No Kugel for you! (Big Brother Bloomberg bans food donations)

So much for serving the homeless.

The Bloomberg administration is now taking the term “food police” to new depths, blocking food donations to all government-run facilities that serve the city’s homeless.

In conjunction with a mayoral task force and the Health Department, the Department of Homeless Services recently started enforcing new nutritional rules for food served at city shelters. Since DHS can’t assess the nutritional content of donated food, shelters have to turn away good Samaritans.

For over a decade, Glenn Richter and his wife, Lenore, have led a team of food-delivery volunteers from Ohab Zedek, the Upper West Side Orthodox congregation.

They’ve brought freshly cooked, nutrient-rich surplus foods from synagogue events to homeless facilities in the neighborhood. (Disclosure: I know the food is so tasty because I’ve eaten it — I’m an OZ member.) The practice of donating such surplus food to homeless shelters is common among houses of worship in the city.

DHS Commissioner Seth Diamond says the ban on food donations is consistent with Mayor Bloomberg’s emphasis on improving nutrition for all New Yorkers. A new interagency document controls what can be served at facilities — dictating serving sizes as well as salt, fat and calorie contents, plus fiber minimums and condiment recommendations.

The city also cites food-safety issues with donations, but it’s clear that the real driver behind the ban is the Bloomberg dietary diktats.

Diamond insists that the institutional vendors hired by the shelters serve food that meets the rules but also tastes good; it just isn’t too salty. So, says the commissioner, the homeless really don’t need any of the synagogue’s food.

Glenn Richter’s experience suggests otherwise. He says the beneficiaries — many of them senior citizens recovering from drug and alcohol abuse — have always been appreciative of the treats he and other OZ members bring.

This is incredible. A clear goal of rat government at all levels is to eliminate one citizen from helping another. In less than a year the Left will cheer the closing of Catholic hospitals.

All Hail Obama!

Can anyone explain to me how Bloomberg was able to run as a Republican!

IIRC, there was nobody running on the republican ticket, so he entered the "primary" unopposed. He didn't want to have to run against any other dems until the final election.

ANY American politician that gets in the way of volunteerism should immediately resign and deport himself. Why is Bloomberg in America instead of France, anyway????

With these Socialist’s pants in a wad about the quality of food donations, what they really are doing is setting up the elimination of the religious route to food donations. Big Government will use this food standards ruse to knock out the Christian service operations and set up their own Government kitchens for the homeless. The tax payers will pay to the nose (to kill the religious services) and the homeless will eat like a king at our expense. The Govenment will make sure none of them will want the dumpster food. They want to get them all addicted to the Government trough.

The Government hates competition. That’s why it seeks to eliminate all enforceable limits on its power. Like the Constitution.

Joe ... while working in Manhattan back in the 80s, I was a customer of Al Yeganeh. His store front operation was only 2 blocks from my office and I would often purchase his home made soup, exact change ready, just like on Seinfeld, except this was before the Seinfeld episode.

Can’t let the homeless actually enjoy food given from the goodness of somebody’s heart! Might make somebody gain a pound or two.

Bloomberg’s health nazis are the most disgusting people, and Bloomberg is disgusting, too.

Nanny State PING!

I belong to organizations that are always holding banquets from the members or guests - back in the day we’d load up any leftovers and send them to the shelter - now we just put it out the next day if anyone wants it - or we toss it.

Can’t donate anymore if anything is not sealed - well, none of it was sealed - just throw it out....

Well, it’s like the red cross... they don’t want your stuff, just make a cash donation that they can use as they see fit.

I’d imagine a thug like Bloomberg imagines the Government is just like the “Red Cross”.
