(CBS News) President Obama's approval rating has hit the lowest level ever in CBS News polling, according to the latest CBS News/New York Times survey. The drop may be partially attributable to rising gas prices.

Just 41 percent of Americans approve of the job Mr. Obama is doing as president, according to the poll, conducted from March 7 to 11. Another 47 percent disapprove of his performance, up from 41 percent last month.

Mr. Obama's approval rating was 50 percent last month.

The average U.S. price of a gallon of gasoline has jumped 12 cents over the past two weeks. The poll found that most Americans, 54 percent, believe gas prices are something a president can do a lot about.

Mr. Obama's job rating on the economy remains about the same as it was last month - 39 percent approve, while 54 percent disapprove.

The economy and jobs remains the most important problem facing the country today, according to 51 percent of Americans. Three in four Americans think the economy is at least somewhat bad, including 30 percent who say it is very bad.

More Americans, 30 percent, say the economy is getting better; 24 percent say it is getting worse. The public's economic outlook was slightly better last month, when 34 percent said the economy was getting better.

Just 20 percent of Americans feel their family's financial situation is better today than it was four years ago. Another 37 percent say it is worse, and 43 percent say it is about the same.

Do you realize how much trouble the country is in if “Obama” still has 41% approval?

I agree with you in general, but I also think that to those who don't follow closely he can ‘sound’ reasonable in that he has that well-practiced ‘calm’ delivery.

In refusing to open the Keystone pipeline and in refusing to drill our own oil, Obama is essentially telling us that he's not going to do anything about gas prices. Americans would settle for a long-term plan to increase supply, but the one who boasted he could lower the oceans apparently is now claiming impotence.

Americans don't like being told what can't be done, so the attempt to give Obama cover by saying there's nothing a president can do has struck the wrong nerve. The people are beginning to feel duped. They have been duped.

This is a liberal fascist poll.... If they are reporting the Won’s approval rating at 41%, you can bet its actually 20 points lower, but among real, loyal, non treasonous Americans, his approval rating is “0”. The big Zero.

“Apparently, 41% of the people are so disconnected from reality...”

A large portion of that number are liberal single females. They want Big Government Sugar Daddy to feed them, pamper them and pay them to sit on their fat butts and watch Oprah. They are instigators and supporters of fascism and would rob you blind for a jumbo bag of potato chips.

Married females are much smarter.

“prospect of return of stagflation” What alternate universe have you been living in sir? Stagflation is here and has been here for YEARS. I know people who have not had a raise in 8 years and the price of everything is zooming up, except chicom junk and that has gone up as well.

The dollar is worthless and becoming more so by the day. Bankers are keeping interest rates low as possible to avoid having to face bad loans. The constructive destruction that is necessary is being avoided at all cost. The stock market is a joke, propped up by printed money only. Hardly anyone is making any money on market investments and certainly not enough to equal inflation.

Stagflation is here in spades. What do you mean “prospect of stagflation”? Just because the lame stream and government have not proclaimed it... they never will with oblabla in the whitey house.

Even some conservatives are arguing that the high gas prices aren't Obama's fault and point out that presidents have no control of gas prices, chiding liberals for blaming Bush for the spikes in '04 and '08.

I don't care about playing gotcha when this president is openly hostile to using oil and its crucial importance to America's prosperity and security.

The libs shout about how domestic production won't bring down the price at home since oil is sold on the world market. The more stable the world supply becomes the more stable the price will become in the United States.

Ask yourself why Bo’s approval rating is higher than congress?

Here is something I would like to see go “NATIONAL”
Purchase a book of “Post-it Note Pads” Place the note pads in your vehicle(s) along with a “Magic Marker.” When stopping at the pump for gas, take a “Post-it” note and write the following “How is that Hope and Change Working Out for You? After pumping your gas, place the “Post-it” Note on the pump, immediately below the “price-per-gallon.” Next driver to use the pump will get the message. If this goes Nationwide, think of the potential impact it may have on voters.

See America doesn’ mind if we have a radical marxist usurper in the office of ‘Present’dent. Never mind his crazed spending, 20 failed Green Companies, 8-9% unemployment, the Chevy Volt and unappointed Czars...However, if gas prices are to high..NOW there is gonna be trouble???
At least maybe they will vote him out or at the very least not vote at all..(?)
Please, Lord!

Short, sweet, and to the point.

It’s fairly simple, actually... Conservatives and Republicans disapprove of Congress largely because of the Senate. Liberals and Democrats disapprove largely because of the House of Representatives. There’s no individual face associated with Congress so one can more freely disapprove without feeling like you’re throwing your own side under the bus. With the presidency it’s different since it comprises of one individual and those who support the party and ideology in power are far more likely to rally behind their figurehead regardless of his actual record.

He was at 44% job approval in Rasmussen just two days ago and has been swinging between 44-49% over the past couple of weeks. I figure the correct number is somewhere in between, which is way higher than he deserves to be, but still a bad position to be in during an election year (under 50%).
