Newt moves to spoiler role to force deadlocked convention

Even in an open convention, Gingrich wouldn't have a prayer of getting the nomination. But that seems to matter less to him than blowing up Mitt Romney.

Gingrich no longer says he can capture the 1,144 delegates required to wrap up the Republican nomination. Instead, he now speaks frankly about a new plan: Keep Romney from getting to 1,144 by the end of the GOP primary season in June, and then start what Gingrich calls a "conversation" about who should be the Republican nominee. That conversation, the plan goes, would lead to a brokered GOP convention at which Gingrich would emerge as the eventual nominee.

"Our goal first is to keep Romney well below 1,000," Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said an hour before Gingrich addressed a small crowd of disappointed supporters gathered at the Wynfrey Hotel. "It doesn't have to be 1,000, or 1,050 -- it has to be below 1,100." If Gingrich succeeds, Hammond continued, "This will be the first time in our party in modern politics that we're going to go to the convention floor."

The media (and that includes Fox) doesn’t like anyone who doesn’t live in a “city”! We’re all a bunch of hicks. Well I am proud to be a hick! I am sick of being insulted by members of the media. The main reason I like Newt is because of his handling of the media! Go get the bas*aR*S Newt!!

No, it won't. It happened between Reagan and Ford in 1976. That isn't exactly ancient history. It was my first presidential election.

Oh one more reason for nominating Sarah. She is already a known figure. She won’t need to spend millions on name recognition. She also has the experience from 2008. She will come out of the gate campaigning hard on day one. I don’t think any other dark horse candidate would be able to start so fast and so strong.

Well Santorum wanted a one on one, Two man race. Will I hope he is ready.

“the former Massachusetts governor and his allies have invested nearly $5 million on the next big prize in the state-by-state race for the Republican nomination: Illinois, which will hold its primary on Tuesday. Most of the spending will go toward ads that attack Rick Santorum, now Romney's chief rival.”

Thank you! I’ll keep contributing so long as you stay in. Even if you go to convention.

Do any of you remember the last time the nominee was chosen AT the GOP convention? Remember when Ford was chosen over Reagan in 1976? I remember one announcer saying “maybe they've just chosen the wrong guy”. Well DUH.

4 years later we got Reagan after suffering endlessly with malaise of Jimma Carter. Ugh. I remember it well.

Also I'm sick of getting stuck with the choices of New Hampshire, Iowa, etc. If we have say 2 or 3 super Tuesdays throughout our primary and make them CLOSED primaries, then we'll have a good system. More people to start with, not the chosen few and RINOs like Romney.

My 2 cents says this is a Tea Party quiet dislike of Romney and the elite GOP can't stand that we don't want this guy.

If Sarah Palin gets close to the nomination, many here will have diarrhea, from both ends.

“It happened between Reagan and Ford in 1976. That isn’t exactly ancient history. It was my first presidential election.”

The average voter is probably around 45-50 years old. A 50 year old man would have first been able to vote in the 1980 election. It might not be ancient history, but most of us were too young to remember that race.

I don’t buy into the GOPe and media’s argument that this is bad for the party. I think it’s excellent. The PEOPLE are having a voice. The way I see it, there is a reason that Mitt hasn’t sealed up the nomination yet. If people were excited about him he’d be the candidate by now. What we are seeing is the sane people of this country fighting against the establishment.

Every election cycle we’re told that we need to be moderate to win. These folks have given us McCain, Dole, Ford. Weak losers all. The anti-establishment candidate gave us one of the best presidents we’ve seen now or ever will, Reagan. Conservatism WINS. Not weak, limp-wristed moderation.

A brokered convention (whatever that means) is an excellent display of the people exercising their will.

Of course the media and establishment is left scratching their heads because they don’t live in the real world where the rest of us do.

Took 10 posts to find one that knows what their talking about.

NEWT has some/much unfinished business with Mr. Romney, and it's going to be fun to watch at the convention. Romney is no match for Newt, ever.

GO NEWT GINGRICH all the way.

One thing for sure with NEWT in this race, he is explaining the history of America, which MANY do not know, he is educationg them now, they best listen.

They will try to force a Mitch Daniels, Chris Christie, or Paul Ryan on us.

Daniels - Better than Santorum, much better than Romney.

Ryan - Much better than Santorum or Romney, arguably better than Newt.

Christie - at least better than Romney.

I'd take this two out of three chance, any day of the week.

I see there’s a ready-made running mate for Myth out there. She’s retiring from the Senate. Olympia Snowe.

"If his ONLY effect is to run Romney out of the race then I am all for it"

I agree. "I would rather see a Gingrich/Santorum team-up at the convention"

I think they should team up now as Santorum/Gingrich. I'm not sure how many votes would defect from Gingrich if he accepted VP to Santorum. But if they teamed up now, they would stop Romney from getting any more Winner takes all states.

Anything can happen after a first ballot; the most likely scenario remains a Romney first-ballot victory. It took ten ballots to nominate Harding in 1920; 103 for John Davis in 1924.
