President Barack Obama's approval rating has plunged below 50 percent, and Republican front-runner Mitt Romney would beat him if the election took place today, a poll showed Monday.
The survey, by ABC News and The Washington Post, indicated that only 46 percent of Americans now approve of the way Obama is handling his job, and 50 percent disapprove as he took a hit from rising gas prices.
The situation was a reversal from early February, when 50 percent approved of the president's performance and 46 percent disapproved.
The survey was released as the battleground for the Republican presidential nomination moved to the deep South for primaries in Alabama and Mississippi on Tuesday.
If the presidential election took place today, the poll found that Romney would beat Obama 49 percent to 47 percent.
The president was barely ahead of former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who is running second in the Republican pack — 49 percent to 46 percent.
Previously, Obama held significant advantages over both.
According to the survey, the drop was attributed to soaring gas prices threatening to crimp America's slow recovery from a recession.

You’re right; the Dems will try to use his wealth against him to show an out-of-touch destroyer of jobs running against a champion of the masses. I just don’t know that many will buy Obama this time around; it has been a horrible 3 years, and he offers no hope anymore. If Romney attacks on some simple points (Obama’s war on employers, gasoline engines, etc. - using Obama’s own quotes against him) he should have no problem. There are simply not enough government workers (still working), homosexuals, and unassimilated minorities to put Obama over the top, and nobody else has any incentive to support The Sultan.

“slow recovery”? The unemployment rate’s still almost twice what it was under Bush. No matter how many jobs are created, the problem is the mass of people who were unemployed on Obama’s watch, the fear, doubt and uncertainty Obama himself inflicted on business with his messing around with health care - Obama may lose just on the magic shrinking health coverage Americans get now that he’s guaranteed health coverage will be more expensive for most of us - and the backfire of his lack of resolve with Iran - which predictably will lead us into yet another war under a weak Democrat (just like the escalation of the Vietnam conflict into something that cost 50,000 American lives).
It’s just mind numbing to think of the level of infiltration the left has managed into GOP leadership. We are betrayed from within...

Obama has never worked in the private sector. The only private deal he made in his entire life was buying a house with help of Tony Rezko.
Romney actually made millions in the private sector. Sorry, I do not like politicians who have no experience in the private sector, and have fed at the public trough all their life.

Not correct. From what I have read, Romney donated his entire inheritance to charity. From what I gather, his entire $250 million net worth is self earned. Bain capital is a titan in venture capital industry.
