NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Wendy's is taking a bite out of Burger King in the fast food business.
Dave Thomas's restaurants became the No. 2-selling hamburger chain in the country last year, industry research firm Technomic said Monday, pushing Burger King back to the No. 3 spot. Burger King had been No. 2 spot since at least 1972, the earliest year for which Technomic has data.
Wendy's (WEN) U.S. sales totaled $8.5 billion last year, edging out Burger King and its $8.4 billion. Wendy's has roughly 5,900 locations in the U.S. compared with Burger King's 7,200.
McDonald's (MCD, Fortune 500), meanwhile, dwarfed both with over $34 billion in sales last year at its 14,098 U.S. locations. It's the largest restaurant chain in the country, followed by Subway, Starbucks (SBUX, Fortune 500), Wendy's and Burger King. (McDonald's phasing out tiny cages for pigs)
Five Guys Burgers and Fries ranked as the fastest-growing chain in the U.S. last year, Technomic said, followed by Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) and Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwich Shop.

In-N-Out Burger rocks!!
My favourite by far is five guys
I went to a burger king a few weeks ago for the first time in years. I’m impressed that they still exist.
I haven’t tried that new Wendys burger, but its pretty hard to beat the Whopper with cheese in a fast food joint.
MacDonald plain sucks
Have the best of both worlds..In N Out AND Chick Fil A’s within a 5 block radius in the middle of Hollywood. I get tired of both which is rare, got Fat Burger in between.
I remember her! LOL!
I could understand this. Burger Kings have all closed in this area. Their burgers are mushy slop heated in a microwave.
However, it appears that at some point, I will eventually make it over there. In the meantime, I like cooking burgers at home on the grill that I purchase from my butcher shop. Really thick burgers that I top off with a thick slab of swiss cheese and a mess of hot peppers sautéed in olive oil and garlic. All inside of a potato bun. It is really a good burger and should I open up a burger joint that sells them, I imagine I would do quite well.
We agree.
Recently I went to order and the cashier asked me if I wanted to look at the new "healthy menu". I told her "if I wanted healthy I would have gone to Subway"
Fortunately they've expanded beyond CA to spots in NV, AZ and TX.
I was hooked on the flame broiled taste at Burger King, especially the chicken, but Wendy’s is now the best tasting hamburger because it IS hamburger. Try it and it’ll take you back to what real meat tastes like. Makes me think of when we went to McD’s when i was a kid. When we went once a year, maybe 2 years?
“Their burgers are mushy slop heated in a microwave.”
They used to be grilled. Remember those days?
I just love Wendy’s!
#2..double cheeseburger, fries and soft drink.
Randy’s in Hamburger Heaven!
That’s weird, no SoCal locations..
Sam,
You sure would!
I can recall getting a Whopper in 1970 and the darn thing being delicious. That flame broiling was real. The junk they serve now isn’t even close.
The Whopper (or the triple in my case) is a great burger, my beef with BK is their mediocre fries.
The only burger that I ever buy at MacDonald is the plain old single with cheese.
I only buy those because you can eat them driving and in a rush.
Bt its like industrial food, a step above a space bar LOL
A Feb. 10, 2010, press release:
BURGER KING CORP. SUPPORTS FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMAS LETS MOVE CAMPAIGN
Im addicted to the chili. Always have been.
Never liked the Jack, McDonalds, Carls, BK or Wendy’s.
I really like In n Out, Fudruckers..... haven’t been to or found a Five Guys yet.
You are spot on!
Why they changed is beyond me..
The other night I went to burger king, and was really disappointed. I tried one of their new "special" burgers with bacon and bleu cheese. Dry, and just not very good.
Hardees (and Carls Jr) had a special burger called "The Steakhouse Burger" with bleu cheese, fried onions, and A1 sauce. Believe it or not, it REALLY worked! One of the best burgers ever from a drive through, though 5 Guys is really awesome too.
Mark
LoL!
I have not had a whopper in close to a year
Sorry to hear they futzed with it.
/johnny
I always favored BK. They have become so lousy I swore them off and have become a Wendy’s fan. BK used to be flame broiled, better quality. Now they suck. Unmotivated unprofessional staff, dirty grill, lousy ingredients.
If they don’t drastically improve, I predict BK’s demise.
The little known secret trick is to buy the Fries at MickeyD’s and then go across the street and order a burger at the King!
Wendy’s used to be awesome about 10 years ago and back. I could order a double cheeseburger and it was hot and greasy, so much so that the grease would leak out of the foil. It was freakin delicious!
Nowadays, they give me a dry, lukewarm burger that is $8.00 in a combo. (rip off)
Five Guys ain’t cheap either, but if I’m nearing $10.00 I’m going to get a better burger from there.
Too bad In-N-Out is only on the west coast!
Wendy’s Hot N Spicy Chicken w/lettuce, tomato, onion NO mayo (mayo on something spicy hot!?! What are they thinking?) fries w/sea salt and drink. Awesome!!!
And their burgers are good too:)
We have a five guys and it is good but your gonna pay.
Its a NE Texas thang ;)
The Smashburgers are gooood!
Considering how big they are Wendy’s food is still pretty decent.
Give me Sonic, Culver’s, or for that matter Buffalo Wild Wings food any day.
Once upon a time, it really did “take two hands to handle a Whopper”, but BK’s glory days were over once the Whopper became just another burger.
I don’t know why people try and compare Five Guys to In-N-Out. I tried Five Guys once but never again. Terrible!
If you’re not driving, sit and enjoy McD’s Angus Classic...(I like the one with Swiss and mushrooms) very good and very reminiscent of Red Robin burgers (for a lot less).
The Whopper was a great burger back in the day. The grills are all gone. I prefer a local diner with a working grill and fresh meat. I pay the same for a burger.
Butter burgers are good.
I have to say, Wendy’s really does appear to have stepped up its game with its new burgers, other sandwiches and milkshakes. Those new burgers are darn good.
How long and how much does it take to make your own burger? Geez?!
It’s the Frosties.
