The Catcher

March 14, 2012

Life is a risky enterprise. Sometimes we fly high, enjoying great success. But then suddenly we fall into deep disappointments and the haunting reality of failure, leaving our hearts wondering if there is anything worth looking forward to.

At a funeral recently, the pastor told the story about a trapeze artist. The performer admitted that although he is seen as the star of the show, the real star is the catcher—the teammate who hangs from another trapeze bar to grab him and guarantee a safe landing. The key, he explained, is trust. With outstretched arms, the flyer must trust that the catcher is ready and able to grab him. Dying is like trusting in God as the catcher. After we have flown through life, we can look forward to God reaching out to catch His followers and to pull us safely to Himself forever. I like that thought.

This reminds me of Jesus’ comforting words to His disciples: “Let not your heart be troubled . . . . I go to prepare a place for you. And . . . I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:1-3).

Life is indeed a risky business, but be encouraged! If you have put your faith in Jesus Christ, the Catcher is waiting at the end to take you safely home.

Home from the earthly journey,
Safe for eternity;
All that the Savior promised—
That is what heaven will be. —Anon.
Our heavenly Father’s arms will one day catch His children.

Read: John 14:1-6

If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. —John 14:3

1 Samuel 1-3

You Are Guinness
You are hip, well educated, and a bit of a beer snob. It's likely that you live in (or at least drink in) the city.
You won't drink just anything, though you are somewhat adventurous about trying new beers. You consider yourself a beer aficionado.

You are concerned with how you look and how you seem. People admire you, and you enjoy being well thought of.
You are a social drinker and rarely drink alone. You feel more at home in a cozy pub than in your own home.

You Are Coors Light
You are a person who values routine and stability. It's likely that your order the same thing every time you go to the bar.
You aren't necessarily on a diet, but you do appreciate a beer that you can drink every day. If anything, you are consistent.

You don't like to change, but you're not adverse to taking risks... especially when you have a few beers in you.
The bottom line is that you're out to have a good time. You're all about friends, fun, and letting loose.

"If there is someone in this world who doesn't mind being called a "yuppie," it's you. You're proud of your material success.

You like premium brands and quality goods. You rather not drink if drinking means settling for a cheap beer.

You are the type of person who works hard and plays hard. You're a bit of a high roller, and you have to support your lifestyle.

You like to live well and enjoy the best things in life. You are up on the latest trends, and you always know where to see and be seen!

Amazing. Pretty close to nailing it.

Considers me a Heineken and though I prefer Becks will drink Heineken when Becks is not available.

The same goes fro my taste in Liquor (Canadian Club or Crown Royal) and a good Merlot or Cabernet when it comes to wine, though I won't pay exhorbitant prices when I can buy a moderately priced (and just as good) California wine.

In fact, I got a rash of sh*t from a friend (while down here vacationing in Clearwater Beach, Fl) as I wanted to stop at a Targets--as opposed to a more convenient 7-11--cuz most places don't sell Becks and will go out of my way to get/buy what I want and like.

Hi Canteen Crew.
I’ll drink just about any beer that is brewed under the German Purity Law of 1516.
Becks and St Pauli are my brews of choice lately.

You Are Guinness
You are sophisticated, erudite, and an insufferable beer snob. You eschew most bars and pubs, preferring to savor your brew alone or in the company of a few longstanding friends of like mind and discernment.

You are highly selective with respect to what you will allow past your lips, yet you still continue to expand your tasting repertoire to new brews, particularly from American microbrews.

Your friends respect and appreciate your voluminous hoard of lore pertaining to beers, ales, and stouts.

"Hermit hoar, in solemn cell,
Wearing out life’s evening gray;
Smite thy bosom, sage, and tell,
What is bliss, and which the way?
Thus I spoke; and speaking sigh’ed;
Scarce repressed a starting tear;
When the smiling sage reply’d
Come, my lad, and drink some beer."

Are there any fellow Nam Vets out there?

If so, you will (affectionally?) remember imbibing in (if like me, copious amounts of) Ba Moui Ba, or '33' Beer.

We were told it contained Formaldehyde and I believe it.

We always joked if we bought it, we would not even have to be embalmed.

Ah the good ol' days of trolling the many bars in Saigon (and buying Saigon Tea for the lovelies) when we were young, dumb and full of ... well you know the rest. lol

As I spent a year in Japan, I also had more than my share of Kirin which was much better.

Ah, but my absolute favorite (and one which is difficult to find here in the States) was San Miguel from the Phillipines and one of the best beers I ever drank.

You Are Corona
You are outgoing, energetic, and very extroverted. When people talk about the "life of the party," they're talking about you.
You always have a good time when you drink. Kicking back with a couple beers makes your usual cheerful self even happier.

You enjoy the company of others, and you thrive in any social situation. No group is too big or too small for you.
You may like beer more than most people, but that doesn't mean you aren't successful or productive. You are a huge go-getter.
