South Korea on Monday condemned rival North Korea's planned rocket launch as a "grave provocation", saying it was a disguised attempt to develop a long-range ballistic missile capable of delivering nuclear weapons.
Seoul also extended a security alert in the capital, and said it was concerned the North might follow the ballistic missile launch with another nuclear test.
The North announced on Friday it would put a satellite into orbit next month barely two weeks after reaching an agreement with Washington to suspend long-range missile launches as part of a deal to restart food aid.
"Our government defines North Korea's so-called working satellite launch plan as a grave provocation to develop a long-distance delivery means for nuclear weapons by using ballistic missile technology," presidential spokesman Park Jung-ha said in a statement.
Washington says the North's long-range ballistic missile program is progressing quickly, and last year said the American mainland could come under threat within five years.
The secretive North has twice tested a nuclear device, but experts doubt whether it yet has the ability to miniaturize an atomic bomb to place atop a warhead.
Pyongyang is believed to have enough fissile material to make up to a dozen nuclear bombs, and in 2010 unveiled a uranium enrichment facility to go with its plutonium program which opened a second route to making an atomic weapon. …

I am probably wayyyyyy out in left field on this, but I thought we gave them a bunch of food to stop their nuclear work. I guess we will add this to our collection of broken treaties with the North Koreans. Probably quickest ever.

He gets it, the South Koreans understand what lame-brained hussein does not or willfully will-not. That is, at this stage (pardon the pun) of their missile development there is absolutely no difference between a so-called satellite test launch or a test launch of an IRBM/ICBM. No difference.
They (the North Koreans) are still working on their vehicle, the Taepodong-2. They learn just as much about vehicle and subsystems' performance and/or problems from a "satellite launch" as they would from a more provocative declared missile test.
They are working on the vehicle here, no matter what they claim the use of it is. I'm sure they have another group working on ruggedizing the nuclear science experiment into a deliverable nuclear weapon.
hussein is a neophyte (at best) at global politics. The NKs are playing him and his cohorts like a cheap fiddle, laughing all the time. Yet another foolishly idealistic liberal willing to suspend disbelief and engage in another treaty/agreement with NK. Which of course NK will ignore the moment it becomes inconvenient to their plans. Treaties with NK are not worth the paper they are written on. Literally. Of course hussein doesn't care what danger he places America in, economicly nor militarily, as long as he advances his Marxist/socialist/fascist agenda here.
Let’s not forget Hillary’s role in all this. Either she was instrumental in this agreement with all the shelf-life of an Obama promise or he and his minions have frozen her out. If the latter case, then expect some extreme gloating from cankles.

According to an ABC Radio Australia article, “In a notice to the UN’s International Maritime Organisation, North Korea has said the first stage of the rocket will fall in international waters between China and South Korea.
The second stage is expected to splash down just 190 kilometres east of the northern Philippines.”
Maybe they’ll anticipate “Compass malfunction”!

Australia’s geopolitics has always made it vulnerable - some of its northern neighbours can be less than friendly. The Japs certainly were during WW2. Southeast Asia/Asia Pacific region (Australia in particular) I think is being revisited in recent yrs as part of American geostrategy for the region. Maybe that’s why there was an agreement to increase US military presence in Australia several months ago. Although, the increase in numbers was definitely not overwhelming.
I don’t know much about technical defence stuff. Only read that the Aegis Combat System was acquired by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), but don’t think it is fully operational as yet or that it won’t be commissioned until 2014.
