The land upon which Bristol Motor Speedway is built used to be a dairy farm.
Larry Carrier and Carl Moore traveled to Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1960 to watch a race and it was then that they decided to build a speedway in Northeast Tennessee. However, they wanted a smaller model of the Charlotte track, something with a more intimate setting and opted to erect a half-mile facility instead of mirroring the 1.5-mile track.
Work began on what was then called Bristol International Speedway in 1960 and it took approximately one year to finish. Officials scratched many ideas for the track on envelopes and brown paper bags.
The land on which BMS now sits, as well as construction of the track, cost approximately $600,000. The entire layout for BMS covered 100 acres and provided parking for more than 12,000 cars. The track itself was a perfect half-mile, measuring 60 feet wide on the straightaways, 75 feet wide in the turns and the turns were banked at 22 degrees.

Bristol race thread Ping!!!
wOOhOO! & YeeHaw!
How many Chevy Volts are entered?
Forecast says slight chance of a thunderstorm. The race should finish up Sunday even if it gets a bit wet.
We’ve supposed to be getting a big storm here in northern Arizona this weekend too. Looks like we won’t be watching much NASCAR judging from the weather forecast for Bristol.
Yeah baby..... bring it on. Gotta luv Bristol.
beat me by less than 1.5 minutes.
Now I feel bad...
May God Bless the Food City 500!
Forgive the jumbled photos. First time using iPhoto & am still learning. They looked fine in “preview”. :)
I think they look just fine. Got more? :)
Great clarity HD. The fun begins when you try to maintain that with cars going by at 195. :)
Didn’t get the chance this time. Was set to go to a high-speed setting but - poof - the battery died. My bad too as I forgot to charge it after our last vacation. I promise I’ll do better at Sonoma.
Great photos. I can see you did not learn from tubebender :)
Ahh, the Master has forgotten more than I ever know.......and maybe that’s a good thing.
Only had that happen to me once and that was at the birth of first granddaughter. Got carried away running video of the building, when her time came, there was no more battery.
Couldn’t help it, Portsmouth Naval Hospital is/was the oldest operating hospital in the US, maybe the world.
LOOK... the subtle dig with the AARP wagon was not lost on me DDX2!!! I bought and carry a extra battery pack for my Nikon and my pockets are full of AA Batteries when I use the Canon
Yip! You don’t have to be Filini to know that the “DD” in “DDX2” means “dead dog”.
The Canon takes a special battery that can only be charged by a Canon charger. I wish it was like my old Kodak Z612 that you can substitute AA batteries. I did get about 500 photos out of a charge - and it won’t happen again.... until the next time that it does.
As you taught me I now keep the old Kodak in the truck for those priceless moments like UFO’s, naked joggers and maybe someday a bear (I’m not being redundant) that after 27 years in Oreeegun I’ve yet to see in the woods.
My SiL & I were coming into Eureka when we spotted a accident up ahead and I had just enough time to hand him the camera and he muffed a once in a lifetime shot of geyser 60’ in the air from a broken fire hydrant. I’m talking to him again after...
A broken fire hydrant? You’re really rubbing it in to this old dog, aren’t you.
Drivers are picked & am going with the averages. I’d like to go to Bristol some day. 1 1/2 mile tracks are too big for me - I don’t want to watch the race with binoculars. The only incident I saw on the track at Vegas (there was a drunk guy in the lake at the Bellagio that couldn’t climb out and was picked up by police in a raft and taken to the pokie - but thats another story) was the 18 sliding down the track in front of us. Everything else I missed. Give me a mile or less....
thanks for the pix hdx2....especially for the one of the pretty lady in front of Smoke’s pit box.
RE: Chad Knauz’ suspension for some sort of “C” pillar non-conformance.
It would bolster Nascar’s credibility IF they would present the alleged incident with charts, pictures or any other evidence they have about the so called violation.
What exactly was out of tolerance? Knauz et al contend they did nothing wrong and the car passed other inspections last year.
Fans do not get to see anything at all as to what the violation actually was.
That’s no pretty lady! Thats my wife...errr.
You think the crew would realize the lucky charms of the lady and fly her and her husband to pose at all the tracks since before that picture they’d never won at Las Vegas.
It’s snowing here Roccus. High desert living at it’s worst.
ESPN article about the circus & next appeal. There’s something blatant going on here. From the article:
“Seldom if ever has Hendrick been more defiant about something in this sport. He’ll tell you without blinking an eye that the same car with the same C-posts went through NASCAR’s tech 16 times and passed before going to Daytona. He’ll tell you it is the same car Johnson won with last year at Talladega.”
What have you done to me??? Only 3 races into the season and I have already used up 2 of my drivers!!!
You aren’t going to wreck me are you? You are right behind me and I am feeling loose in the turns.
and two of my putters.
Macs or PCs?
well ... got an iPad (3) and Apple TV today. Watching a movie right now.
Ahhh, you’ve figured out how to run the same driver in the “A” “B” and “C” slots, have you...
Be nice or I’ll post the photos your wife sent me...
Darn it. I thought what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas...
Thanks for all the great pics and race report!!
PS.. - How as the room service? Didja have a in-room hot tub? Did that at the Luxor years ago..
Wifey is still amused with her iPhone and hasn't gone for a tablet,, yet.

Daytona plans partial repave prior to July race
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Daytona International Speedway will undergo a partial repair and repave session after an intense fire in Turn 3 during this year’s Daytona 500.
This weekend, Daytona is hosting the American Motorcylist Association’s feature Daytona 200, but has seen no problems from having a variety of bikes on the surface.
“We’re looking forward to a successful Daytona 200,” track president Joie Chitwood III said in a statement. “Since the jet dryer incident occurred on Feb. 27, we have washed and cleaned the affected area of the race track in Turn 3 multiple times and applied street bond.
“We have worked closely with AMA Pro Racing officials and we’re both very confident it will not present any issues during the Daytona 200.”
The speedway’s plan calls to mind a more extensive project that was begun after the 2010 Coke Zero 400 Sprint Cup Series race.
Well Well Well... so the saga continues. Wasn’t it repaved just a few years ago?
seems like just yesterday,, I think it was just a couple years ago.. 2010..
We did the Luxor w/Premier Sports in 2010. We decided to go w/the Bellagio pkg this time as it was more centered on the strip; I’d give the Luxor a 1 star and the Bellagio a solid 4 stars. The Bellagio has 5 pools, a beautiful conservatory garden, excellent service and decor. The “Lake Bellagio” room was a $40.00 per night upgrade but well worth it.
That place has sure grown,, I’d love to stay at a Wynn resort / hotel for a week.. but my mortgage has priorities. ;-)
