JACKSON Thousands of Mississippi state employees would lose civil service protections for two years, meaning they could be fired more easily than they can now, under a bill passed Thursday by the Senate.
The measure, approved 29-19, removes protections currently enforced by the state Personnel Board.
Gov. Phil Bryant and Lt. Gov Tate Reeves, both Republicans, are pushing the measure, saying it will make it easier for agencies to slim down.

If you turn them loose, I believe they can streamline those agencies, Brown said.
Long over due!
NYC would benefit from eliminating civil service protections for teachers, and killing the teachers unions.
Now if they can also start on Tenure; they have a chance to have a real education system as well.
Prediction: if it passes, legal challenges will tie it up for years.
I think most states would benefit.
The DOT in Mississippi needs FBI investigation. It is bloated and corrupt from top to bottom.
“...Senators have passed such bills previously, but they always failed in a Democratic-controlled House. Republicans, though, took control of the House in January. A House proposal, which had not advanced to the Senate as of Thursday afternoon, would give only a one-year window...”
It has passed.
Thanks for the good news ping Islander7.
Greece had to pass the identical rule.
any minute now the dept of injustice will file a lawsuit against our state, this will not be allowed to stand.
No way. Too many hardcore Democrats work for the DOT. Around here the DOT is nepotism central. AG Hood also has too many supporters in the DOT.
You make my point perfectly clear. Thanks!
