US President Barack Obama says he is pushing for "a world without nuclear weapons", making direct appeals to North Korea and Iran.
He also pledged to work with Russia and China, speaking ahead of a summit in Seoul aimed at reducing the risk of nuclear terrorism.
He emphasised the US's unique position to seek change but said "serious sustained global effort" was needed.
The meeting is being attended by representatives from some 50 countries.

Using your kids as part of election strategy is something I find particularly offensive, since there is a strong tradition against even mentioning the children of politicians here until they reach adulthood. Or do something incredibly boneheaded, like getting caught drinking under age.

Mentioned before that a couple of my kids are seriously thinking of emigrating to the US. I’d sort of like to have something for them to run to, rather than running from the mess this country is becoming.
The only nukes Obozo intends to rid the world of are the ones we have. He is the worst enemy the US has ever had.
Well we have to look at this from Obamas desire to have office on the world stage...he's also campaigning for that...and there are some leaders who have already been lining him up for something, though it escapes me at the moment. Read it awhile back.

Frankly, I see nothing wrong with that particular statement. I don’t want to see kids growing up in a world with nuclear threats either.
The problem of course is that states like North Korea and Iran absolutely can’t be trusted. In fact, none but the western democracies and Israel, and maybe Japan and South Korea can be trusted, and those not terribly far.
But if an absolute no-cheat system can be set up to get rid of nuclear weapons, that would be a good thing. Extremely, extremely difficult. But I’m not prepared to say that it’s necessarily impossible. And if it could reasonably be done, it would be a very good thing.
And yes, a danger of course is what the poster in post 17 said. Unilateral disarmament isn’t anything we need.
If it could be done perfectly, I would agree wholeheartedly. I, like you (I assume) grew up during the pants-wetting stage of the Cold War, and I remember the fear.
But, as you say, several sitting at the nuclear table cannot be trusted. And think back - has any system anywhere not been subverted or evaded in under a week?

There is NOBODY that stupid on the entire planet. Therefore, one can only reach the conclusion that he is seeking unilateral disarmament of the US and our total defeat by nuclear annihilation.

I would, perhaps, be inclined to add India to that short list, as they demonstrated remarkable forebearance in the face of a direct act of war against their nation, in the attack on their national legislature some years back. A commendable act on their part, and indicates to me that they may be trusted with nuclear weapons, at least at present...

Obama claimed he grew up in school doing duck and cover exercises. Except he wasn’t in the United States attending school when that was still the drill.
In the 1970s on the Gulf, we’d line up in an interior hallway and shield are heads in tornado drills but no ducking under a desk or anything.
The man is dishonest and has fabricated his history. He also claimed his parents came together because of what happened at the Selma march. Years after Barry was already born.
That IS odd. we stopped duck and cover about 1968, IIRC. You guys stopped about the same time.

Ronald Reagan wanted this too. The difference is that Reagan sought peace through strength whereas Obama wants us to unilaterally disarm.
what do you expect from a man that lets his 13 yr old go off to Mexico by herself for spring break. His kids are nothing more than political tools for him. Seriously though what kind of parents let a 13 yr old go off on by herself for a vacation, regardless of the location.

As horrible as a nuclear war may be, the fact is that since they were created, there has not been a war between major powers (going on 70 years). I would argue that Korea and Vietnam were proxy wars and Desert Storm, Iraqui Freedom, Afganistan were 1 sided wars.
Prior to that we had WWII, WWI, War of 1870, Crimean War, Napoleonic Wars, 7 Years War...
Anyway, you can make the arguement that nuclear weapons (especially in American hands) have kept the peace.
Just forget the Truman Administration’s screwy idea of handing all of them over to the UN after WWII.

Yeah, a world without Nukes, just like we have cities without guns. When nukes are outlawed, only rogue nations will have them. Then, we’re all in trouble.
Our principal was ex RAF. Looked it up and they ceased being mandatory here in ‘63 - we are a tad closer to the “front lines” of the times than you guys, but he kept doing the drills until ‘68, when he retired.
