Ten days before the 2008 presidential election, as blame was beginning to be laid out for John McCains likely defeat, a top communications adviser to the campaign wrote a detailed strategy memo focused on how to preserve the reputation of another key adviser, Steve Schmidt, POLITICO has learned.

The protective maneuver sheds more light on the final days of the 2008 campaign, a period of low morale marked by tensions between the Palin and McCain camps and the expectation of defeat.

Thankfully, and rightfully so, some members of the political punditry are already coming his defense (Rove, McKinnon, Scarborough), however a well organized and coordinated effort is needed to defend Steves good reputation, Jones wrote in the memo, which was sent to two partners, Adam Mendelsohn and Kirill Goncharenko.
Jones wrote it, sources said, at the request of top Mercury brass, as the campaign wound down and Schmidt was returning to his MPA role. At the time, the Republican nominee was sinking in the polls and the anonymous finger-pointing was well underway in press accounts.
The memo was intended as an in-house Mercury document but it was discovered by some McCain staffers who were trying to wrap up the campaign, and were troubled by any effort to start looking at damage control before the votes had been cast, a source familiar with it said.
With the subject line Schmidt, the memo went on that the three, along with another former Mercuryite Terry Nelson, would engage in this project, and seek out the help of other supportive Republicans and some friendly Democrats.

GOP scum.
BFD, we all know that Palin was the only thing that made Juan at all palatable.
Well, well, well...! Looks like we can now all say we told them so!
As time goes on, Sarah Palin stands untouched, while McCain, Schimidt, Wallace and others stink more and more.
Palin actually tried to fight for this country, a platitude she believed in, while McCain merely paid it lip service.
I always wondered if McCain was turned in Hanoi, and became a high level mole for the Commies since then.
When he hugged his former NVA torturer, and then dissed the POW-MIA families in 1992, I did not wonder anymore.
This started with the arrival of the bizarre ‘exit polls’ showing Palin as the reason voted for Obama.
It was nowhere in the narrative in the weeks before the election because she had done well in her debate vs Biden and was pulling tens of thousands to her events, where both McCain and Biden were pulling hundreds to thousands.
The exit polls were the first phase in the Palin attacks. They had some impact in the beginning in terms of public opinion immediately, but settled in to drive up the narrative into fact as this theme was pounded over and over again over the following 12 months.
This memo shows how despicable that group was, and Steve Schmidt is scum. Nicole Wallace is even worse.
I wonder if that included FR?
Put Nicole Whatsherface Wallace in that pile also.
I don’t care if Vanity has her on his stinkin’ panel or not.
The GOP would rather save Schmidt than Palin???
Instead protecting and mentoring magnificent young pol for their future, for their political bench, for fund-raising, they hung her out to dry.
It was irresponsible and counterproductive.
And unforgivable, a last straw for me as a Republican.
Shmidt is a turd eater
Articles like this are why people like me are giving up on Republicans. McCain was DEAD IN THE WATER until he selected Palin.
Then McCain listened to the GOP brass and let his henchmen go after Palin balming her for the defeat.
I have NO RESPECT WHATSOEVER for John McCain. He let his own people destroy the person that kept him with 10 pts of Obama. Withour her, McCain would have lost by 30.
I agree. Nothing has remotely severed my lifelong support and allegiance to the GOP as much as the disgusting, backstabbing treatment given to Palin. I have zero faith and zero trust nowadays in the Republican Party. Five years ago, never in my wildest imagination, would I have expected to find myself in this position.
I think I would enjoy Anonymous doing a info dump on the GOP. It would show the party is full of traitors. Common voters would want to kick the s*** out of the party leaders. Start with Schmidt.
I always wondered if McCain was turned in Hanoi, and became a high level mole for the Commies since then.
Bingo!!!! WINNER,WINNER,WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, Sarah stands alone in God’s Truth, charred but unscathed.
I'm so glad you pointed that out. Perhaps some of our more vocal PDS sufferers had an agenda to follow and perhaps were even being paid. Even now we may have some infiltrators doing GOP-E work on our forum. At least it seems that way sometimes when I hear people pretending to support some conservative or another but are really just trolling for Romney.
Thanks for that link....I had forgotten that Romney was said to be concerned that she could win the nom in 2012.
Scum, all of them, they hate us like the Dems hate us, maybe more.
bttt
John McCain’s legacy will be that he was a traitor and a coward..instead of defending his running mate he decided that the best thing to do was either join them, or act shocked that they are trashing her. I saw McCain last week on Fox News Sunday, he couldn’t even half ass defend Sarah Palin..his statement was “I dont understand why Wallace and Schmidt are saying this” this is the kind of President he would have been.
The campaign was a disaster from the start, Schmidt and Wallace wanted Romney to be VP, when that failed, they decided to sabotage the campaign, with McCain’s help, so that Romney would be the Frontrunner in 2012..all are a bunch of disgusting roaches, and that is the #1 reason why I can’t stand Romney’s face, I see the people he associates with, and who do his bidding in his name
