Well, a 7.9 could certainly be catastrophic according to where it’s centered.

We could use one centered in Washington DC. :-)

Mexico City is dangerous in a quake because so much of it is built on lakebed fill, which tends to liquify in an earthquake.

Have no idea about the geology of the area where Malia is staying.

Has been dropped to a 7.6 now.

Yes Oaxaca is close by. The most distressing thing about the First Daughter story is that I am sure the Secret Service strongly advised against the trip. Malia probably pouted and Michelle told them to do it even if it put a big target on those agents and her classmates. I would not want to be in a third world country like Mexico for during a big earthquake like this.

It was lowered but I would bet it’s raised again towards 8.

They need to break the first daughter out now. Way to much shyte will be happening anywhere near the epicenter.

Lord protect her and her bodyguards as well as the people of Mexico.

That’s what we get for laughing at the earthquake predicting thread from this morning. They were two days early.

While it is fun to chuckle at those dolts, this quake is close enough to Baja to have put some real pressure on the San Andreas.

Of course, all-drama-all-the-time CNN is ginning up its coverage by soliciting for iReports, and the breast-beating crowd with its oh-the-humanity chants is warming up off camera while waiting for its cue.

Lots of unreinforced cinder block structures down there so this will be awful.

As much as I dislike Obama, I certainly don't want to see any harm come to his daughter or those other kids who are travelling with her.

(Silver lining: This will bring a lot of media attention to the trip, which the White House has been trying their best to downplay. It will also cause a lot of people to ask why it was necessary to spend all that taxpayer money to send the first daughter and 12 friends down there in the first place.)

INTERESTING.

Within the predicted timeline from an ATS predictor.
