May I repeat??

Nation-building in Islamic lands does not make us safer, its costs in blood and treasure are prohibitive, and it does not work because they don’t want what we’re offering. Our security does not hinge on their freedom; it hinges on their knowing that we are not to be trifled with.

I am not going to worry about freedom and security in Syria when freedom and security in America are being stripped away.

” We will hold sacred the beliefs held sacred by others. “

...on the other hand, you are not allowed to freely practice the beliefs you hold sacred yourself.

We should have stayed away from Egypt, Libia and the rest - all this will come back to bite one way or another.

When are they going to hold sacred the beliefs of American Catholics.

These dolts led by a Muslim president seem to hold Islam more sacred than Christianity. More sacred than human l;ife.

The Obamacare gives an exemption to Muslims from it’s dubious benefits and yet they will garnt no exceptions to people who believe in the sanctity of human life , the Christians.

I never dreamed in my lifetime I would see my Government attack my Church.Attack my Constitution, Attack my God.

This is what Democrats want? This is what half of America is thinking about putting back into the Presidency?

I think of the words Jesus spoke on the Cross. My God , My God why hast thou forsaken us/ But I know the answer.
Because we have forsaken Him. Homosexuals, murdering his children, worshipping the false god Obama and the politicians who are apostate, and worshipping a political party over the Church they portend to belong to.

Sounds a bit melodramatic when it is written, but it is happening before our eyes.

I’m sorry, but the creators of AlQaeda were the Saudis, our “allies”, not the Shia Iranis

I want to defeat our enemies and be done with them. I do not believe we owe it to them to rebuild their societies. The Marshall Plan is not the default model. Nation-building in Islamic lands does not make us safer, its costs in blood and treasure are prohibitive, and it does not work because they don’t want what we’re offering. Our security does not hinge on their freedom; it hinges on their knowing that we are not to be trifled with. If they square off against each other, the best thing for us to do is stay out of the way. I am not going to worry about freedom and security in Syria when freedom and security in America are being stripped away. That is a direct consequence of enmeshing ourselves ever deeper in the Muslim morass. We should stop.

The meat of the issue. I'll add the fact that it creates unnecessary social unrest at home.

McCarthy is spot on with every single word of his commentary.

Particularly “Our security does not hinge on their freedom; it hinges on their knowing that we are not to be trifled with.”

Who among us thinks that the Taliban will not be invited back in after we withdraw from Afghanistan. We accomplished out mission there in the first few months after we drove them out. They got the message that we were not to be trifled with and they should stick to what they know best, brutalizing each other and not prodding the overseas giant with a stick.

No nation building. No fiction of winning hearts and minds because they have neither.Bomb and leave. If they do not get the message then repeat and rinse. Eventually it sinks in.

Andrew McCarthy is one of the few American commentators who understands Islam.

Syria may be a socialist dictator, but it’s a secular dictatorship. The one that would come would be a Jihadi govt

"We will hold sacred the beliefs held sacred by others."

That’s the concluding rally cry of the U.S. Department of Defense’s newly issued guidance on the “Proper Handling and Disposal of Islamic Religious Materials — Service Members/Civilian Training.”

That's Hitlery speaking, not Andy McCarthy. IMHO, Andy McCarthy is the best expert on the evils of Islam and in the devising the best strategy to combat it.

True, and it is not our business. If ten percent of the people can decide who runs a country, time for that clown in the white to pack his bags.

Actually it’s more like 6% — the Alawis. But they are supplemented by Christians, Druze and Shias who support Assad. Better Assad then the jihadis.

Good article by McCarthy, but I think it’s high time someone did an honest assessment and started looking into what is likely to be a pretty disturbing angle to this nation’s foreign policy — namely, the role of foreign money in our electoral process and the influence that money has in U.S. foreign policy decisions that have absolutely no benefit for the citizens of this nation.

If McCarthy is correct in his assessment, and so far virtually every FReeper on this thread agrees that he is and as I have been so posting for years, the inescapable conclusion is that while the Marshall plan is not the model neither are Iraq or Afghanistan the models.

Many of us have already come to the conclusion that Iraq was a gross mistake. At least we have learned that that model does not work. Pity it cost $1 trillion, 4000 lives, and 10,000 limbs to learn it.

I think McCarthy has expressed the model well. We strike, we foment uprising against the regime in question, we make it starkly obvious to Muslim leaders that they personally will die, and we reduce our profile as targets.

We must address the argument that we cannot conduct suppression of terrorism from the air with drones. We need human intelligence, national technical means, bribery, negotiation, deception, and ruthless determination to kill. When necessary we might need special forces temporarily on the ground. But we do not need nation building. We might need to cause mountains of collateral damage but we do not need to offer ourselves up as targets.

That is not to say that Iran can be permitted to acquire the bomb, it must be stopped at all costs. That does not imply that we have to occupy Iran.

Seems to me that occupations seem to be our fail point in the mideast. Obviously its necessary sometimes but it should not be about winning the hearts and minds.
