The School Committee on Thursday gave first-step approval to a policy that would provide students, ages 12 and older, with access to free condoms, aimed at helping to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy.
The committee voted 5-1 in favor of the Comprehensive Reproductive Health Policy. The policy, which also includes a provision for counseling for the students, still needs a second vote of approval before it is final.
Under the draft policy, parents will be notified of condom availability in the schools and will have the opportunity to deny permission (opt out) for access to condoms for their student(s).
This is the right move and the smart move to make, said Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, chairman of the School Committee.
Holyoke adopted a similar condom-access policy for students in the middle schools and high schools in 2004, officials said.
Sarno and other committee members said that teens who engage in unprotected sex can harm their own health and can become young parents, more prone to drop out of school, to be less successful, and to be more likely to raise children in poverty. The condoms would be provided by the state Department of Public Health.
Committee member Peter Murphy cast the sole vote against the policy, saying he was not comfortable with the idea of providing condoms to students who are as young as 12 years old when it is not legal for them to engage in sex.
The condoms would be available from school nurses and through the high school-based clinics, officials said. Upon receipt, students will receive counseling including information about abstinence and instruction on proper storage and use of contraceptives, according to the draft policy.

God help us all.
Georgetown "law students", $1000.00 per year.
I don't get it!
The old ugly gal starts breaking in those 12 year old’s her problem is fixed. They will not care that she is an old liberal attorney and they will line up, LOL
Free? Nothings free, us real tax payers pay for all this free crap!
Of course by the time these kids get to high school, they are mothers of two and they are 19 years old.
Anything to keep the electorate stupid and democrat.
At age 12 (1956) I would not know what a condom was.
By 14, I had heard of “rubbers” but had not seen one.
Western Civilization is in the toilet.
Those 5 people should be made to register as sex offenders
Six years ago the public high schools were already 50% Hispanic. Invite another people, and then be surprised when they have different customs and mores.
5 bucks? No way! The photo of him on the package is enough to ruin the moment anyways. Maybe that is the point?
There's a theory that you can toss condoms at such a mass and make it shrink.
I doubt it ~ RomneyKKKare keeps attracting more of them to the state and eventually it's going to just flip over upside down and that'll be that.
“This is Massachusetts. The place is swarming with uncontrollable Leftwingtards. ‘
I’ve been a MA resident my entire long life.
I don’t recognize it anymore.
The old-time MA Democrats would be horrified at this.
I imagine the typical 12 y/o girl is not going to be interested in this "service". I am curious though: if liberals want to "provide students, ages 12 and older, with access to free condoms, aimed at helping to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy" exactly how high are those rates that they require an action that implicitly condones sex in grades 5-7?
It’s not about pregnancies and disease. It’s about forever settling the question of IF teens should be having sex and shifts the discussion to WHEN.
The sex positive agenda seeks to see everyone sexually active at every age with no moral judgments of any kind.
I went to school in the Springfield public school system. Back in the day they could have given out truckloads of condoms and it wouldn’t have mattered. Not many of us were gettin’ any.
The times they are a changing.
I say we beat em at their own game
Democrats propose free condoms for all insured
Republicans need to come out for free sex for the uninsured
If we can get Sandra Fluke on our side, we'll have the national problem solved.
I wonder if Monica Lewinski would switch parties
