Media Matters Launches New Ad Campaign Slamming Rush Limbaugh

Jaywon Choe
March 22, 2012

Despite the media firestorm surrounding Rush Limbaugh having died down, the conservative radio host isn't off the hook just yet.

According to the Washington Times, the liberal watchdog group Media Matters has launched a $100,000 ad campaign criticizing the host for calling Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and "prostitute" after she testified before the House on contraception.

The ads are currently being broadcast in eight cities, with some urging listeners to tell their local radio stations to take Limbaugh's show off the air and including the telephone numbers of stations broadcasting Limbaugh's show.

In response, Premier Radio Networks, which syndicates Limbaugh's show, released the following statement:

"This is part of an organized political campaign by professional special interest groups being waged to silence Rush Limbaugh and intimidate those who want to advertise on his show. This is not about women, it’s not about ethics, and it’s not about the nature of our public discourse — it’s a direct attack on America’s guaranteed First Amendment right to free speech. It’s essentially a call for censorship masquerading as high-minded indignation — and it’s a blatant political attempt to silence an enormously popular, influential voice because they don’t like his point of view."

(I suggest you call the radio station and express your support for Rush)

$100,000? In 8 cities?

So they're basically going after the eyeballs that are watching reruns of "Saved by the Bell" at 3am.

Good luck with that.

I love this, they are making Limbaugh even more well known. The word is that right now advertising on Limbaugh’s show is a bargain at last months rates. His listening base has grown significantly since all this started.

Which is why the other piece of this scam is a whispering campaign by anonymous “radio insiders” with “inside information” that proves this is really and truly bleeding Rush dry of his lifeblood revenues.

A note to Media Matters:

(1) Just spell his name right and identify the local broadcast station and time(s).

(2) You might include that Mr. Limbaugh was absolutely correct in connecting her habits and status with her character quality. That is not a pejorative estimate, just a statement of publicly known fact.

How long does it have to be said that Fluke did not testify before the House about anything?

True on two counts. Fluke didn't testify; she wasn't sworn. And Fluke wasn't before the a Committee of the House of Representatives; she was before the House Democratic Steering Committee.

This is because the Democrats tried to pull a fast one. The Democrats' original witness for the actual hearing was the Rev. Barry Lynn, the head of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. At 4:30 p.m. the afternoon before the hearing, the Democrats announced that they wanted Sandra Fluke instead. This violated the 72-hour-notice rule, under which one party has to give the other party at least 72 hours' notice of the identity of its witnesses, so they can be vetted.

The Republicans said "no deal, we don't have time to vet Sandra Fluke." The Democrats told Rev. Lynn not to appear.

A few days after the real hearing, the Democratic Steering Committee held the press conference/hearing for Fluke ("poor Fluke, who wasn't allowed to testify") and the media ate it up.

I'll note, however, that Fluke never said a word about her sex life, about whether she uses or has ever used contraception, or how much she pays for contraception. She told stories about other women, most of them ridiculous. For example, a woman who was raped didn't seek STD tests because she assumed that if contraception wasn't covered, post-rape STD tests wouldn't be. And for that reason, religiously-affiliated institutions should be required to provide contraception in health coverage? A married woman said she couldn't afford contraception in her budget. Fluke didn't say oral contraception, just contraception. Had the married woman heard of free condoms? States with a $9/month program for oral contraception? Planned Parenthood? Again, for this we forced religiously-affiliated institutions to provide contraception in health coverage?

But her own sex life or contraception? Fluke said nada. Rush Limbaugh made up all of the stories about Fluke talking or making claims about her own sex life. Then he called her a slut for having all of the sex that he made up.

t’s funny that most people overlooked one of the next comments Rush made in the original. The line where he said she isn’t a slut.

That was on 2/29. He said she was 'round-heeled' instead. After saying she was round-heeled, Limbaugh said something like "she's not a slut, I take it back." However, he came back again on 3/1 and used the slut term several times in reference to Fluke without taking it back that day.

'Round-heeled' would likely constitute per se defamation in the states that recognize either civil or criminal per se defamation for untrue comments demeaning a woman's sexual virtue, so I don't think that's a peg Limbaugh would want to hang his hat on. The catch is that it's unlikely there would be specific precedent; there are cases on the exact word 'slut.'

He's better off sticking with a 'limited-purpose public figure' defense and claiming that he wasn't acting with reckless indifference to the truth on 3/1 when he continued to speak as if Fluke had talked about her sex life.

Brock’s sexual orientation is not the issue. Making fun of it just lowers us to the level of the Left’s personal attack strategy. We can do better.

There is utterly no need to mention that he is a giggling little donut-puncher, or a skipping lavender-scented pillow-biter. We do not need to mention that Brock is a pearl-necklace adorned tumblebunny, nor do we need to say he is a limp-wristed prancing knob-jockey.

Never will it cross my keyboard to mention that Brock is a petal-covered swishing basket-burglar, and you will have to wait a long time to see me say that Brock is a effeminate queenie-baby genuflecting chicken licker.

No, you will never see me post that Brock is a loafer-lightening grass-tickling pounder of fudge. NEVER! No, sir, you will not see me calling Brock a stool-pushed jolly-ranching graduate of the Assmasters school of backseat driving.

No sir. We are better than that.

Slut. There. I said it, too. She's a slut. A slut who's so slutty, irresponsible and incapable of keeping her legs closed for any length of time that she demands her federal government pony-up other peoples money to pay for all the birth control she requires,(though her haircut ought to be all the birth control she needs). Birth control pills, condoms, gels, foams, IUD’s, morning after pills and doctors with wet’n’dry vacs as back-up in case all those fail. Her medicine cabinet must be out in the garage where the Prius should be parked. The good news is this slut has likely damaged herself to the point where she can no longer procreate. Yea Darwin!-Wb

That might make you feel good, but it doesn't add anything to the discussion.

If she were a "slut" she'd buy her own birth control or go to a school or get insurance that provided it for her, like other people, and we wouldn't be talking about her.

Fluke's an ideologue, a "cause person" who wants the government to override the schools remaining religious scruple and that's the problem.

No, but Mark, Ed and SGT Sam had two other articles I have missed on FR. One was about a teacher in some NE city who divided his class into four groups and gave them assignments to find weaknesses in each (R) candidate. They were to come up with ways to defeat each candidate. Their findings were to be sent to the 0 dumber reelection team. This was back in January.

The other article was about a TEA Party Marine SGT who is getting demoted and will be booted out of the corp. He started a facebook page and said he would defend the Constitution and never obey a unlawful order. Needless to say, I was PO'ed.

As a woman, this thin-skin/pc nonsense is crazy. Guess SNL would have to scrap the Dan Akroyd “point/counter point” sketch that made “Jane, you ignorant slut” a common joke back in the day.

I find the “c” word that Lefties Bill Mahr and Ed Schultz have used far more offensive.

Where is the outcry about the ABC series “GCB” which means Good Christian Bitches? Or how about the billboard for the new ABC show “Apt 23” that has the words “Don’t trust the
B___ in Apt 23”.

As a woman, this thin-skin/pc nonsense is crazy.

Agreed, but there's a lot of thin-skinned-ness going around here whenever a liberal windbag media type or comic talks about a strong conservative woman, you must admit. Not just the 'c' word. There was a lot of uproar when Laura Ingraham was called a slut (I was offended).

But you're right that some of it is PC nonsense. For that reason, many states have dropped disparaging a woman's sexual virtue from the list of statements that constitute defamation per se. In some of the states where there are cases on the books stating that 'slut' is defamation per se as a matter of law, it would be interesting to see whether an appellate court addressing the issue today would follow precedent or determine that times have changed and the existing law no longer is relevant. The Georgia Court of Appeals addressed it quite recently and held that 'slut' was still defamation per se in Georgia.

Florida's a weird situation. On the civil side, courts no longer treat impugning a woman's virtue as per se defamation, but an ancient statute still makes it criminal defamation per se

As for Dan Akroyd, it was clear that it was a skit and a joke. No defamation. When people repeated the catch-phrase, it was clear it was a joke.

I, too, find the 'c' word much more offensive.

Implying something, like GCB . . . well, to which particular GCB is it directed? And what does it imply that's defamatory?

Of Limbaugh's comments, 'slut' is the one that got the attention, but it wasn't the one that worried Limbaugh's attorneys, the way I put the pieces together. 'Slut' is arguably an opinion (although Limbaugh was basing that opinion on the amount of sex Fluke was supposedly having, and Fluke never talked about that - Limbaugh made all of that up).

When I wrote my ill-advised vanity about the ins-and-outs of a defamation lawsuit, I pointed out one statement of Limbaugh's in which he said that Fluke had admitted being immoral and base, and more. That's not opinion and Limbaugh was basing it on words he put in Fluke's mouth.

Limbaugh's staff deleted that statement from the 2/29 show transcript several days later - the day before the then-edited transcripts for 2/29 and 3/1 were removed from his website. He kept in the 'slut' comments from 2/29 and 3/1. Those either didn't bother his attorneys or (more likely) were already too infamous to remove. But they surgically removed the part most troublesome to an attorney (and to this attorney), even if they if it wasn't the one that cause the lefties to put their hands in the air and scream.
