TODAY I CHOOSE TO SUCCEED!

I am here because of prior choices I have made.
My thoughts control my actions.
My actions determine my destiny.
My destiny is controlled by my choices.

Today I choose to...

Live my life with honor, courage and commitment,
• Follow the rules and do my best in all my endeavors,
• Perform like a mature and professional military person,
• Be honest with myself and not make excuses for my actions
• Admit when I’m wrong and be held accountable
• Maintain a positive attitude.

I am who I am and where I am because of my choices. Today I choose to succeed!

Prayer: Dear God, I pray that you will be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Help me always to choose the path which honors You, my family and my country. Amen.

Franz Schubert set Psalm 23 to music, and it has been a standard in the German sacred repertory for nearly two centuries. It never caught on outside of the German-speaking world because the words of Luther’s Bible don’t scan well in English.

Schubert set it for women’s chorus in the key of A-flat Major. He writes the piano accompaniment as though it were for a harp, and the women are intended to be angels.

Schubert: Psalm 23

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

The Mozart Requiem is one of the greatest artifacts of Western Civilization. He never finished the work, and students and researchers have come up with various performing editions in the centuries after its composition. You know from the opening bars that this is something special.

At 4:41 Mozart launches into the Kyrie, which he sets as a fugue. This is logical because of the repetitive nature of the Greek words. But this is Mozart wearing his Size 15 Triple-E boots, and no composer of requiems ever set the Kyrie as a fugue after this!

At the end, Mozart finishes it with a D chord with an open fifth (D-A-D). Normally this is used to indicate tonal ambiguity, because the F or F# in the middle determines whether you are in the major or minor mode. But that’s not why Mozart uses it. The open fifth configuration is here used to describe spaciousness. Usually it is spaciousness above, but – and I’ve never figured out how Mozart did this – here it describes the spaciousness below. For the length of that final chord and its decay in the space of the hall or church, Mozart gives us a look into the abyss. It’s absolutely hair-raising.

Mozart: Requiem, Introit and Kyrie

A very full day. Saturday is now an 8 hour day.
But at least I have Sundays off now.

Some of my students are just too young. People have some unrealistic expectations sometimes. (sigh) I am torn between telling the moms this unpleasant fact, or being quiet and being a VERY expensive babysitter. Eek!

WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. "

Our Founding Fathers brought this essential freedom into existence through great adversity. It is under attack now more than at any other time during our lives. We are called on to uphold and defend it, whatever the cost!

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.

May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.

May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.

G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

PRAYERS GOING UP FOR OUR AMERICAN HEROES AND FOR OUR BELOVED NATION!

GEORGE WASHINGTON RECEIVES VISION OF AMERICA'S FUTURE FROM ANGELIC MESSENGER.

In the coldest and darkest days of the American Revolution, General George Washington raised his prayers for the survival of his beleaguered Army and of the new Nation. The Lord answered those prayers, upheld his Army through a punishing nadir to everlasting glory and bestowed His manifold benefits upon the new Nation.

In like manner, let our prayers now rise for our heroes in the American military who seek to secure the benefits of Freedom on behalf of a people hungry for them. Father, look on our prayers for them with favor, guide their steps in righteousness and keep them in the shelter of Your Healing Wings. Bless and uphold them in the performance of their Mission. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, Amen.

SHADOWS AT ARLINGTON

Heavenly Father, Lord of the Nations, unto Your Divine Mercy we commend the souls of these who have fallen in the service of our Beloved Nation and in defense of the freedoms we hold dear. We pray that You gather them in Your loving embrace, that You cause Your countenance to shine upon them and that You vouchsafe their souls to dwell eternally in Your Divine Presence. Through Your Son, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.

As part of the Catholic Benediction service, the standard Latin hymn is a rather insipid version of ”Tantum ergo”, a poem by Thomas Aquinas. Schubert set it to music in the last months of his life for orchestra and chorus. It’s way better than what one hears in church these days.

At 1:41 there is a breathtaking key change, and the melisma at 2:01 breaks your heart.

Schubert: “Tantum Ergo”, D. 962

Such a beautiful post! Needed Patrick Henry’s “give me liberty or give me death” today! :)

We have reached that point of crisis again.....

The Schubert version is so much better than the traditional insipid hymn in current use. It’s a keeper.

It’s beautiful. Maybe you should tell the Pope to get a clue. :)
