Analysis: Obama's Afghanistan problem gets worse (Just like Iraq, Obama now losing Afghanistan)
google ^ | 3/11/2012 | ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press

Posted on 03/11/2012 5:34:53 PM PDT by tobyhill

President Barack Obama has a PR problem when it comes to Afghanistan, to say the least.

Once the must-fight war for America, the decade-long mission has spiraled into a series of U.S. missteps and violent outbreaks that have left few ardent political supporters. After NATO detained a U.S. soldier Sunday for allegedly killing sleeping Afghan villagers, Republicans and Democrats alike pointed to the stress on troops after years of fighting and reiterated calls to leave by the end of 2014 as promised, if not sooner.

"It's just not a good situation," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. "Our troops are under such tremendous pressure in Afghanistan. It's a war like no other war we've been involved in. ... We're moving out, as the president said. I think it's the right thing to do."

Likewise, many Republicans —who as a party fought against a quick exodus in Iraq and criticized Obama's 2008 presidential campaign promise to end the war — are now reluctant to embrace a continued commitment in Afghanistan.

"There's something profoundly wrong with the way we're approaching the whole region, and I think it's going to get substantially worse, not better," said GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich. "I think that we're risking the lives of young men and women in a mission that may, frankly, not be doable."

When it really goes south he’ll blame Bush for getting the US in there in the first place. He’s just cleaning up Bush’s mess he’ll say.

Yes, “the good war”.

I would like the MSM to ask Obama how pulling out of Iraq contained Iran?

Obama already took credit for the “troop surge” that “quelled the violence” so he owns it.

I commend this soldier. Apparently at some point in his "killing spree" he was able to call in an airstrike.

I hate Obama, but we’re in a no-win situation in Afghanistan. The government is corrupt beyond imagining, and we are seen by most of the natives as the only thing propping up the corrupt. They don’t want democracy, they don’t want women’s rights, and they want nothing of what we’re trying to cram down their throats.

If anyone can tell me how you define “winning” in Afghanistan, I’d be glad to hear it. Because each day the dirt-eaters there grow more tired of our presence and more sympathetic to the Taliban (who are mostly Afghans, btw).

Until someone figures out what “winning” means and we can all agree on the path to it, the mission is doomed, and American men and women will be dying for no reason in particular.

And yes, I remember September 11th. However, that was a terrorist organization that is currently active and supported by many of our middle eastern “allies”. Not a whole lot of al Qaeda left in Afghanistan.

Wow, that asking a lot...for a journ’o’list today to actually ask a cogent relative question of their boy wonder....

One has to wonder even if they think in those terms....their template would get all out of whack...

Terminate all the mullahs (starting with Omar), raze all the mosques, burn all the korans, paint pictures of Mad Mo’ with the exploding turban at Bamyan and exit the country.

“When it really goes south he’ll blame Bush...”

Well, Bush DID go in there trying to peddle western ideals to a culture and religion that are fundamentally opposed to those ideals, right? We were going to democratize Afghanistan so they’d never allow al Qaeda to shelter there.

Well, Islam is incompatible with democracy, and was on when Bush sent in the first troops.

But hey, I trusted Bush too and thought that he and his people knew what they were doing. They didn’t. That’s undeniable. The Afghans, and all muslims, want none of what we have to offer ideologically. Trying to force that down their throats does not make us any more endearing.

Face it, we effed up. We thought Islam was a harmless religion like all the others. Bush and his “experts” should have known better, and for that, I blame myself for trusting any politician, conservative or progressive.

That caught my eye as well.....I think we are getting played here....

The killing spree story is either a cover for something else that went horribly wrong or a set up for some political play yet to be fully realized

I would put NOTHING past this administration.....

It was Obama himself that recently took credit for the “drop in violence” because of his surge so I'm waiting for the MSM to call Obama out on his “Mission Accomplish” moment.

Once the must-fight war for America,...

It was only the "must-fight war" because it wasn't where George Bush was concentrating.

Once they didn't have George Bush in the White House, it became "We Gotta Get Outta This Place".

The Ultra-left is pissed at Obozo because he got involved in Libya, we are still in Afghanistan and he did NOT close Gitmo as promised. I think we should come up with a way to help Denny Kucinich mount a Third Party run for President, for the good folks on the far-left.

“Likewise, many Republicans —who as a party fought against a quick exodus in Iraq and criticized Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign promise to end the war — are now reluctant to embrace a continued commitment in Afghanistan.”

We should remain in Afghanistan, but fundamentally change our tactics. We should give up trying to sustain Karza. It was a serious mistake to allow any government to be set up that embraced Islam as a state religion. It is Islam, as practiced by the Taliban, that is the fundamental inciting cause of continued trouble in that region.

The Taliban should NEVER be acknowledged as a legitimate entitity and MUST be totally radicated. You embrace the Taliban in any way....you die...that simple. There will be NO Sharia law in Afghanistan and the government WE set up will ensure this. War is hell and cruelty and cannot be reformed. We must make the appeal to it or insurgency so clostly to the average Afghani that they will readily turn in Taliban members of their own families to avoid horrible consequences. The people must be given the absolute, government backed, right to total freedom of religion. Meaning they can be “peaceful” Muslims, Christians, athiests....and none will dare violate that peace.

Then after the country has been totatlly pacified then we can start pulling out. IF these are not our goals, then we may as well leave now....we are wasting lives and accomplishing nothing of lasting value under current ROAs.

The fact that we’re more than 10 years into this military campaign and we’re still talking about what constitutes “winning” is pathetic ... and in my mind is irrefutable evidence that the U.S. government had no business sending any troops there at all.

That and other searing images, including an AP photographer's confirmation of burned bodies at the scene, easily eclipsed Friday's upbeat announcement that the U.S. and Afghanistan had agreed on the transfer of Afghan detainees to Afghan control.

I wonder if the "upbeat" announcement that we were going to transfer "detainees" to Afghan control might have upset someone who had risked his life and probably lost some of his brothers capturing these "detainees".

Obama is the one who stepped up our involvement in Afghanistan. President Bush’s strategy was to draw them into Iraq and fight them there. We were making progress before obama took over. Laura bush had a strong initiative to help the women there. Once the POS started announcing withdrawal dates things started going south fast in both countries. He wasn’t even focused on our military or winning. All he cared about was DADT. I wish nothing but the worst on that evil piece of garbage.

If anyone can tell me how you define “winning” in Afghanistan, I’d be glad to hear it.

Winning the "hearts and minds" doesn't mean we shove western ideals down their throats. It won't work. In 2003-2004, we were giving local people jobs. The company I was working for was paying $1.00 per day. Afghani's were flocking to these jobs because they didn't have anything else. The biggest thing was- it was safe. We were sending convoys from Bagram to Kabul twice a week, and never had a problem until some Norwegians (IIRC) decided to break down doors in a nearby village and were engaged.

Then big military also moved in. Everyone had a plan, an idea, and a pocket too full of cash. The war in A-stan was no longer SOF-centric, but micromanaged by the same bureaucratic staff weenies who force the troops to wear reflective belts on a blacked out camp. The same weenies who rarely leave the confines of their bases to interact with the locals. The same weenies who require a 60+ page PPT presentation for an operation vs a 5 paragraph operations order. The bureaucracy is out of control.

IMO- the biggest problem we face in A-stan at this point is ourselves.

Afghanistan is a d@#n tar baby and we have been stuck to it for 10 years, half as long as the Russians tried to conquer it.

This is a mountainous country with few and horrible roads outside a couple of big cities. The people are tribal with thousands of years of formng short alliances with another tribe for short term, and next year forming an alliance against the tribe they were formerly allied with, extending loyalty only to their own tribe.

They intend to keep women and children under strict curfew, and practice the "religion of peace" because it caters to all their bestiality and forms a permission for cruelty. It and they (Taliban) are pure evil. Our military are hampered by PC rules of engagement that are detrimental to their (our military) safety. I would love to ship most of Hollywood, Obama and all his czars to Afghanistan--out in the Hinterland.

Oh, let's keep Mooshelle home as she would probably scare the h&!! out of everyone. Hmmm! Actually, she might be a not too secret weapon. She could teach them the joys of unlimited travel, which might distract, and sidetrack some of their animosity into forming a food police force.

You know it's time to water the tree of liberty when you wake up every day and think, "Well, what's going to be the manufactued crisis for today?" . . November 6, 2012. .
