County hopes public opinion of firefighters improves before tax vote

Clark County and its firefighters union have frequently clashed in recent years.

They’ve fought over firefighters’ compensation packages, which averaged $189,000 in fiscal year 2010; alleged abuse of sick leave, which some county officials said was used to boost overtime and retirement pay; and whether firefighters should be allowed to do charitable work while on the clock.

The last round of contract negotiations between the two sides broke down and an independent arbitrator had to sort things out.

The biggest fight yet for both sides, however — one that county administrators are starting to prepare for — will likely make partners of these foes.

In 2014, Clark County voters will be asked whether to end or extend a special property tax that since 1996 has helped fund the Fire Department. Voters agreed in 1995 to tax themselves at 5.27 cents per $100 of assessed property value for 20 years.

If you wonder why no one's commented [till now], it's probably because you didn't give us your reason for posting this. A guy in, say, Western New York State (me, for example) doesn't have any information to go on and depends on his fellow FReeper for background.

In other words, WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT!

“In other words, WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT! “

I’ll comment!!! The reason that this is important is that fire fighters al over the country have been screwing the taxpayers for years! If you think that this is a problem that’s particular to Clark County, Nevada, you had better take a look at what the “public service” employees in your county and/or city are taking home. The situation here in Contra Costa County, California mirrors what’s written about Clark County in the article. Why is this important? Why indeed, unless you yourself are a PE Union member.

I worked as a paid professional Firefighter for 25 years and never took home that kind of money.

That was 20 years ago but even as an officer I never got paid over $45,000 a year

$189,000 unbelievable

Oh, trust me. I'm not. I understand your point and I agree fully. I just wish posters would put something in the first comment explaining why they posted the article and/or why they think it might matter.

When I post something about Buffalo, I don't expect that most FReepers will know anything about the city or its local politics. That's all.

What you wrote to me would have been perfect.
