UPDATED 1:58 p.m. ET

(CBS News) Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is leading Mitt Romney in the latest poll of likely Republican primary voters in Mississippi, where voters head to the polls Tuesday to choose the candidate they want to take on President Obama in November.

Gingrich garnered 35 percent support in Mississippi, compared to Romney's 31 percent in a poll released Friday by American Research Group, Inc. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum took 20 percent while Texas Rep. Ron Paul received just 7 percent.

Gingrich, who won his home state of Georgia three days ago, has said Mississippi and Alabama are must wins for his campaign, which is floundering behind front-runner Romney and Santorum.

Santorum defeated Gingrich in Tennessee on Super Tuesday, which Gingrich had also hoped to win to jumpstart his candidacy which had not had a win since late January when he won the South Carolina primary.

The Gingrich campaign said it was spending slightly more than $200,000 combined in Mississippi and Alabama on television ads to build support ahead of Tuesday's contests.

Among men, Gingrich has nearly double the support of either Romney or Santorum, according to the poll. Gingrich took 39 percent of men compared to 21 percent each for Santorum and Romney.  Among women, Romney leads Gingrich 42 percent to 30 percent, followed by Santorum's 19 percent and Paul's 2 percent.

Among those who identify with the conservative Tea Party wing of the party, Gingrich took 49 percent, more than twice Romney's 24 percent support. Santorum took 17 percent of the tea partiers and Paul just 5 percent.

The telephone poll of 600 likely Republican primary voters living in Mississippi was conducted March 7 through March 8 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The south don't hanker to fast talkers, trying to pull the wool over their eyes.

And they particularly don't want a sweater vest or some magic underwear pulled over their eyes.;-)

Me too. Southerner and I love History, especially southern & western history. Just don’t get any finer than southern hospitality, charm and manners, especially manners with a smile.

Us southern'rs don't 'hanker to' fast-talkers, but we might hanker for stuff - so ya might say we don't cotton to fast talkers. ~grin~

But, then again we can 'hanker to' pull the rug out from under Obummer.

8^)

Newt could probably make a campaign ad just out of some of the expressions on the faces of us southern folk as Mitt and Rick attempt to wow the crowds. There’s bound to be some Material there.

Mitt gets wound up like the Beggin’ Strips dog and Rick gets into the Brother Swaggart routine. Sheesh!

Put Mitt on the roof of the family station wagon for a 12 hour trip and he will REALLY start beggin'.

Woof, woof, eh Mitt...old boy?

Mitt would lose the Southern vote on the dog problem alone...never mind that he is a cult leader!

I don’t know what your goal is but you’re only turning off Santorum voters so maybe it was always Romney for you.

ke your sweater vest and go away!

Yeah that's the way Newt would like it. During the ten minutes he was riding high after SC he was demanding everyone get out and put all bets on him. Thank God we didn't.

Was coming back from our bi-monthly trip to Sam's Club in Gulfport when the police blocked Pass Road at Cowan. Here come's Newt's campaign bus, plus quite a few state troopers, what looked like several Secret Service SUVs and a chartered press bus. I've worked on presidential campaigns, guarded two presidents, (including AF1 and 2), and lived through many Iowa caucuses, so I knew right away what was going on. I turned and said to Mrs. 2ndDivisionVet "Either Obama's in town or one of the campaigns" and lo and behold, here came his bus!

Some observations, though this is but one poll:

Santorum has lost the Tea Party. I suspect over big government power and the perception of evangelizing.

If you don't like Gingrich, you're likely a woman.

Women react viscerally to any candidate they perceive, even rhetorically, will deny them access to the independence of contraception. They will not suffer condemnation from any politician on the matter. Hell, Catholic women won't even listen to the Pope on the issue.

I was convinced Gingrich lost women over his nefarious, sleazy ways. However, my wife corrected me. It's because he's old and ugly that women don't like him, at least according to her.

According to my back-of-the-hand calculations...with women being almost 52% of the electorate...that means Romney will win the nomination.

Folks, for most people they are electing the prom king. Sad but true.

I predict that next Wednesday morning sweater vests in Mississippi and Alabama will be 50% off.

"No Ricky. Many of YOUR delegates aren't committed and can't wait to get away from you. "

Yep.

Problem is many Social Conservatives have hitched themselves to that train and are all in. All in.

They're going to be broken hearted. Some angry at the perceived injustice.

Many will stay home, some will vote against the eventual GOP nominee if it is not Santorum.
