...somewhere between the baby name game and the gifts, what had been light conversation took a sharp turn toward the personal and political specifically, the battle over access to birth control and other womens health issues that have sprung to life on the Republican campaign trail in recent weeks.
We all agreed that this seemed like a throwback to 40 years ago, said Ms. Russell, 57, a retired teacher from Iowa City who describes herself as an evangelical Christian and old school Republican of the moderate mold.
Until the baby shower, just two weeks ago, she had favored Mitt Romney for president.
Not anymore. She said she might vote for President Obama now. I didnt realize I had a strong viewpoint on this until these conversations, Ms. Russell said. As for the Republican presidential candidates, she added: If theyre going to decide on womens reproductive issues, Im not going to vote for any of them. Womens reproduction is our own business.
.....Rick Santorum, a former senator from Pennsylvania who is one of Mr. Romneys rivals for the nomination, created a tempest late last month by speaking out against prenatal testing. Earlier comments about women in combat and the role of radical feminism in encouraging work outside the home also left some women ill at ease.
Everybody is so busy telling us how we should act in the bedroom, theyre letting the country fall through the cracks, said Fran Kelley, a retired public school worker in Seattle who voted for Senator John McCain over Mr. Obama in the 2008 election. Of the Republican candidates this year, she added, Theyre nothing but hatemongers trying to control everyone, saying, Live as I live....

The only one clearly making this case to the voters is Newt.
It's not that you have a "strong viewpoint" Ms. Russel, it's just that you're easily fooled by a slickly packaged lie. You go ahead and vote for Obama, I'm just glad someone as simple-mided and easily fooled as you aren't in the classroom teaching our children anymore.
” We all agreed that this seemed like a throwback to 40 years ago, said Ms. Russell, 57, a retired teacher from Iowa City who describes herself as an evangelical Christian and old school Republican of the moderate mold.”
BS. This dolt was never a committed Republican. This is just a NYT wishcasting article pushing the memo that the GOP is waging a war against women. If this voter truly exists and believes this, then she doesn’t deserve the right to vote. The fact is that Obama has pushed our country financially to the breaking point and all this woman cares about is the so-called war on “woman’s rights” which shows that she is not very well informed as a voter.
yeah, right.
Needs another handful of smart pills.
Those words are key. Having dealt with retired (and active) teachers from California to Wisconsin, a good many of them are NUTZ. They only believe what their union tells them to believe. And they'd gladly cut off their left arms before they'd vote for any Republican. They are a lost cause.
I realize that I am insulting many ex-teachers who taught for a couple of years during their youth, and this is not directed at them. I'm talking about the ones who spent the bulk of their working lives in the classroom, including members of my own family. They have amazing blank spots in their brains about how the world works, or about the deeper philosophies of life. They only believe what other teachers (and their unions) tell them. We see it every day here in Wisconsin in their battle to unseat our wonderful Governor.
Their deeply held prejudices against business is amazing to behold. These are the people educating our children, and America had better wake up fast.
Lord Moncktons reply was moving. Gently, and sadly, he said, We shall lose the West unless we can restore the use of reason to pre-eminence in our institutions of what was once learning. It was the age of reason that built the West and made it prosperous and free. The age of reason gave you your great Constitution of liberty. It is the power of reason, the second of the three great powers of the soul in Christian theology, that marks our species out from the rest of the visible creation, and makes us closest to the image and likeness of our Creator. I cannot stand by and let the forces of darkness drive us unprotesting into a new Dark Age. Monckton vanquishes Union College Greens too yellow to admit theyre really Reds
“Reporting was contributed by Rob Davis from San Diego, Dan Frosch from Denver, Ian Lovett from Los Angeles, Malia Wollan from San Francisco and Steven Yaccino from Chicago. Allison Kopicki contributed analysis.”
Heh. NYT’s “moderates” = hardcore leftists in reality.
I agree, and we can look to the Commie media to make up many more lies like this one.
“I didn`t realize I had a strong position until these conversations.”
This 50-something had no clue all these years until she “saw the light” with other 50-somethings who think the GOPers are going to restrict their “reproductive rights?”
And because of that, they`re now going to vote for the failed policies of the radical marxist whose goal is the death of America?
Really, ladies???
American voters can be such malleable idiots. Shame on that supposed “evangelical Christian” most of all.
...”We all agreed that this seemed like a throwback to 40 years ago, said Ms. Russell, 57, a retired teacher from Iowa City who describes herself as an evangelical Christian and old school Republican of the moderate mold”...
People like this retired school teacher are our problem. Their ignorance about corruption in politics and the media is killing the country. This woman taught school for God only knows how many years and she doesn’t know this issue is about religious freedom from the chains of government?
When she is in those chains and not allowed to make any important decision about her own needs or well being, will she put two and two together? NO, because people like her will rarely admit that they were wrong no matter how much new information comes forth. Corrupt politicians depend on this kind of ignorance for their survival.
This “moderate Republican” ex-teacher found by the NYT is a phony and part of their Obama propaganda effort. I know Iowa City and Madison. Madison is a little more leftist, but only because it is a 12 on a scale of 10. I’ll bet she is a lefty activist, in the Sandra Fluke mold.
And it looks like we're losing the hearts and minds war.
We have GOT to find a better way or we're going to lose not just the election, but the country.
The reality is as a Conservative woman, I want “them” out of my bedroom too. What I do in my bedroom is between me, my husband, and God. It doesn't include a government mandate making me feel guilty every time I have sex thinking about all those aborted babies I paid for. I don't want “them” telling me how to live my religion or belief system either.
If you want to carry contraceptive coverage...that's your business, but forcing me to carry coverage I believe that is inherently evil is interjecting your lifestyle into my life and my eternal life.
as I understand it, the paper is a paragon of virtue in regards to not spinning the news in the Democrats' direction > sarcasm <
a teacher as an example: Aren't ALL teachers union Democrats ?
I hope all the centrists leave. It is time to believe in the basics of conservatism. Those folks just muddy the GOP water and I am glad they are leaving. She has no solid foundation, which describes those who vote for Obama. Besides, she has a paycheck to vote for.
I've got one or two of those in my family. When you smack them between the eyes with facts from sources that they can't just dismiss, they'll get this glassy-eyed stare off into space for a few moments then totally change the subject and go on the attack again.
Debating with them is a complete waste of time.
A woman has the right to choose her contraception and to discuss her healthcare with the doctor of her choice.
As long as I do not have to pay for it.
If I pay for it, I can then dictate the terms of its delivery.
End of story.
She can have her pills, she can kill her baby. Just don’t expect me to pay for it.
This is just leftist propaganda to help Obama get re-elected, tomorrow we will find out it was a SEUI whore calming to be a republican.
Wanted: Liberal women willing to pose as 'centrist Republicans', who are so turned off by the influence of conservatives that they are voting for Barak Obama. Must be age 40-65 with no visible tatoos or piercings. No previous experience in voting for GOP candidates neccessary. Ownership of minivan desirable, but please cover all bumper stickers from 1998 election cycle. Free acting lessons provided. Frequent work available through November 5, 2012. No travel outside of mid-town Manhattan required. Contact S. Saulny of NYT for more details.
Several points:
1. Ms Kelley is an uninformed tool of the leftists - the leftists manufactured this diversionary flap of contraception. Just ask George Stephanopolous.
2. How believable is it that a retired female govermment drone, a teacher, who lives in Seattle, is a conservative? It's NOT. Most likely, she was swooning at Obama rallies in 2008.
3. The NYT would much rather propagandize on behalf of the White House usurper rather than investigate Fast and Furious gun running - right Pinchy?
What really gets me is their deeply held animosity against business. They don’t trust anyone who earns a living through their own efforts — who isn’t being paid from the public trough with guaranteed raises, vacations, and pensions. It has taken years for me to wake up to that fact. Now that I see it clearly, I understand better how we will never agree politically.
I wonder where they think the “public sector” gets its money to pay them? They never thought it through, that’s for sre.
Why would a 57 year old woman need birth control? Most women are past the age of fertility by then.
“How believable is it that a retired female govermment drone, a teacher, who lives in Seattle, is a conservative?”
How believable is it that any real “centrist” would even consider voting for Obama at this point?
“Centrist” = “Progressive” = “Liberal”
1. She is not a Republican.
2. She is a Liar.
3. She is a Public School teacher (Probably a Lib)
4. This is not about "birth control" it is about Obozo's direct assault on Religious Freedom granted by God and written in the U.S. Constitution in the 1st Amendment by the founders.
I think the NYT made this woman up. I've never heard anyone who wasn't a Women's Studies major talk like that.
This is total bull. The NYT is trying to steer women away from the GOP like the good ole days of Clinton’s “soccer moms”. They are trying to close the deal on the Fluke circus. Only problem is, they were exposed themselves in the process.
The media party can’t win unless Obama can get a portion of the white vote.
NYT drives two home with a double to center field for the team.
Lord Monckton’s presentation was riviting. It is a joy to read the words of a man who uses reason in debate.
They are falling for spin because they are stupid. I’d rather live in “Literal-ville” as Rush calls it. As if all of us are calling for a ban on contraceptives.
Every family has a few of these morons. I have a sister-in-law who retired in her early 50’s from “teaching”. She always is well-intended, but a loon, nonetheless. She (and her liberal idiot husband) are some of the most brain-addled humans in existance. When you attempt to bring facts or realityn into a discussion, they attack or become offended. That I rarely see them is a blessing. Like I need these pod-people in my life. Oh, did I mention...they LOVE nobama.
Exactly. The NYT is just carrying the water for 0. These 'stories' require a willing suspension of belief! And the whole tortured meme that it is the GOP that started this 'fight' is simply laughable. The GOP candidates have merely responded, in constitutional fashion, to the invasion of liberty and imposition of 'state religion' in the form of Commisar Sebelius and her pronouncements of the sordid behavior that religious institutions MUST cover in their health plans. Hey, 'centrist women of NY' (LOL), listen to your Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who says it well .....
NYT would put a headline that the GOP causes leprosy if they could get away with it.
...”If you want to carry contraceptive coverage...that’s your business, but forcing me to carry coverage I believe that is inherently evil is interjecting your lifestyle into my life and my eternal life”...
YES! To take a look at the potential of a government intervention which would take away our right to religious freedom regarding contraception and forcing all tax payers to pay for it even for those who do not want is to suspect it will be taken to the next step before long. What would that be? Look at China. The government could really get into your uterus to live and to determine truly how you use it. I can see potentially forced abortions coming out of something like this. And, when the thought first hit me, I repressed it until I learned that Anita Dunn, the Obama operative, who left the administration after she expressed her admiration for Mao Zedong, had interjected herself into the Fluke situation. They look like communists to me. Wake up America.
...”Why would a 57 year old woman need birth control? Most women are past the age of fertility by then”...
Perhaps she never needed it. Has she been married?
...”I have a sister-in-law who retired in her early 50s from teaching. She always is well-intended, but a loon, nonetheless. Unfortunately, back in the 60s, if you weren’t very smart, you most likely could get a teaching degree..I know a number of C and D students who did. We should have been looking at this a long time ago.
I parked and he pulled around to stop right in front of me. I thought, "Oh, oh! I hope he's not mad at me for driving the way I did or, I hope he's some dimwit Obama supporter that wants to go at me about the stickers."
He asked me where I got the stickers. I said, "Do you agree with them?"
He said, "Heck yeah! Where can I get them?"
I told him where I found them at ImpeachObamaStore.us. We talked for a minute and he went on his way.
“As long as I do not have to pay for it.
If I pay for it, I can then dictate the terms of its delivery.”
Agree with your comment, and it should also be applied to ‘entitlement benefits’. Starting with drug testing for welfare recipients.
Silly Republicans just keep walking into these obvious Alinsky traps set for them. And then Rush foolishly took it to a whole other level. Mission accomplished for Team Obama: ripping away the women who abandoned the Democrats in 2010, with a single, contrived non-issue. And the GOPers handed it to them on silver platter.
More garbage from the NYT trying to make the issue about “Women” rather than the “Economy”. She’s following the DNC Talking Points real well.
Either the NYT is lying (would you be surprised?) or "centrist women" are just not that important a faction of the voting public.
“They only believe what their union tells them to believe”
I found something similar at my old workplace (non-union), only more frightening: the folks there felt and spoke conservatively in conversation (against a welfare state, against big government, and against government intrusiveness) and yet time after time I heard them parrot the main stream media’s talking points against prominent republicans in the news.
These people were so susceptible to whatever the talking heads were saying that they would vote leftist time and again against their own best interests. It was an eye-opener.
MSM propaganda works, and quite effectively. People do seem to be kind of stupid and trusting of the MSM. It’s really disheartening to see.
Really? It seems like every time I've reproduced, there's been a man involved.
If there's anyone on earth more ignorant and addled than a late-middle-aged public school teacher, I haven't met her.
What do 50 + year old woman anyway care about reproductive rights? Aren’t their reproductive years over by now?
I believe one of the worst segements of women is this 50-60 year old age group. These ARE the women who in the last 30 years or so who have aborted their children in such unfathomable numbers. Many of them are still living with their guilt and most are unrepentant, yet rotting on the inside.
It’s a hollow existence at best and denial of facts and reality is the only thing they have left to hold onto.
Any women who feel this way are feminazi moonbats without 2 brain cells with which to spark analytical, critical thinking--but then I become redundant. I DID say moonbats!
vaudine
“Silly Republicans just keep walking into these obvious Alinsky traps set for them.”
Wow. You really nailed it! It is unbelievable how stupidly Republicans have reacted to this manufactured issue. This is a huge win for the alinskyites and demonstrates how uncoordinated and stupid the republican party is behaving.
The alinskyites should have been made to look ridiculous every time they brought up this bone-headed non-subject. But unfortunately this worked so well for them, you just know they will try to gin up another closed non-issue: Perhaps we can expect Stephanopolus to demand that Romney address whether or not state’s have the right to put blacks in the back of the bus...
Let’s hope repubs learned something from this debacle.
