Santorum not so strong with Pennsylvania folks Spending raises conservative doubts
The Washington Times ^ | March 11th, 2012 | Ralph Z. Hallow

HOUSTON — After a big win in Saturday’s Kansas caucuses, Rick Santorum is riding high almost everywhere but in his native Pennsylvania.

While Christian-right leaders such as James Dobson, Tony Perkins, Tom LeFever, Rebecca Hagelin and Richard Viguerie were holding a fundraiser in Texas for the former senator Friday, some in his hometown of Pittsburgh were expressing doubts about the candidate’s reliability as an advocate of small government and fiscal integrity.

“I guess you could say there’s a disconnect between Rick Santorum’s claim to be a small-government fiscal conservative and the Pittsburgh tunnel project he pushed for as a U.S. senator,” said Jack Brooks, a former top official in a powerful Pennsylvania trade union that backed Mr. Santorum’s failed Senate re-election bid in 2006.

Mr. Santorum, running a shoestring campaign to wrest the Republican nomination from front-runner Mitt Romney, has claimed to be “the true conservative” in the GOP race. Not surprisingly, his rivals on the national scene say he is anything but. A campaign ad by his rival, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, tags Mr. Santorum as a “fake fiscal conservative.”

Newt Gingrich, appearing on Fox News on Sunday, again questioned Mr. Santorum’s conservative bona fides.

How many folks voting for Rick Santorum don't care that he is not a fiscal conservative?

LOL, understatement of the Primaries.

I see potential, though: “Vote for Rick. He’s not connected!”

How many people voting for Rick could care less what distortion a bunch of bitter Gingrich supporters have to offer. Santorum IS a conservative and that every bit as much as Newt Gingrich.

The remarkable thing is how far Santorum has come with so little support from uniting the conservatives. Yeah, baby, that sums it up. Love those pesky dems elevating Ricky.

LOL!! We don’t WRITE the news. We READ and POST. Look for some obscure poll in PA for your Rick-is-a-fine-conservative propaganda.

PA knows this guy like the back of their hand.

That’s possibly why he is out of office there.

Better get used to Rick unless you like Romney. There is no path to defeating Romney without Rick being on the ticket. Newt cannot win the nomination without teaming up with Rick in some fashion. Bashing Rick is a complete waste of time at this point. The Washington Times appears to be yet another arm of the RNC RINO Romney media since I have seen lots of Newt and Rick hit pieces linked from there in recent weeks.

According to the most recent polling in Pennsylvania, the Washington Times article is way off base. Santorum is doing pretty well in PA.

Key Findings

The February 2012 Franklin and Marshall College Poll finds former US Senator Rick Santorum gaining momentum in his home state as he has nationally.

Senator Santorum is currently well ahead of his Republican primary rivals in Pennsylvania, and he has trimmed President Barack Obama’s lead in the state compared to one month ago.

The Republican Presidential Primary

Rick Santorum’s victories in three primaries a few weeks ago helped propel his candidacy nationally, and this momentum has spilled over to Pennsylvania. His
favorable rating among Pennsylvania Republicans has risen from 46% in January to 63% now.

Rick Santorum is the official 2012 spoiler. That will

be his legacy. Ricky is a big government spender. For anyone to suggest for a conservative to give up their convictions, to support this politician, has not much merit to me. Santos does not deserve the presidency. Romney does not either. People are allowing for the best candidate to fall back by dividing the votes; who is the very person who lead reforms. That person is not the No Child Left Behind offender, Title 10/Title 20/Vote offender for Arlen/vote for Mitt, caters to pro union groups offender>> Santorum.

You guys are quoting polls from the THIRD WEEK OF FEBRUARY. In politics that’s enough time passed for the dinosaurs to have both evolved (or been created if you prefer) and gone extinct.

“PA knows this guy like the back of their hand.”

True. He’s leading his nearest rival by 29 points and more, according to the recent polls. And others know him too “like the back of their hand.” He’s won in MN, MO, CO, IA, AK, TN and lost in razor thin margins to Romney in WA, MI, and OH (1% loss), and according to Gallup now leads Obama, albeit by even a point, and yes, Rasmussen says he has the highest favorability ratings even in AL and MS.

Absolute BS. Santorum is not an ideological liberal but he is not as conservative as Newt. You believe that then you have been bamboozled.

Santorum is a big government “compassionate conservative” with strong social conservative views. He is not now nor ever has been a small government & fiscal conservative.

He does not believe the simple credo that the government should get of of folks wallets and off their backs and never has.

Santorum is polling around 55% among republicans in his home state. That’s abysmal folks. Santorum could not get elected to any statewide office in PA and has zero chance of carrying it in a general election.

To get 55% of republican voters. Means you got about 15-18% general electorate support in PA. That is Not an infidication of Santorums strength its a complete indictment of his utter weakness.

He certainly SHOULD have won, with a field cleared of Newt with Romney money, leaving only Uncle Ron as the other ABR contestant.

All the cash in the scores of millions spent eviscerating Newt was a direct injection into the Santorum not-Romney campaign.

I would be fine with that. But Santorum has endorsed and campaigned for Romney in 2008 and Santorum is an establishment politician. It is far more likely that Santorum will sell out to Romney for a VP slot.

Mr. Behrend said that before Mr. Santorum first ran for Congress in 1990, he “tried out a speech with all of us in Young Republicans” and “didn’t mention the pro-life issue.” “Afterward, I asked him where he stood, and he said, ‘I haven’t made up my mind.
