Rick Santorum's latest attempt to use a Mitt Romney aide's "Etch-A-Sketch" remark against the Republican front-runner instead gave his rival a chance to fire back on Thursday, after Santorum seemed to say he'd rather see President Obama reelected than send Romney to the White House.
Speaking at an event in Texas, Santorum again made the case that Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom's comments Wednesday on CNN about a "reset" of the campaign if Romney clinched the nomination showed the former Massachusetts governor's efforts to appeal to conservatives were insincere.
"You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who's just going to be a little different than the person in there," Santorum told a crowd in San Antonio, according to NBC News. "If you're going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk with what may be the Etch-A-Sketch candidate of the future."

Santorum is going for the conservative vote; Gingrich and Romney are going for the Republican vote.
You are exactly right, Mr. Buzzard, thanks for being exactly right.
Not more of the GOP convention rule 40. That has already been disproved.

None of 'em.
Wouldn't matter anyway. They're true believers. Zealots for the most part.
And I understand that. I have been a zealot for various candidates over the decades.
I have been emotionally crushed several times.
I don't hold it against them. One day we will ALL be allies against the Fascists.
Are you sure they were gaffs?
Looks like you mixed up Gingrich and Santorum. Besides, Santorum thinks Obama is a better pick than Romney. Santorum is going for the delusional Vote.
I’m quite clear......not sure about everyone else.
I have no doubt that Newt is a primary loser.
I also have no doubt that is because the LEADERS of the SoCons have endorsed Santorum, the idiot.
The Lemmings will do as they are told. That is because they are incapable of thinking.
I am not stupid. I know Gingrich will not win. I also know Santorum will not win.
I also know that Obama must be defeated at all costs.
Incorrect.
Gaff, Miss speaks, Open mouth insert foot.
Take your pick.
If he said that...he isnt worth a tinkers dam. His investment in the presidency is more for his own vanity than for the good of the nation.
You are right! And Santorum did say it. He rather see Obama re-elected than see Romney elected because Romney flip flops like “Etch-A-Sketch” and we know what Obama will do.
Romney, Newt, and even Paul have been saying that any of the Republican candidates would be better than Obama. For Santorum to say what he did just shows that he only cares about winning. And he certainly is NOT who we need as our nominee! I also have heard from a number of folks from PA who say they doubt Santorum will carry PA.
I hope Newt is our nominee, but of course I will vote for whomever our nominee is against Obama!
There are a lot of different factors in play here. If Romney becomes the nominee and miraculously wins the general—and it will take a miracle, given his lack of scruples, charisma, and relatability—Republican voters will most likely be deenergized going into the midterms and Democrats amped up. (Barring a cataclysm such as the 9/11 attacks, and even in such an event Willard would not prove an inspiring leader.) So we have to ask: is it likely Romney would be a bold conservative willing to stand up to a Democrat Congress? Are you kidding? And predictably, large numbers of congressional Republicans would vote for liberal proposals out of loyalty to a liberal Republican president, whereas they’d oppose such things if proposed by a Dem.
For my own part, I hope that if Romney’s nominated, a solid and credible conservative throws his hat in the ring as a third party candidate. That would bring out conservative voters who’d likely stay home otherwise, and would increase Republicans’ chances of holding the House and perhaps taking the Senate.
Sorry, but I just won’t vote for Romney. Not under any circumstances. Those who would vote for him would probably vote for Hillary Clinton if she deigned to accept the Republican nomination.
Looks like you mixed up Gingrich and Santorum.
***Nope. He’s making a distinction. I’m not certain it’s a wise distinction, but he’s making it.
Who would you vote for if it’s Obama vs. Romney?
No.
Santorum is for the SOCIAL CONSERVATIVE vote. That's not the conservative vote. Many of us believe that anyone who would use the FEDERAL government to compel their way way of thinking are anti-conservative whether that be Santorum or Obama.
I gather I should have pinged you also.
Looks like you mixed up Gingrich and Santorum.
***Nope. Hes making a distinction. Im not certain its a wise distinction, but hes making it.
Who would you vote for if its Obama vs. Romney?
Oh well. ABC News says rule 40 is BS even though they don’t show where in the rules their scenario is possible. Bleh.
Keep reading same article.
Santorum said he speaks with Texas Gov. Rick Perry before scheduled campaign stops in the state. Perry sought the GOP nomination but left the race in January and endorsed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
Sound like he is implying that Perry is no longer backing Newt. Just how low will this SoCon stoop to be the next Pres.
Once again a horrible set of choices provided to us.
Romney - when asked if he will repeal Obama care responds “Why wouldn’t I?”
Santorum - a Catholic version of Mike Bloomberg
Paul - regrettably, despite some good positions, strikes me as a flake.
I’ll take Newt, because these are the choices.
Feel free to sell out any shred of principles you may have and back Romney. I refuse to roll over for the GOPe anymore.
I met Obama in 2005 have to repeat this in every post. Got to spend 10 min one on one chatting at a PR event for GWB at the Caterpillar factory in Montgomery IL
Mind you this was Summer 2005, I called my mother and told her I met and got the autograph of the next POTUS. I was right, and I'll tell you if Rick thinks Romney is worse than Obama he didn't spend enough time in Illinois.
Obama would stab you in your neck and give you a smile, most evil person I met.
Santorum is right. Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.
Romney is going to need a REAL PIT VIPER to fight back against the blizzard of hate that is going to be unleashed this fall.
Few people, including most FREEPERS, Im afraid, havent been paying attention to the size, scope, reach, and FUNDING of the huge propaganda mill, with a complicit mainstream media, that the Obama campaign has been building.
I have, and frankly, it scares the hell out of me.
The Tom Hanks Triumph Of The Will Obama campaign movie is only the beginning.
Well, I don't underestimate the leviathan they have built and are building, and I worry about it everyday. But I don't know the answer to this question: Could Newt, after what Romney did to him, and what Romney did to him was vile, could Newt forgive him and get on board?
No. Santorum is for the SOCIAL CONSERVATIVE vote.
***A reasonable enough point.
That’s not the conservative vote.
***Sure it is. If you can’t count on the candidate’s social conservative positions, you cannot count on their fiscal conservative positions.
Many of us believe that anyone who would use the FEDERAL government to compel their way way of thinking
***Straw argument. Santorum wouldn’t be strong enough to use the fedguv to compel his way of thinking, and he probably doesn’t seek to do so at any rate.
are anti-conservative whether that be Santorum or Obama.
***Other than the fact that Santorum is on the right moral path and Obama isn’t, your reasoning is delightfully interesting, although it’s fallacious.
That’s good thinking. I made a similar case in this post here. Conservative Republicans seem to have an INCREDIBLY difficult time thinking even a little bit long-term when it comes to strategy. The liberal wing of the GOP are the political experts who are leading the conservative wing to slaughter with this bought and paid for Romney candidacy.

Study the Russian Revolution or Communism in the 20th Century. If you want mountains of skulls and dictators? Vote Obama!!! If you want to throw a bull fit well vote for dictatorship.
I voted Tuesday, I voted for Santorum, but if you think I'll vote for Barack Obama in November, you are mistaken.
If you met B.O. and spent 10 minutes chatting and have an autograph ticket with the date to prove it then please, debate me and I'll tell you why B.O. is a monster.
Otherwise, you may as well just be another employee of Obama, Media Matters, ACORN or MoveOn....
-> Santorum is going for the conservative vote; Gingrich and Romney are going for the Republican vote.
He just energized Obama’s base.
Bravo. The Hillary example is one I've been using for a while. The question Republicans need to ask themselves is how far is too far? How liberal does the Republican candidate have to be before you will NOT vote for them? I'd say that a candidate who is a proven serial liar and who, as governor, promoted abortion, gay marriage, socialized medicine, higher taxes, etc. IS GOING TOO FAR. People have to realize the President is the leader of the party. Where he goes, everyone else will follow. The party members, the elected officials, the voters, everyone. The Republican party as we know it might cease to exist if Romney becomes President.
romney, I would love to be spared that particular choice, but romney. ugh.
That post is absolutely correct. If Romney is the nominee, it’s in conservatives’ best interests to let Barry have a pyrrhic victory. He might win the battle, but him and the libs will most definitely lose the war.
Your Obama piling on 5 trillion in debt not good enough for you? maybe you would enjoy the 15 trillion more of Obama debt?
Obama is crushing America under a mountain of debt, a sea of socialism, an Ocean of China products , marxist supreme court justices, hundreds of liberal judges, a horde of illegals and a thousand other crimes . it will only increase this in its second term.
Do you people understand that the U.S. will collapse under this mountain of 5 trillion and growing of Obama debt , do you ?
It ain't going to be any better under Romney.
We've heard this a hundred times already in this campaign. Don't you and naps and the rest of your little clicque ever get tired of walking his crap back?
Look: If Santorum can't articulate what he means in plain English, it is probably because he doesn't know what he means. Unless he has severe dyslexia.
Either way, his credibility is shot, except among the disciples.
I’m afraid I can no longer vote for a RINO. I’ll vote straight-ticket Republican, though. Just that, at the top, I’ll write in my favorite, whether it be Palin or Santorum.
Santorum has said many times during the debate that anyone of the Republican pics would be better than Obama. The hypocrisy is rich. Santorum is compared to a big government spender, and Romney and Gingrich who supported the individual mandate, endorsed global warming and cap and trade are viewed as conservatives. It is on THESE issues that Santorum has called Romney on the mat and states that there isn’t much to choose between Obama, and the rest of the field.
You have to remember Bush, Sr. fired everybody in the Reagan White House after he was elected. Romney will not be asking Newt to work with him. Romney is the bluest of the blue blood Republicans. A grass-roots conservative reformer of middle class origin like Newt is anathema to him. There is nothing in Romney’s real agenda that has anything in common with Newt’s. It’s more likely they’d be in direct conflict with each other.
He just energized Obamas base.
***Wrong. It was one of Romney’s advisors who came up with the Etch-a-Sketch remark. It has energized the ABR base, and notably the Santorum crowd more than the Gingrich crowd.
Newts got my vote Sat.
At this point, there’s about a 99% possibility RMoney is going to be the nominee. So 2012 is going to be a liberal vs. a liberal. Sure, Slick Willard might be a little less offensive of a liberal than Hussein, but at the end of the day he’s still a liberal. So if hypothetically conservatives try to drag him across the finish line, we’ll have a liberal for 4 years. Then in 2016, the Dems will obviously nominate another liberal, so it would be liberal vs. liberal AGAIN.
I’d rather have a liberal now and get a true conservative in 2016 then two liberals in a row, even if they do have an (R) next to their name!
I believe that if Jimmy Carter wasn’t such a disaster, we never would have gotten Reagan.....and I believe we have the closest thing to Reagan, in the form of Scott Walker.
It might a toss-up, but I see more to lose over the next 8 to 16 years if Romney wins than if Obama wins. I would never add to Obama’s mandate by voting for him but I may write in Newt. I’m definitely going to see if Obamacare is overturned by the Supreme Court first. If it is not, then it makes harder not to vote for Romney in the hopes that he will at least follow through on overturning that or be pushed there by the Congress. That is the issue that can do the most damage to the country if it’s allowed to stay in place another 4 years. If it is overturned, then gridlock might be tolerable and we might be able to repair most of the other damage done by winning with a conservative in 2016.
What Santorum did tonight, has given Obama’s base and operatives so much gold. They are energized as well.
I know it is monster, as it is and as most democrats especially those in the media are.
Obama’s greatest hits:
Usurping the Constitution, Using the EPA , FCC etc to bypass congress, Censoring the Internet with ACTA.
Not to mention increasing government size and power, and exploding debt by 5 trillion $ so that will ensure a U.S. collapse. A country must collapse under a sea of debt this traitor has burdened us with.
Also it has let in illegals , sent our factories to china, and a million other crimes. It hates America and wants America destroyed so it lets in illegals and has it's "free trade" to destroy the U.S. border.Obama will only increase this in its 2nd term.
He did NOT say he was going to vote for Obama. That’s an out and out lie.
You enjoying your Obama $5 gas, 5 trillion in debt it piled on us ,illegals it let in etc? you do realize that money has to be paid back so we are living in the matrix now built on debt not reality? Keep campaigning for Obama the more you do the more it makes want to vote against Obama.
sure Oracle. Nobody could be worse than Obama , or what it has done to America.Obama will increase his attacks on America because it knows it won’t have to face another election.Obama will destroy the U.S. because it won’t be facing reelection.
So, how do we know who is energized and who isn’t? I have no idea how to check if zer0bama’s base is energized, and I’d need to take a shower afterwards if I did know.
