Not really. If you have a sufficient amount of fuel vaporized inside the car you can get an explosive mixture. It would probably blow out the windows and doors. To get this mixture you would need to pour the fuel out inside the interior and then light it. However as you stated we do not get the spectacular explosions that they show on the movies. To get this effect you need to disperse the fuel into the air as droplets. A small explosive charge inside a container of fuel will do this for you quite easily.
The IRA (evil bastards to the core) used this technique in the pub bombings in Ireland back in the 70s. The would place a container of gas on the outside of a window of the pub. A small explosive charge was attached to the side of the container, the side away from the window. When it was set off the fuel would be blown into the pub as small droplets that would then burn at an astounding rate because of their huge surface area. This burned alive men women and children and also made a tremendous explosion.
A milk jug 1/2 full of petrol with some det cord wrapped around it makes a nice sploshun.
