In 1959, Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman took a song to a doo-wop group from the Bronx and gave them a more commercial sound.

Having served an apprenticeship with AAA minor league artists, it was time for Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman to court immortality. By 1960, the Drifters had been around for nearly a decade and had gone through a series of producers and lead singers. They had pioneered the use of strings in their recording sessions and had done something truly original the year before with “There Goes My Baby” with its triangle and tympani rhythmic pulse. With a little push from Lieber and Stoller, Doc and Mort would give them three major hits with songs that would far outlive them. Catch the use of chimes in this recording!

Isn’t the last line supposed to be something like “may you be in Heaven 1/2 hour before the devil knows you’re dead?”

:) ;)

*hugs* btw
