PALATINE, Ill.--Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on late Wednesday expressed frustration with both the news media and the Republican establishment for failing to understand his large ideas for transforming American politics.
As calls for Gingrich to bow out of the race grew louder after his second-place finishes in Mississippi and Alabama--two states he said he had a chance to win--the candidate seemed to be in low spirits and offered a grumpy analysis of the state of the GOP primary to a crowd that gathered for a Lincoln Day dinner in this northwestern suburb of Chicago.
The thing I find most disheartening of this campaign is the difficulty of talking about large ideas on a large scale, because the news media cant cover it and, candidly, my opponents cant comprehend it, Gingrich said, while also vowing to continue his campaign to the convention in Tampa this summer.
He called himself the only candidate of the four still in the contest focused on ideas and solutions and not just the usual politics, and the only one advocating wholesale change to a political system that is methodically and deliberately stupid.
Other parts of his speech covered topics ranging from President Lincoln promoting the transcontinental railroad to the antifraud system of the American Express company. Gingrich spoke of the need for a technological revolution in government, but he lamented that no one but him seemed to understand that.
Let me just talk for a second about technology and grand opportunities, he said. Other than Ronald Reagan, I know of no Republican in my lifetime whos been able to talk about this. Thats why Im still running. The former House speaker from Georgia has recently focused his campaign on high gas prices, promising as president to restore them to no more than $2.50 a gallon. But he often also speaks at length on a wide range of topics, covering everything from brain science to space exploration to the need to utilize modern management practices to reform entire sectors of the government.
I want to be the candidate of science and technology, he said. Whether its on energy, its on stopping crooks in Medicare and Medicaid, its on getting into space, which I was ridiculed [for], or it is on helping you make sure that your family doesnt suffer from something that could be avoided.
And he chided fellow Republicans for failing to see the need for a party makeover. The GOP, he said, has been governing like the Democratic Party since 2006, when it lost control of the Congress.
We cannot be a normal party, he told the suburban Republican crowd. If we run a normal campaign, trying to govern within the framework of the current system, we have no future, because people would rather have Democrats do it. They at least enjoy it.
What’s he talking about?
Sound like a pick up line he used on the ladies.
I’d like to say, I voted for him in Georgia here. But this is just plain-assed arrogant delusion.
He hits the nail on the head right there.
Its hard to buck the system. Newt is probably feeling pretty frayed from the pressure to quit.
Newt, the smartest boy in the class never gets elected to the top job.
Love ya man, but as I wrote you before the campaign started, maybe V-P or Sec. of State is the spot for you.
I love Newt but does anyone have the Kim Jong Il from Team America “ Im So Ronrey”?
You would have to do more than read a National Journal report by Sarah Huisenga to find out.
Anybody have a link to the video? I doubt this reporter is unbiased.
The MSM has figured out that the best way for them to handle Newt is to pretend he isn’t there. They refuse to mention him, unless of course they lump him in with the deranged Ron Paul.
Mitt and Little Saint Ricky are probably as uncomprehending of the Big Ideas that Newt is talking about as any average D.C. buffoon. They don’t care unless it 1.) Gives them money, and/or, 2.) Gives them power. Good for America? So what... What do I get out of it?
The only candidate left who sees D.C. as the problem, and not a solution is Newt. Both Mittens and Little Saint Ricky see D.C. and Big Government as a tool to use, so that they can better mold the Country to suit their wishes. Get Government to do more. Newt correctly views Government as something to be cut back and starved, so that freedom can again grow.
I can’t get no respect.
You aren’t that unique, Newt. Poor widdle puddy.
I’m so ronery, so ronery, so ronery and sadry arone
Dere’s no one, just me onry, sitting on my rittle throne
I work rearry hard and make up great prans
But nobody ristens no one understands
Seems rike no one takes me seriorousry
And so, I’m ronery, a ritter ronery, poor rittle me
There’s nobody, I can rerate to, feer rike a bird in a cage
It’s kind of sirry, but no rearry, because it’s firring my body with rage
I’m the smartest most crever most physicry fit
But nobody else seems to reararize it
When I change the rorld maybe they’ll notice me
But until then, I’ll just be ronery
Yeah, a rittle ronery, poor rittle me
I’m so ronery
I’m for Newt, but when I saw the title of the thread, that was the first thing that came to mind.
As Newt supporters like to say - Rick is a whiner. Who’s whining now?
Newt, I can’t get no respect - Gingrich is the correct answer.
Sorry, but, when Freepers keep up their constant put down of Rick, calling him Little Saint Ricky, I just have to throw it back at them.
And, yes, I can vote for either Newt or Rick. I’m sill not convinced I can vote for Mittens. However, I guess it depends on how far obama goes during this election cycle and how deep my loathing can go.
No need to put words in my mouth.
Little Saint Ricky is a terrible candidate, mainly due to the fact that he is a Big Government guy. We have had plenty enough of that and it is time we tried something different.
The path to victory will not be by getting people to vote against something. Victory is acheived by getting people to vote for something, like Reagan was able to do. Neither Mittens or Little Saint Ricky offer any ideas that are compelling, only the same old focus grouped boilerplate. If either of them are the nominee, I will vote for them simply because they are light-years better than the alternative. The difference is, I am only voting against Il Douche and not for someone whom I feel will bring America back.
Besides, as stated before, the rats are praying (in their own special way) that Little Saint Ricky is the nominee because they will gut him like a fish.
I feel your pain Newt!
If the whole set of statements was put together and in context, we might know what he really said and meant. Some fools will no doubt be talking about his "enormous ego" and "hubris", but even the words in the article are basically true - he's the only one who has put together cogent analyses of where we are and where we need to head. He may be frustrated, but the article tries to make him sound whiny because he points out some sorry truths - the rest of the field and the GOP-e either don't comprehend and grasp the whole picture or they are deliberatley avoiding it because it indicates the need for real and substantive changes in the course we are on.
