Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman mixed rock and roll with a big band sound for a hit in 1959. This was a major production, although it’s largely forgotten today.

Having served an apprenticeship with AAA minor league artists, it was time for Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman to court immortality. By 1960, the Drifters had been around for nearly a decade and had gone through a series of producers and lead singers. They had pioneered the use of strings in their recording sessions and had done something truly original the year before with “There Goes My Baby” with its triangle and tympani rhythmic pulse. With a little push from Lieber and Stoller, Doc and Mort would give them three major hits with songs that would far outlive them. Catch the use of chimes in this recording!

A Word To The Weary

March 17, 2012

The people of Israel were struggling. They had been taken captive by the Babylonians and forced to live in a country far from home. What could the prophet Isaiah give these weary people to help them?

He gave them a prophecy of hope. It was a message from God relating to the promised Messiah. In Isaiah 50:4, the Savior Himself described the comfort and consolation He would one day bring: “The Lord God has given Me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary.”

These were words of dual comfort—both to the people in exile and to future generations whose lives would be touched by Jesus’ compassion. In the Gospels we see how Christ fulfilled the prophecy with “a word in season to him who is weary.” To the crowds who followed Him, Christ proclaimed: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). Words of compassion indeed!

Jesus left us an example of how to minister to people who have grown weary. Do you know someone who needs a timely word of encouragement or the listening ear of a concerned friend? A word of comfort to the weary can go a long way.

Neither life nor death can ever
From the Lord His children sever,
For His love and deep compassion
Comforts them in tribulation. —Berg
Compassion is needed to heal the hurts of others.

Read: Isaiah 50:4-10

God has given Me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. —Isaiah 50:4

In 1960, Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman wrote a magnificent song that would receive placement on many albums and even cross over to the country charts, becoming a hit twice. Note that the rhythmic pulse is carried entirely by triangle, guitar and the Drifters in background vocals.

The Drifters: “Save the Last Dance for Me”

Dolly Parton got a country hit out of this in 1984.

In 1960, Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman would give Ben E. King something to sing about with a song that even had Motown artists and Lou Reed record it over the years. Note the skittering string figures that open the song.

The Drifters: “This Magic Moment”

In 1969, Jay Black slowed it down and gave it a more conventional production.

Jay & the Americans: “This Magic Moment”

”Lost Highway” was a failed David Lynch film from 1997 that was impossible to follow, and Lou Reed did a version of this song on the soundtrack that is unlike anything else.

Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman had their string of hits with the Drifters continue into 1961. That’s Charlie Thomas on lead vocal.
