Coleman 'optimistic' of Senate repealing death penalty (CT)

A bill repealing the death penalty cleared the Judiciary Committee on a 24-19 vote Wednesday night and was headed to the Senate, where a proponent, Sen. Eric D. Coleman, D-Bloomfield, said he was "very optimistic" about winning passage.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is committed to signing a repeal bill similar to one vetoed by Gov. M. Jodi Rell in 2009 after it squeaked through the Senate on a 19-17 vote. With eight new senators, a vote in the Senate again is projected to be close.

The governor discounted the impact of a new Quinnipiac University poll that found Connecticut voters objecting to repeal by a 2-1 ratio.

"I think everyone should be guided by their own conscience in matters such as this," Malloy said. "If we had polled civil rights in 1962, we still would be under Jim Crow laws."

To pass the bill, proponents appear to need the votes of two of three publicly uncommitted Democratic senators: Edith Prague of Columbia, Carlo Leone of Stamford and Joseph Crisco of Woodbridge.

"I'm very optimistic and very hopeful," said Coleman, the co-chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

...

Should he only manage an 18-18 tie in the Senate, Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman is prepared to cast the deciding vote in favor of repeal as the presiding officer of the Senate.

I have no problem with repealing the Death Penalty, as long as the murders, rapists, etc, are required to live in the homes of the people who vote to repeal it and any activists.

Oh, and since they hate guns, they don’t get any for protection from the live in rapists, murderers, etc. If a problems arises, they can call 911 and hope the Police show up in time.

I would think after the attack on the dentist’s family (Petit?) this sort of thing wouldn’t have much support.

Of course. What would the mere unwashed peasants know compared to the enlightened elite?

State Sen. Suzio should be an effective counter to this movement. His district includes Cheshire, CT, where that horrific murder/rape/arson took place. Even modern Connecticutians, with their deadened sensibilities, wanted at least death for the perps.

This law is not a repeal of the Death Penalty. It only allows convicted murderers and rapists live. It does nothing to stop the death penalty of unwanted innocent babies..

Sen. Eric D. Coleman, D-Bloomfield,

These Liberal elitists have zero regard for the people of Connecticut. The fact that the people oppose this measure to repeal the death penalty by a vast majority means nothing. The will of the people is dismissed by Gov. “Doofus” Malloy with the wave of his hand and a comparison to Jim Crow laws. What arrogance!

Look into the faces of the surviving family members who lost loved ones to murderers and say such flippant things! They are such cowards. None of them dared to suggest repeal while the brutal Cheshire killers of the Petits awaited their fates. If anyone deserved death, surely it was Komisarjevsky and Hayes. Sparing either of them would have cost Malloy and his minions votes.

The hand-wringing libs are still sad that Michael Ross was finally executed for his serial murder of at least eight young women. They were holding candlelight vigils for an umpteenth stay even though Ross requested sentence be carried out. They were embarrassed that CT citizens were still “so primitive” as to permanently rid society of vicious predators. Do-gooder, condescending, sniveling, lefty liberals make me want to puke.

Connecticut started becoming a screwball state in the late 1950’s.

If my ship ever comes in, I’m outa here.

They might as well

With unlimited appeals the only execution since 1960 was Michael Ross and he gave up his appeals asked for his sentence to be carried out.

Connecticut started becoming a screwball state in the late 1950’s.

But after Lower (our income) WACKY (aka: Lowell P. Weicker; The thief who helped Karmonos steal the Whale) put in an income tax, Connecticut lost control of its spending. Of course Rowland and Rell didn't exactly act like Reagan when it came to controlling spending. Now Dan Mallony is acting like a bank robber in a bank's safe.)

The last good CT governor was Ella Grasso (her husband was my principal.) and William O'Neil was good too.

If my ship ever comes in, I’m outa here.

My ship was the Contra Concordia. :)
