Cheating our children: Suspicious school test scores across the nation
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | March 25, 2012 | Heather Vogell, John Perry and Alan Judd and M.B. Pell

Suspicious test scores in roughly 200 school districts resemble those that entangled Atlanta in the biggest cheating scandal in American history, an investigation by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows.

The newspaper analyzed test results for 69,000 public schools and found high concentrations of suspect math or reading scores in school systems from coast to coast. The findings represent an unprecedented examination of the integrity of school testing.

The analysis doesn’t prove cheating. But it reveals that test scores in hundreds of cities followed a pattern that, in Atlanta, indicated cheating in multiple schools.

A tainted and largely unpoliced universe of untrustworthy test results underlies bold changes in education policy, the findings show. The tougher teacher evaluations many states are rolling out, for instance, place more weight than ever on tests.

Perhaps more important, the analysis suggests a broad betrayal of schoolchildren across the nation. As Atlanta learned after cheating was uncovered in half its elementary and middle schools last year, falsified test results deny struggling students access to extra help to which they are entitled, and erode confidence in a vital public institution.

“These findings are concerning,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in an emailed statement after being briefed on the AJC’s analysis.

The Federal government has no business interfering in education.

So why allow it?

Sure, Elsie. I guess you’re gonna give me a job that pays the same, has the same benefits, the same pension, etc. that I’ve labored toward for nearly 20 years. That’s really nice of you, I must say.

If you don’t have a comparable job for me that I also love, then SHUT THE HELL UP, CRONE.

ALL the teachers around here are scared stiff for their jobs. The Little Dictator Bloombutt is closing schools left and right, instructing principals to harass over-50 teachers so that they will quit and they won’t have to pay their higher salaries, and pushing toward teacher evaluations that NO ONE could fulfill unless you’re in one of the few very elite schools. So if I have no backbone (which is a genuine LAFF), then neither do the thousands of other teachers caught in this Sophies Choice situation.

Socialism is like a poisonous snake.

Fundamentally, when people willingly choose to play with government collectivist schools ( which are the very definition of a socialist-entitlement snakes) they shouldn't be surprised that they get bitten.

In far too many government schools far too many teachers are faced with a “Sophie's Choice”: be dishonest or be fired. In other words, sell one’s soul to the socialist snake or get bitten.

At first Obamacare won't be that bad due to the professionalism and culture of honesty of those trained in the old system. In time, though, health care workers will be forced to make “Sophie's Choices” but the consequences won't be fake grades or cheating on standardized exams. The choices will literally mean life and death for those forced into the socialist snake's health care system.

I sure as heck did not vote for the current Socialist politicians who are responsible for this nightmare. That was the product of the liberal idiots who take the leftist media at their word uncritically. But I am suffering under their policies, as are thousands of other teachers. In my own classroom, I still stand up for moral behavior (e.g., I pull grappling boys and girls apart, I advocate modest dressing and march up and down aisles during test to forestall copying).

If I am to SURVIVE to fight another day—vote out these amoral liberal filth—I have to continue to support myself and my family. I hate having to pass kids who don’t deserve it, especially knowing that they KNOW you have to pass them and therefore they don’t have to do much in the way of work.

It’s SICK, it’s anxiety causing, and it’s directly a result of liberal politicians deciding in their ego mania that THEY know best, even about subjects about which they are ignorant. Education run as a business, never mind the kids. Kids are NOT widgets!

You're admitting that you have let this cancer eat away at our Country for twenty years, and then you want to get the same BENEFITS that you do now??

Just cruise on in to your retirement and forget the consequences.

Nice try.

Just who DID you 'vote' for?

The following applies to all government schools and is a **general*** comment about the entire institution of government school teaching:

Did you read anything beyond my first sentence? Here is is again:

Government schools are **collectivism**. They are the very definition of a compulsory funded, compulsory-use, single-payer SOCIALISM! They have **always** been this way! They are build on a rotten foundation of socialism.

So?....When teachers play with a socialist snake they should not be surprised that the snake bites them. In this case, ( there are many examples) it is lie, hand out false grades, cheat on tests, or get fired.

ALL government teachers, whether they chose to play with the government school socialist snake 50 years ago or yesterday, **knowingly** chose to play with that snake!

At first Obama care won't be that bad due to the values of those trained in the old system, but in a generation or two that is when we will see the true horror of socialized medicine. And...Every argument used to defend government schooling or reform it will be trotted out for Obamacare. Bet on it! Unfortunately, it will then be a life and death matter, not a question of a fake grade.

It is the inevitable result of all socialist-entitlement programs. Socialism always results in people being treated like widgets.

And...All the problems we see in the government schools will happen in Obamacare but the consequences will not be a fake grade or cheating on a test. It will mean life or death for the "widget".

Personally, I consider government collectivist schooling to be soooooo evil, so harmful to the children, and such a serious threat to our nation's continuing freedom, that I have made a personal decision.

I will no longer have a government teacher for a friend. They are either too stupid, to evil, or too much of a Useful Idiot to be my friend. I wouldn't have an abortion worker for a friend either.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself) The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

if these truant kids were forced to attend that the overall scores of the entire class would drop dramatically

I agree. But as long as state aid is dependent on how many kids showed up each day, they'll keep trying to drag 'em in. And to think, if Obamacare isn't overturned, we'll be fighting the same battles over it as we do over the public schools. Forever and ever and . . .
