The morning talk guy at WVNN in Huntsville said the station was getting comments from as far away as Washington state and Oregon with people saying "They will never listen to WVNN again"

I didn’t write the introduction, however, I would assume the original author did so to respect others, whose religious beliefs would find use of the word “God” spelled out in such context in which it is used as disrespectful.

I’m not a religious sort, so spelling the title “God” (surely, you don’t believe that the Creator, who created all the various species of plants and animals, used all His creativity on that and chose “God” as his name?) doesn’t bother me. On the other hand, paying respect to others who worship more fervently than I or have another point of view on something as deeply personal and fundamental as religion doesn’t bother me. The question is, why does such a respect bother you?

It's done out of reverence, not political correctness.

The custom of substituting the word "God" with G-d in English is based on the traditional practice in Jewish law of giving God's Hebrew name a high degree of respect and reverence. When written or printed, God's Hebrew name (and many of the stand in names used to refer to God) cannot be erased or destroyed. (See below)

There is no prohibition in Jewish law against writing out or erasing the word "God" in English. However, many Jews have afforded the word "God" with the same level of respect as the Hebrew equivalents. Because of this, many Jews substitute "God with G-d so that they can erase or dispose of the writing without showing disrespect to God. Some Jews also use G!d in the same way, utilizing the exclamation point to convey their enthusiasm for Judaism and God.
