Elderly dying due to 'despicable age discrimination in NHS'
Telegraph UK ^ | 3/25/12 | Rebecca Smith, Medical Editor

Posted on 03/25/2012 8:15:33 PM PDT by Nachum

Thousands of elderly people are dying unnecessarily early because ‘despicable’ age discrimination in the NHS is denying them treatment for cancer, a charity has warned.

A lack of treatment or insufficient treatment is contributing to 14,000 deaths a year in people over the age of 75, Macmillan Cancer Support has found, in what it called an ‘unacceptable act of discrimination’.

Deaths from cancer are reducing in most age groups but at a slower rate in those aged 74 to 84 and are increasing in people aged 85 and over, the report said.

The report, The Age Old Excuse: the under treatment of older cancer patients, said treatment options are too often recommended on the basis of age rather than how fit the patient is.

Professor Riccardo Audisio, Consultant Surgical Oncologist at St Helens Hospital, said: “It is despicable to neglect, not to offer, not to even go near to the best treatment option only on the simple basis of the patient’s age.

“This has been a horrible mistake that, particularly in the UK, we have suffered from.”

What do you think they'll do to us when we get that age?

Assuming any of us can live to be elderly under obamacare, those who will care for us will understand it was we, our generation, who gave them the massive debt and all powerful government they'll struggle under for their entire lives.

...just so we could have our "free" healthcare.

Can you feel the love?

Do any of them have cancer?

My wife has had some cysts removed and my mother in law has Alzheimer's. That's about the worst. But if they did have cancer they would get treated for it. Like I stated earlier, they live (or, in the case of my wife, lived) in a nice area.

Now on the other hand my wife's best friend's husband, who lived in North Carolina, died after being taken off of the liver transplant list because he couldn't afford to make the 140 mile round trip every day to a gym they wanted him to go to so he could get to the weight that they wanted him to be at. So if you don't think death panels exist in the USA and have existed for a long time you're wearing blinders.

“But, do you want to also make the decision for me and my neighbors?”

Absolutely not——it is a very personal decision. Sorry if my post implied otherwise.

“Another nail in the coffin of the UK which is leading the West into the abyss of destruction.

Time to nuke the island from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

And some UK FReepers (or Anglophilic FReepers) wonder why I have such an antipathy for the UK. If they can’t figure it out by this article then you know the place is doomed to Third World, New Dark Age status!”

All I can figure out from your outbursts are that you’re strong in knee-jerk and a little slower in the thinking department.

In the US patients needing such medicines have one option - pay for it themselves. In the UK we have two options - see if the NHS will provide it or pay for it ourselves.

Most of us poor Brits who you want to nuke have both NHS and private medical cover (which comes free with most decent jobs over here). The people who have to rely solely on the NHS tend to be the poor or those who choose not to provide for their own future, just like the people in the US who have no medical cover at all.

You need to spend a little more time finding out the reality of the situation and a little less time hating on the basis of what the MSM tell you.

This will happen here, too, when the Medicare money really starts running out.

But it will be done differently.

Here, we'll tell Medicare patients that they have the right to cancer treatment.

BUT, the reimbursement for physicians and hospitals will be ratcheted so low that cancer clinics will one by one be closed down, and replaced by new freestanding facilities that see privately insured patients only.

In this way, the government portrays itself as the good guy and can point the finger of blame at providers.

Think it won't happen? It's been happening for a decade, under the GOP as well as the Dems. Call any doctor in your town and ask if he/she accepts new Medicare patients if you don't believe me.

But, do you want to also make the decision for me and my neighbors? That’s not ok with me.

I do not want to make that choice for you and your neighbors as long as you pay your own way.

But as soon as what has been spent on you by Medicare exceeds what's been paid in, then the money spent on your health care is money withheld from my paycheck under compulsion.

And then, yes, I do get a voice.

It’s way more than just the NHS that needs repairing.

“It’s way more than just the NHS that needs repairing.”

I couldn’t agree more. We’ve had 13 years of labour government and now have a Conservative led coalition which is doing it’s best to make those repairs whilst simultaneously introducing strict austerity measures to pay down our debt.

America has similar challenges but I believe the future of the world lies in the anglosphere sticking together, not fighting between ourselves so I try to balance any criticism of the US with a positive message. Your president clearly hates both the US and the UK and quite frankly posts like yours suggesting we need to be nuked from orbit do Obama’s work for him.

I realise we are not perfect, but the genocide of 60m people seems a little harsh for not always providing people with perfect healthcare when they have the freedom and responsibility to look after themselves. :)

I want to see the US end all ties (political, economic, diplomatic, military, etc.) because of how bad an influence the UK is on the US. The UK is on a bender to destroy itself and become a third world Muslim hellhole. I really don’t want to see that happen to the US.

Did you know that Obama is still a British citizen? Another blessing on the US from the UK! You can have your village idiot back. Please, take him. He’s done enough damage already!

Obama, the President of the U.S., Is Currently Also a British Citizen

I can see your opinions are emotional rather than logical or factual so there’s no point arguing with your misconceptions other than to say I fail to see how a country like the UK with a less than 3% muslim population, reducing muslim immigration and a 92% white anglo saxon celtic population is anywhere close to becoming a ‘muslim hellhole’. Apply the same test to the US and see who’s closer.

As for Obama and irrespective of his citizenship status, America voted him in as president, we didn’t. Who does that make the greater fool?

I didn’t vote for him. I absolutely knew this guy was really bad. And every day that Obama is in office his actions prove what I knew beforehand. 53% of the population voted for him but considering how much voter fraud there is I think it is about 10 to 20 percent less. You have dead people voting, multiple ballots cast by the same voter, non-citizens voting, felons voting and on and on.

I guess that’s fine with me, but you, of course, are authorizing me to make a choice about your health care also. I’m sure you’re fine with that but please reply anyway.

Well then we have something in common, I didn’t vote for him either but depite 53% of the American electorate doing so I don’t want you nuked from orbit. So far all you’ve convinced me of is that neither of our countries is perfect which I already knew as I’ve lived in both. :)

Absolutely!!!

If I'm getting my health care on the taxpayers' dime, it's perfectly appropriate for the taxpayers to say "We can afford to give you medication A, implant B, and surgery C, but to keep the program's budget balanced, we can't afford to give you surgery D."

As long as I can purchase D with my own money I am totally fine with that.

According to the non-MSM Obama is still a British citizen. And look how this boy king is screwing up America. If that is all the Crown has to offer...

And 56% of UK subjects just voted in the nutjob politician, George Galloway, again!
