Iron Dome ups its interception rate to over 90%
the Jerusalem Post ^ | 3/10/2012 | Yaakov Katz and Yaakov Lappin

Posted on 03/11/2012 6:40:29 PM PDT by U-238

The Israel Air Force’s Iron Dome rocket-defense system intercepted 27 rockets fired from the Gaza Strip over the weekend, raising the interception rate from 75 percent last year to over 90%.

Israel currently has three Iron Dome batteries in operation – in Ashkelon, Ashdod and Beersheba – and plans to deploy the fourth in the coming months. Its plan is to deploy a total of nine batteries by mid-2013.

The battery in Ashdod intercepted 11 rockets out of 13 fired into the city; the battery in Ashkelon intercepted one rocket and purposely did not intercept four others since they were heading to open fields; and the battery in Beersheba intercepted 15 and allowed two others to strike open fields The Iron Dome is designed to defend against rockets at a range of 4-70 kilometers. Each battery consists of a multi-mission radar manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries and three launchers, each equipped with 20 interceptors called Tamirs.

The radar enables Iron Dome operators to predict the impact site of the enemy rocket and decide not to intercept it if it is slated to hit an open area. Each interceptor costs around $50,000 and usually two are fired at rockets slated for interception.

The results, IDF officers said, were an improvement since 2011, during which the Iron Dome intercepted a total of 33 rockets for a success rate of just 75%. Some of the misses were the results of technical malfunctions that have since been repaired.

Problem is, 0.01% can ruin your whole day. If one out of 100 gets through and lands on you head, thre’s no headache. There’s no head.

usually two are fired at rockets slated for interception.

Shouldn't they be firing three?

1 to intercept
1 to make sure you intercept
1 to see if the Palestinian population centers are protected by an Iron Dome system

Iron Dome has three central components:

1.Detection & Tracking Radar:
2.Battle Management & Weapon Control
3.Missile Firing Unit

Still the wrong way of handling this.

The proper procedure would be one round of 155 mm arty counterbattery fire for every rocket launched.

Don’t tell me it can’t be done, either. With the systems available today, you can pinpoint a launch site seconds after the first rocket lifts. A good team of cannon-cockers can have steel rain down on that position fast enough to get the launchers, and of course, the launchees.

And I don’t give a rat’s hind end if it’s a mosque, a hospital or even an orphanage. Once it became clear that EVERY rocket would get the same treatment, the Pallies would stop the launch turds from setting them up.

Works for me.....and would probably work in real life.
And that is why we probably won’t see it happen.

add component 4 -
counterbattery unit.
Tracking radars can tell you where the battery is, and where to lay counterbattery fire.
Yes, the lefties will whine about “civilian casualties”.
Guess what, bunkie, locating offensive weaponry next to civilians (a.k.a. “human shields”) is considered a war crime, except the lefties turn a blind eye. So if the lefties care so much, why don’t they volunteer to “defend” the Kassam batteries? What say you, Sean Penn, Bill Ayers, Medea Benjamin?

I like the thought (being an old artilleryman); but the problem is they fire the suckers and beat feet - they’re not there when the HE arrives. Israel should turn Gaza into a parking lot on the beach.

" Your theory needs to be tested then. "
already has been; In Iraq ('06, iirc), an u-tube video showed a terrorist
mortar team "got-blowed-up real good" after only 2/3 salvos.....
i suggest 4 "returns",
2 @ the missile..
1 @ the launch site..
1 @ any nearby mosque..
and them show what terror really means.

Now this is getting too complicated. Can we just start over?

Component 1: Preemptive strike.

Well, the other end of the problem is economic. I understand it’s a 50K super-intelligent missile to shoot down a $300 unguided rocket. Of course, considering that this type of basically homegrown rocket don’t really cause any widespread damage (of course, not any comfort if you happen to be under one), it’s good target practice for now.

Actually these are standard Russian munitions that are fired from BM-21 (GRAD), 122mm Multiple Rocket Launcher that have been altered to be fired singly.

Hopefully they will eventually be able to shoot them down so soon after launch that they land in Lebanon where they came from.

Yes and the $300 dollar rocket probably flies quite erratically. If they can still hit 90% that’s probably quite good.

I’m not either, but I remember reading an article on counter-battery fire against mortars not too long ago, and it’s amazing what they can do these days. But it stands to reason in this case it wouldn’t be hard.

If Iron Dome can plot an impact point for a rocket, they can obviously plot an launch point.

Shooting the rocket out of the air is nice, but it’s even nicer to shoot the rocket shooter so he can’t launch more.

The South Koreans have a special radar called "Firefinder" that detects these artilery launch points.

I think its possible with nuclear weapons. They key though is to get them before the leave the atmosphere in their “boost phase”. Once they are in their midcourse phase, they begin dispense chaff and decoys and the missile begins to MIRV.At this point pin-point tracking is very important. Both by satellite and by ground stations. We have the best tracking technology such as the Aegis system(SM-3).The Standard missile system was also enhanced and tested for ballistic missile interception. The key now is to distinguish the RV from the chaff and decoys. Also now you have to contend with MARVs. They are warheads that are capable to move around defenses.

I agree that a lot of the rats would shoot and scoot, but if the Israelis were firm about responding to every launch, the shooters would soon find few places to shoot from.

Loyalty to the cause be damned, I don’t think the people living in that neighborhood are going to be thrilled with the Jihadis setting up a rocket launcher on their roof if they know — not think but KNOW — their homes would be turned to rubble two minutes (or less) after that rocket lifts.
