With Sunday's news that a US soldier massacred 16 Afghan civilians, mostly women and children, in their sleep and then burned the bodies, the little that the US can claim to have achieved in Afghanistan, at great cost over a decade, is now likely to be lost.
No American, and probably no westerner, will be safe in Afghanistan for a decade after the soldier's murderous rampage. Really, if they're willing to murder people over burned books, imagine the intensity of Afghan hatred for a truly heinous crime against sleeping civilians, with one man losing all 11 members of his family.
Although speculation is pointless, the first thing that comes to mind, especially with reports that this soldier is a sergeant (rather than a lower-ranked soldier) is revenge against Afghanistan for the murder of multiple US soldiers by Afghans following the recent burning of a few Korans by American soldiers.
Although I understand a soldier's desire for vengeance against a nation which demands apologies for singed books but offers none for murder, this soldier's actions are obviously beyond sanction and deserving of the death penalty -- even if he claims insanity.
As is his wont, President Obama has already apologized to the president of Afghanistan, who has said that the murders "cannot be forgiven." While I understand Karzai's feelings, and would likely share them, it is a distinctly unhelpful line of rhetoric from the nation's leader if he actually cared about maintaining any even superficially friendly relationship with the United States.
The fact that he said what he said means he is more concerned with domestic politics than with his "alliance" with the United States. That focus is all the easier when dealing with a US president who projects weakness and fecklessness at every opportunity, ...

What happened to “innocent until proven guilty”?
Sure, blame Obastard's feckless and cowardly bahavior and his failures in Afghanistan on ONE soldier.
Like all wars, this war won’t be won until there are large scale civilian casualties.
A sergeant out of how many hundreds in the place, who is believed to probably have gone mad. Compare that to how many militant Islamists go mad... oops, that is, believe the Koran with all their heart right down to the murderous details.
I never like to see a child killed but I remember when thousands of Americans were murdered on 9-11, many of them women and children, the scum of the world, otherwise known as Muslims, stood in the streets cheering.
Day after day exposure to the life those savages live and the rules of engagement developed by our failed leadership and how they keep good soldier’s from defending themselves and from winning the peace probably drove this poor man to the edge of reality.
A REAL president like Reagan would never tolerate this third work bastard Karzai and would put him in his place in under a second.
Shut off all aid and bring our soldiers home. Let Afghanistan burn.
Tell me why the doctors sent this guy back knowing he had brain injury? he served FOUR TOURS! IMO it is the doctors that should be court martialed. This man was sick and they damn well knew it
Pick the defective seed...eat the good seed...THAT IS AFGHANISTAN....
4 tours is enough for this crap.
Bring our troops home - these thugs are not worth it.
Post of the Day in my opinion.
Some American servicemen burn a few Korans and the whole country flips out.
An American serviceman snaps and kills and burns sixteen civilians and so far nothing.
If that isn’t an argument for leaving that country to its miserable fate I don’t know what is.
I am somewhat certain that there will be less “outrage” among the MoHAMhead savages over this than there was over the burning of the Koran.
The only thing those savages fear is genocidal reprisals like that one.
As awful as it was, it is probably the only thing that will quiet them down.
Any riots today?
Any targeted assassinations of Americans?
It may be that the MoHAMhead savages are worried that if they do that, it may set off more than just one lone American on a murderous rampage.
“the little that the US can claim to have achieved in Afghanistan, at great cost over a decade, is now likely to be lost.”
We have ‘achieved’ nothing in afghanistan. NOTHING! Under bush we created yet another totalitarian islamist state. We have lost more American lives since obama took office than throughout the entire rest of that war. obama turned our troops into cannon fodder. There is American blood on his hands and he revels in it.
I don’t like to see innocent people ‘murdered’ either, but who in afghanistan is ‘innocent’?
I have studied several news reports from interviews with village Taliban(they are all Taliban) and they say it was a “group” in Soldiers. The staff Sargent has taken the rap but this is much bigger and cent comm knows it. It is my view that these soldiers were pissed because 6 Americans were killed by implants for burning books used to write notes between prisoners and that stupid President of ours fanned the flames by apologizing!! What should have happened was the summary execution of those using the books in reprisal.
Any way I’m pretty sure that this attack was a military reprisal for the needless killing of 6 great American soldiers by the implants reprisal for burning the communications between their fellow prisoner ( that stupid Obama just gave the prison back to the control of that corrupt Karzi!)
Now the interesting thing is that if it was several soldiers, that blows the propaganda that this great Staff sergeant with 3 tours of duty in Iraq was not off his rocker at all. He was sick to his gut with Obama’s looser mentality and goes out with honor. We will see but I think the eye witness reports are screwing things up. This is a war and you cannot refine it.
I don’t believe anything the media or the government is saying about this.
Lyndee Englund, Karpinski, et al, totally set the Iraqis against us, as we mocked them; prolonging the Iraq war by about four years!
Now we have a recent Quoran pyre, and now 16 civilians deaths in Afganistan, so that these locals can cut off our western heads with impunity..
Zer0 and his band will bow to the muzzies, yet I believe it’s time for the Son of Shock and Awe to wipe the Afgan insurgents off the face of the map!
Lot’s of collateral!
“You’re either with us or you’re against us!
My view, which I've maintained for several years, is that we should leave Afghanistan to the Afghans, but tell their central government and each of the nation's powerful warlords that should any harm befall American interests anywhere in the world due to people whom we can trace back, in an operational sense, to areas under their control, we will turn those areas into glass, making sure to target the areas' rulers
F ing Morons never cared that EVERY foreign invaders has graveyards in Afghanistan.
Bomb it with pig blood covered bombs!
amabO is a piece of PIG FECES!
Afgans laugh at the man child!
We aren't there so Americans and Westerners can be safe there. We are there because they harbored the animals who masterminded an attack on our country. They paid a price for welcoming the Taliban. What that damaged soldier did is appalling. But as long as those people are under the sway of their obscene religion, things aren't going to get any better regardless of what we do or fail to do. Bar any more of them from coming here. Bring our soldiers home, bring home all of our equipment and treasure, cut off their welfare and let the strongest predator take them over. That predator can assume the fight, the financing, and face the same thing we're facing right now. None of them are fit to live in civilized societies. They should be isolated from civilization, forbidden to travel to western countries and allowed to fight it our amongst themselves.
I got a $100.00 bill says the Sarge get court martialed and punished before the Mooslem Major Jihad Hassan.
I WOULDN’T BE SURPRISED TO SEE THE MAN CHILD TURN HIM OVER TO THE AFGHANS!
Everything Obastard does is with an eye how it will get him re-elected. He doesn’t care how many soldiers are killed to prop up the incredibly corrupt Karzai government. After we leave, it won’t stand a year.
Just how are they supposed to calculate what he might do? Premonition, Voodoo? They would have us all locked up because of uncertainty to meet your standards.
One of the many virtues of hypocrisy is the convenience of another man’s tragedy.
IIRC, he turned himself in. He’ll get his trial.
You make a good point about the lop-sided ROE, I’d thought of that too, upon reading the initial reports yesterday.
Maybe this is a dumb question, and maybe I have missed the revelation, but why are we not being told who this guy is? What his name is?
What’s the deal with that?!
I have asked the same. Either we are protecting his family, or he is a Muslim.
It seems if he were Muslim, it would be good to get that out their because it might calm the natives a little to know the murders were at the hands of one of their fellow barbarians.
Anyway, it is odd that we know he is a Sgt., where he served, and his time in Iraq, but we haven’t heard his name.
He’s not a Muslim. His name is withheld until formal charging to protect his rights and his family.
This is a terrible, terrible event.
And you would know this, because?
This guy walked out of the gate and undertook massacre against women and children. In their beds sleeping. Not on a battlefield, but in a village. All on his own. I don't know a single current military, or ex military that thinks this is anything besides premeditated murder.
Of COURSE he needs medical evaluation and potentially treatment. Of COURSE this should remain under the control of the US Army...in all stages.
But if found sane, he must be hung or placed in front of a firing squad.
And, we need to withdraw from Afghanistan within 60 days from today.
Apologies should be given privately....we don't need the POTUS doing it in front of the rest of the world.
Thanks FSE, that makes sense. I don’t know if you have more information.
It is a very terrible event.
He’s a staff sergeant from the Stryker Brigade at Ft. Lewis. Name isn’t being released. His unit served three deployments to Iraq, but we don’t know if he was there for all three. The man should not have been in Afghanistan. He had served his country well and just went over the edge.
Because not all news travels through the media. For obvious reasons I'll divulge no details until the official announcements come out.
At face value, if what you’re saying is true...I will agree, that Obama should be torn to shreds for this.....you know damn well if Bush was President, it would be Abu Ghraib times 1000.
From my observation, the rioting is typically after Friday afternoon mosque services, when the news is spread by imams along with the exhortations of what to do. Many Afghans may not know while others are waiting for approval of collective violence.
Dude. Get a grip.
There is no way you'll find a "group" in the US Army that will go into town and kill women and children in their beds.
This is one guy, likely insane.
If that happens there will be war. Real war. Here.
If this was a Canadian soldier serving in Iceland doing the same thing, would the Muslims be just as outraged? I think not. Human life to these medieval people is local, very local.....
No American and probably no westerner has EVER been safe in Afghanistan.
Nobody in any civilian capacity should point a finger at the alleged perpetrator and render any judgement against him. If I were in the same position I might have acted the same way.
I've been doing some research on the stories surrounding the special recon/commando unit known as Task Force Oregon ("Tiger Force") in the central highlands of Vietnam back in 1967. What I find striking about the whole thing is that there always seemed to be an implicit understanding -- on the part of both the soldiers in the unit as well as their superiors (who covered most of the incidents up for years afterwards) -- that they were going to operate as "loose cannons" while they were out engaging an enemy that had the support of many civilians in the countryside.
That’s the VERY first thing I thought, too—he might be a Muslim! Then, when we did not hear his name, I really started to wonder if I were not right. We may or may not see...
I think this administration, along with the U.S. military, is going to go to great lengths to make this story go away quickly.
For one thing, it's a political embarrassment. Secondly, I predict that there are a number of details to this story that will paint the U.S. military brass in a very poor light -- such as the guy's prior medical history or some other factor that would have led any objective person to question why he was ever sent to Afghanistan in the first place.
this is from spectator? What happened to spectator?
Because we all know how ‘safe’ our troops have been all along.
Or how about 3 million killed in NY..?
But it’s all that one guys fault.
No not the alleged shooter.
This sounds way too fishy. I’m going to wait and see what “facts” come out.
So far it’s like the crap we heard about Ft. Hood - no true specifics. And then we find out...
I totally agree with you. No American soldier should be in Afghanistan in a month (or less).
We accomplished something at the very beginning but the last ten years are a waste of lives and money.
