a single payer system for the teachers’ union health insurance. The teachers are up in arms. They took a pass on the Obamacare bill after being given an exemption, and now the state wants to create their own single payer system.

I have a theory about this. I think that the single payer for the teachers is a pilot program for a state single payer system, with a state individual mandate.

My theory is that Obama is preparing to back off the federal individual mandate, as soon as Mitt Romney clinches the nomination. Then Obama will call for individual states to enact their own mandate under Obamacare guidelines. Romney will then be left stuttering and stammering with absolutely nothing to recommend him. Obama will win. WA State is preparing for that eventuality.
