Gingrich Worries About 'Committing A Santorum'

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said Tuesday that Rick Santorum "probably didn't mean to" say that he doesn't care about the unemployment rate but that it still illustrates a broader problem with the former Pennsylvania senator.

"I know that Santorum probably didn't mean to say it, but it's what he said," Gingrich said. "And, you know, when you're going to take on an incumbent President of the United States you better know what you believe. You better be able to say it very vividly. Can you imagine a Barack Obama dealing with somebody who says he doesn't care about the unemployment rate?"

This primary would be so absolutely boring without the wit and wisdom of Newt.

I'm in, til Newt's out.

Newt has more than enough of his own problems, and if he were the main anti-Romney the MSM would distorting everything Newt says. I’ll support anybody but Romney, but I wish Newt and Santorum could find a way not to throw elbows in the other’s direction.

Overall, I think we as a whole now lack the character to be self-governing. No matter what happens in the election we are going to see an economic meltdown. If Obamalini is in power it will likely lead to an accelerated move toward fascism by the left. If Mittens is in power, the welfare poles in the cities will riot, with an assist from the unions and the hard left.

Secession - a divorce - may well be the eventual outcome of all of it.

“Santorum has since clarified his comments, saying the point he was trying to make was that his candidacy “doesn’t hinge on whether the unemployment rate goes up or down.”’

Of course. Rick knows that while employment is important, which is why he’s working on getting more manufacturing, etc. in the U.S., the MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE IS FREEDOM!

What he refers to is rule 40 (b):

Each candidate for nomination for
President of the United States and Vice President of the
United States shall demonstrate the support of a
plurality of the delegates from each of five (5) or more
states, severally, prior to the presentation of the name of
that candidate for nomination.

This pretty well hoses a dark horse late entrant at the convention as well, I believe.

I don’t see how the clarification helps. So he doesn’t care about unemployment because it doesn’t affect his campaign? If I were on the unemployment line the last thing *I* would care about is Rick Santorum’s campaign.

He might instead have referred to what the Administration is claiming to be the unemployment rate vs the real unemployment rate, and gone down that road. Saying he doesn’t care about the unemployment rate but that he does care about his own campaign (which is how it will be read) is just idiotic.

If you’re asking me what Newt’s rationale might be, I suspect he intends to be President.

Unless he wins three more states, Gingrich cannot win at a divided convention either. At this point, only Romney and Santorum have won the five state minimum to be nominated. That is what the rule says.

How about some reality people. It appears Newt Campaign is Bankrupt it also appears Santorum Campaign is bankrupt.

Mittens has just beaten Santorum/Gingrich voters combined by 30k votes. His funding will continue to flood in.

Neither can continue at this pace. Lack of Funding is killing both Candidates they need a game changer to equalize the Mittens cash advantage.

Since it appears some of you may know the RNC rules. Let me ask a question or point me in the right direction and I will look it up.

What happens if Santorum / Newt go ahead and decides to become P/VP? What then?

There is a way to know yet... before the actual number of delegates “secured” by each candidate is known. ......This is why delegates has been the name of the game from the beginning.

This may also refer to the situation at the convention after voting is completed....... The number of delegates required to win is 1144..... It now appears that a further qualification is that the nominee win a plurality of the delegates in at least five States.

But I also hear Delegates can change the rules.

I understood what Rick meant right away, and I explained it in my last post.

Rick DOES care about employment, but what IF unemployment DOES come back significantly before the General Election (which it probably won’t), there are other issues, too, like getting rid of Obamacare, our 2nd amendment rights, and freedom, and so forth.

What’s one-issue Romney going to say if employment comes back? Obamacare certainly won’t be a good issue for Mr. Romney(care).

Since Santorum is the only other candidate who can be nominated, so far, he needs to win three states, or he should withdraw and plead with his supporters to support Santorum. At the moment, that is the only alternative to a Romney nomination.

Best bets:
Louisiana - currently 3rd
Wisconsin - distant 3rd
North Carolina - 3rd
Texas - 3rd
(recent polls)

He was leading in WV, NE, and MT, but that was back in November.

Arkansas, Kentucky, and South Dakota have no polls I can find.

I don’t know if this applies to a floor fight. If true, Newt (or anyone else) can come in and contest during the second and later vote, as long as he surpasses a plurality of 5 state’s delegates.

Why not just answer the question. Why does Rick want to give manufacturers preferential treatment through the tax code? Why only lower that corporate tax rate on manufacturing to zero? Why not on other sectors? Are those jobs less valuable? Does it have to do with the fact that manufacturing jobs are more heavily unionized?

Newt won’t run as third party.

But if it takes Newt, Paul and to a greater degree Santorum to peel delegates away from Mitt, why should anybody get out?

Newt didn’t hurt Rick in Ill. or any other state. Mitt did.

Exactly. Every part of the private sector is suffering, and you are exactly right about the union factor. Santorum never shook off the union shackles his entire career in PA. he did their bidding.

You don’t seem to understand what many of us here have understood for awhile. This race is now about denying Romney delegates and forcing a brokered convention. Santorum can not win the nomination outright. Romney’s best chance to win outright is if Newt drops out because half of Newt’s support would go to Romney.

I would like some clarification. Does the rule state that the candidate must take those delegates via an election process or that he just must have a plurality. If it is the latter then Gingrich can become a nominee legitimately after the first round of delegates votes, if the convention is brokered. The second round five states can send their delegates to him. Therefore, Gingrich could be a legitimate nominee.

I understand quite well. What it seems to be coming down to is that unless Newt can win three more states, which is looking less likely, he might better stop Romney by jumping on the Santorum bandwagon. I cannot expect he would do that, nor would I ask it. He cannot seem to overcome his negatives at this point. I do not know what he can do to change that when his biggest money supporter appears to have dropped him. What do you see as his path forward from here?

I believe the rules are that delegates can only vote for those nominated. The nominations come before the first vote is cast at the convention, so I suspect that he cannot be nominated without five states. I will try to read the full document tomorrow.
