New Haven Occupiers Not Moving Off Green, Despite City's Request
The Hartfird Courant ^

ome came from the surrounding towns and cities, East Haven and West Haven, Branford and Hamden. Others came from further afield — New York, Delaware or Texas. But wherever the demonstrators came from, they say that they're not leaving the green.

Not by mid-March, as the city has requested, and maybe not ever.

The Occupy New Haven protesters have lived in the upper half of the New Haven Green for five months now, an occupation that has far outlasted the Occupy Wall Street movement that inspired it (protesters were evicted from Zuccotti Park on Nov. 15), as well as occupations in Boston, Hartford and quite possibly every other New England city. Not even the winter was able to roust the residents from their camp, which looks less like a camp these days and more like a settlement.

Structures constructed from tarps, wooden pallets, PVC pipe, and even cubicle walls are replacing the tents, and by extension, the impression that the occupation is anything less than permanent.

The community building — a sort of Quonset hut fashioned out of cardboard and Mylar — offers electric lights, a kitchen with propane stoves and donated or scavenged food, chairs and tables, a drum set, a library and even a movie projector.

Such signs of entrenchment have worried city officials, who sent a letter last week proposing that the protesters dismantle their settlement. Not forever, but long enough, and repeatedly enough, that they would no longer be "occupying" the green, but rather visiting it for periodic protests.

In a "Proposal for Occupy New Haven," the city offers, in exchange for removal of structures from the green by mid-March, the ability to reassemble on the green for periods of up to one week at a time.

If I were OWS I wouldn't expect much to come from this. New haven is a sanctuary city. Why should they worry about a measly protest.

I think the longer the filthy Obamavilles stay up, the more people are reminded how he and his friends have trashed this once-great country of ours. I think if people are reminded that the “Occupy” pseudo-movement was crafted by the Democrat Party to mock the Tea Party, the more people that are going to vote against Obama and the Rats.

The presence of the word “Request” in the headline, ALONE, indicates how far we have fallen as a nation.

Where are Mayor Daley’s baton-swinging bluecoats when we really need them?

New Haven mayor, John DeStefano, just wants to green clean cleaned up in time for Yale’s graduations.

Drove past Occupy New Haven the other night. Mostly the area’s homeless living in squalor. Too bad we had such a mild winter. If we had snow like last year, this might have been over months ago.

Isn't NH’s mayor sort of a stalwart for illegals and getting them drivers licenses? I think so.

No wonder the occupiers have no respect for NH authority, much less decency.

I partially credit the odiferous occupiers for the recent uptick in already high gun sales.

These are the faces you’ll see beating on your door when the freebies run out.
