Santorum on defensive as race turns to Louisiana

Facing heightened pressure to revive his presidential bid, Rick Santorum was forced to explain another apparent misstep as he courted Louisiana voters Friday, the eve of a critical contest in a Republican nomination battle that increasingly favors Mitt Romney.

Santorum said he would support the eventual GOP nominee - if it isn't him - despite what he insists are similarities between front-runner Romney and President Barack Obama that make them indistinguishable on some issues. He caused an intraparty uproar earlier in the week after suggesting he'd prefer a second term for Obama over a Romney presidency.

"I've said repeatedly and will continue to say, I'll vote for whoever the Republican nominee is and I will work for him," Santorum said as he walked back his original comments less than 24 hours before Louisiana polls were set to open. "Barack Obama is a disaster, but we can't have someone who agrees with him on some of the biggest issues of the day."

The situation underscored Santorum's challenges ahead of a Louisiana contest he's favored to win. Santorum has had success in the South, having won last week's contests in Alabama and Mississippi. Regardless of the outcome Saturday, however, Romney will have collected more delegates than his opponents combined as the race then turns to more favorable territory in the coming weeks.

Santorum's continued missteps are complicating a candidacy already struggling to overcome major financial and organizational deficiencies. Before losing this week's Illinois primary, Santorum hurt himself by declaring that neither the economy nor the nation's unemployment rate was his top concern.

"I think the biggest development of the last 24 hours was Sen. Santorum's remarkable mistake in suggesting that re-electing President Obama was acceptable under any circumstance," Republican contender Newt Gingrich told reporters in Port Fourchon, La. (snip)

Louisiana offers a total of 46 delegates, but only 20 will be up for grabs in Saturday's primary. An additional 23 will be selected at the party's state convention in June and three others go to the state's Republican National Committee members.

And while Santorum tried to recover from one misstep, a supporter in the audience added an off-message wrinkle. As he fired the pistol, a woman in the crowd shouted: "Pretend it's Obama."

Santorum’s original comment made perfect sense: If the GOP offers a candidate very similar to the incumbent, people will stick with the known quantity. I also think that is exactly what is going to happen.

What was Rick doing at a range with a crowd? Is he touched?

Hey Rick, going to the range isn't a game show.

Only 20 delegates are up for grabs, but just watch the Santorum fanatics proclaim his 10 or 11 delegate “victory” as “stunning, amazing, pnenomenal!”, which will cause them to celebrate one of many, great victories that have assured that he will be elected President, in spite of reality.

If Santorum wins Looosiana Mittbot Psycho Freak may have to admit that maybe-perhaps-well it could be-the moon is bloo-I’m stuck on stupid—that all his compulsive obsessive Santorum loathing was in vain--but I doubt it.

Those of us who think from a realistic perspective, fully understand how Santorum’s original comment made perfect sense to you.....(Notice your subliminal use of the word “Perfect”)

Now, back to the real world again!

Santo is grandstanding again, trying to get the NRA loyals to identify for him. It was a typical Santorum photo op (Iowa Pheasant hunt, not for his pure love of the sport, but a pathetic display for political gain.)

LOL! Name calling children like yourself are always quick to pick a fight or shout insults when they are outclassed. Only problem is, I don’t play with children, so you will have to find someone else who is more on your level of juvenile proclivity.

If somebody held a gun to your head and said to either choose Rick, Mitt or Obama what would you say?

Because that is the real world as of now. Newt is dead as dead.

Don't give me sophistry just a choice, a straight answer to a revealing-for you- hypothetical IF you have the guts to stray from your usual contemptuous disingenuous nature.

Look who’s calling the kettle black?

But really, you are getting desperate, like your candidate.

I support Newt, and you know that, so stop making extreme extrapolations from your limited perspective. Like I said earlier, I don’t argue with children.

I said no sophistry.

Even Spock's idiot bastard son knows how weak you are on logic—only Santorum can stop Mitt so ipso facto your deranged Rick hate makes you a Romney running dog.

BAM!!! That's reality smacking you upside the head FRiend!!!

More Lamestream lies from PSYCHO-FREEP.

Santorum did not say that he would vote for Obama, or any of the other twists that the left has been putting on this.

What he said is that Mitt Romney is not a satisfactory ALTERNATIVE to Obama, because he has many of the same faults. They are both lying socialists. That was perfectly correct. Pushing Romney gives us no real choice. It’s a Stalinist Communist vs. a Leninist Communist, with both of them more than happy to kill babies, push gay marriage, nationalize healthcare, and spend like there’s no tomorrow.

You say that you are bashing Santorum because you prefer Newt. But the purpose of the left wing press and the RINO establishment is to nominate Romney, not Newt, and that is what you are helping them do, whether you realize it or not.

If Romney is nominated, I will not vote for him, and neither will a lot of other people. But if enough lies are spread about Santorum at this critical juncture, then Romney is going to be nominated. Why do you think Drudge and the GOP/e are all pushing this story?
