White-dominated California boards face legal threats over racial makeup
Sacramento Bee ^ | 3/11/2012

Compton City Councilwoman Janna Zurita owes her Hispanic last name to a grandmother from Spain, whom she never met. Zurita considers her mother black and said her father "wants to be black" even though he "looks Latino."

Zurita, the mayor pro tem of Compton, sometimes jokes with her sister about their racial roots.

"She always tells me I look just like a Mexican: flat booty, straight hair. You know, just all kind of – how Mexicans used to look. You know, now they have big booties," Zurita said in a legal deposition in November. "You know, little jokes about it."

While Zurita takes a sometimes-playful approach to her racial identity, it became the serious subject of a recent lawsuit under the California Voting Rights Act. In January, a judge ruled that a trial would be necessary to figure out whether Zurita could be considered Latina and whether that means Latinos have a voice on the council. The city settled the suit late last month.

The legal gymnastics in Compton illustrate California's far-reaching law, which bars local governments from diluting the voting strength of minorities. The law has become the foundation of a burgeoning onslaught of legal threats that could upend the racial makeup of elected bodies throughout the state.

Armed with 2010 census data, a network of attorneys is increasingly targeting local governments, from cities and school boards to hospital and community college districts, for not reflecting the demographics of their constituents.

"We're seeing the fastest change in how California organizes local government since the Progressives of the early 20th century," said Douglas Johnson of the Rose Institute of State and Local Government at Claremont Mc-Kenna College, who has been critical of the law.

So why don’t they just get rid of elections altogether? Doesn’t seem to matter what the voting public wants anyway.

Let's get Obama before this judge. Maybe we'd finally get some answers about his origins.

Let's just require that all white people sew one of these on their outerwear when they go out in public:

Or, we could require that people of color pay taxes in proportion to their demographics in the population.

Which would be more fair?

Ha ha

This is why White lIberals are the dumbest people on the planet. Even if they win they still lose. They push the multicultural BS, but Blacks and Hispanics will always vote for one of their own and they lose power.

The article creates a thesis and then DOESN'T ADDRESS IT!

Is a light-skinned Latino NOT a Latino? If you come from Spanish ancestry (lighter than German or Norwegian) but named "Gonzales" are you able to claim special treatment under the Voting Rights Act (much less EEO hands on the scale)?

Are "Latinos" or "Hispanics" based on skin color? National origin? My wife is from Mexico and I assure you is Mestizo. But she has light skin and her father has not only light skin but grey/blue eyes. So being from Mexico makes her Latina? Not according to the race-baiters.

Bottom line: There is no definition of "Latino/a" or "Hispanic" or "Mestizo/a" -- it is a construct of those who would use their last name (real or assigned as in "Villaregosa") to further their political agenda.

My fellow FReepers, I urge you to challenge each and every person who uses the term "Latino/a" or "Hispanic" to define it!

Start running for every elected position in every election or we can kiss our nation goodbye. I’m seeing it happen on my street and it is increasingly criminal. GET INVOLVED or else.

This is pure and simple racism. These race-baiting idiots believe that a citizen can only be fairly represented by someone in government who shares the same skin color. No consideration is given to the values or issues, no, it is purely race driven...yet the conservatives are seen as the racists. It disgusts me.

Wait a minute, isn't this the state that enables a boy that ‘feels’ like a girl to be a girl? Seems that folks ought to be able ‘ feel ‘ that they are any race- less surgery too

They already did that in Kalifornia long ago. Remember the overwhelmingly-passed Prop 187 and Prop 8? The votes didn't go the way the scumbag liberals wanted, so they just... threw them out. If you are in California, get out now. Run, don't walk. You don't want to be the Last White Farmer in Zimbabwe.

Every NBA team must then have black members limited to 15.4%.

Colored people should indeed pay taxes in proportion to their demographics in the population.

Hey, cool. I'm sure they can find a few old codgers from down south who were members of the White Citizens Councils back in the 50's, and can provide expert testimony about how to classify our citizens according to their mixtures of racial blood. Isn't progress grand?

“They push the multicultural BS, but Blacks and Hispanics will always vote for one of their own and they lose power.”

Also, they’d be killed in the wrong neighborhood at night as quickly as a white conservative. I think they know that, which is why they “help” minorities with abortion-on-demand and free contraception.

They let “Latinos” determine who is Latino; it is so vague I think anyone can fit in there.

The racial politics will get worse as blacks are continuously displaced by Hispanics in schools, the workplace, political office, even prison. Companies may now hire Hispanics and meet sufficient racial quotas (which are illegal, but constantly used to sue companies) so as to avoid hiring blacks altogether if they so choose; there is no more use for the “token black”.

“And at some point there will also be no more use for the token white...”

They’ve already been shown the door; without union protection any whites not critical to the operation of a company have been shown the door (often after “mentoring” a minority replacement). Like the white farmers of Zimbabwe they should keep their knowledge to themselves; while they’ve been booted from their home country (resulting in it’s economic shut-down), neighboring Mozambique has gone out of its way to hire these people who fed a continent, and know how to do it again.

“Occupy Wall Street” is a large collection of unemployed white professionals.

At one time, states were required to raise revenues during national emergencies to help fund the federal government in proportion to their numbers.

Even though this system largely disappeared by the Civil War, certain states and municipalities actually held fundraising drives as recently as World War II to support things such as a naval vessel to be named after their city.

Since the libtards are so intent on Balkanizing America along artificially defined racial lines, I'm just proposing that we reinstitute that funding mechanism-- if you want to be first in the line at the government trough for special benefits then you have to be first in line to provide the proportionate funding.
