GOP's gas price politics could prove fleeting (Obama takes office $1.68, Obama now $3.88)
msnbc ^ | 3/27/20112 | Michael O'Brien

Republicans have in recent weeks waged an all-out blitz against President Barack Obama over the issue of gas prices, but the political benefit could prove fleeting, if and when fuel prices decline.

The steady rise in gas prices this spring provides Republicans with their most immediate example of the pocketbook fleecing suffered by voters, prompting the party to pounce. While some indicators point toward a tentative economic recovery -- which could be to the president’s political benefit -- the lost income associated with higher gas prices has led the GOP’s presidential contenders and leaders in Congress to complain that it’s Obama’s energy policies that have contributed to upped costs.

And from Republicans’ vantage point, Obama is on the ropes on the issue. They point to his energy tour last week, which included a stop at the southern portion of the Keystone XL Pipeline, as an example of the White House’s response to Republican pressure.

“The issue of gas prices is near the top now in terms of what we're hearing from people,” said Republican Colorado Rep. Cory Gardner. “President Obama wouldn't be taking credit for a pipeline he has nothing to do with unless he weren't feeling pressure that he's not doing enough.”

The point at which gas prices start to shut down our economy to my thinking at least is below $4/gallon and we’ve been at or above that point for over a year now. I don’t picture anybody forgetting this before November.

If this is the Republican idea of a “all-out blitz” its no wonder we are getting no where fast!

“I’m thinking that Obama will find a way to get those gas prices down before Election Day.”

I’d be interested in how he reduces inflation while increasing spending; a lot of the gas price increase has been mirrored in supermarkets. With the current job market and inflation, he stands no chance.

"GOP's gas price politics could be fleeting?"

What O'Brien and all of his sycophant, Obamabot, bros and sisters in the Lame Stream Media reallllly mean is they are hoping against hope that these high gas prices will not have any affect on the reelection of their Messiah and they all intend to do everything in their power to see that the poor sheeple are disabused of the notion that the Fascist, Neo-Commie is in any way responsible.

EVERYTHING is SKYROCKETING IN PRICE... EVERYTHING! Repair parts... appliance parts... food... clothing... electronic parts... copper... aluminum... and ALL of the products produced using them. Anyone that shops knows that we are in a depression... with government induced hyper inflation and massive unemployment but the media is of satan and obama and the dims are of satan... so do the lies that spew forth from hell surprise any thinking person?

LOL. I still remember reading on National Review (I forget the author) how we conservatives ought to be careful about criticizing Obama, just in case the stimulus worked.

First... the law of supply and demand is still in effect... so is gravity. Nothing will change the supply but the Strategic oil supply being tapped... and if he taps that... it will be a short lived and tiny change. obama wants these high prices and anything that he does to lower them... angers his base. Remember... our enemies are insane.

Yes... NR and the republicon party... (unlike we Conservatives who actually KNOW that our ideology works and that socialism has never worked... because we study History and take our past seriously... unlike the left... who love women's studies and racist degrees in hate) do not believe in Conservatism... they use it as a tool to lie to us and to try and convince us that they are what they claim to be... but there is very little difference in the way that republicans and dims govern... it is a matter of degrees... not direction. They run as Reagan and once elected... run away from Reagan. The gop/e and their minions are not our friends and they damned sure are not our allies.

Before gas prices decline in the fall, they will do a lot of damage to the economy. Its not a matter of voter’s memory...its more a matter of how many voters will be fully employed in an economy weakened by high fuel prices. Fuel is more than gasoline...its diesel fuel and Jet-A fuel, both of which impact the economy just as much as gasoline.

For this issue to be “off the table” during election season, prices will have to begin falling in June...not August/September.

Heating Oil prices will not be a factor in the elction cycle because the country does not heat with oil as much as 30-40 years ago. The major market for heating oil is in the northeast states which are Blue anyway.

I agree...the GOP has been quite docile on this issue. But, maybe thats for the best. Fuel prices are something that is "in the voters face' every day. They see fuel prices every time they pass a gas station and feel fuel prices every time the fill their tanks or buy groceries. Republican candidates don't need to appear as though they are cheering on high fuel prices...Let the blogosphere and talk radio do that for them.

There isn't a darn thing that 0bama can or will do to lower fuel prices. The only things that can lower fuel prices are reduced demand or resolution to the Iranian situation.

The president has hinted at a co-ordinated release of oil from the SPR and Saudia Arabia is sending a "wall of oil" to the US to beat down oil prices. Neither action has had a lasting affect on oil prices because the amount of oil is virtually insignificant in a 90 million bpd global market.

Even if “the one” gets gas prices down to reasonable prices, the damange is already done due the inflation in all other items which increased and will not decrese in price after a oil price drop. Obama needs high gas prices to balance his budget on the backs of the people through inflation’s hidden equalizing effect on money spent by the government. It is the same when our currency value drops after we have international trade and we repay the debt in devalued dollars.

Exactly…There is no amount of lies and deception by Obama and his media that would decrease the high anxiety and anger of the majority of voters due to high gas prices and the high consumer goods prices caused by high gas prices…

I’m thinking that Obama will find a way to get those gas prices down before Election Day.

He could do this with a well-timed perp walk of some Grrrrrreeeedy Oil Speculators that would have the effect of collapsing the futures market.

In the short term, and for a very brief time, prices would fall. Then we'd be in a world of hurt going forward. So if this is his strategy, precise timing is everything.

One problem with your thinking... to be the man... you have to beat the man... and one must attack the dims on every issue and at every opportunity and their attacks on us must be met with counterattacks that are tenfold. IF obama and the dims had left Bush alone and always depended upon the public to interpret events (rightly or wrongly) and reason their own well being against those events... obama would never have been elected and the dims would never have swept the government in 2006... but “new tone” is surrender by another name... and it does not smell like a rose. One thing... we can destroy them with the truth but all that they have are lies. One more thing... Newt is the only candidate that will do what I have suggested... mitt and Rick have both vowed not to.

No, that would not do it! Greeeeedy Oil Speculators have lawyers who would get the targetted individual off the hook. Also, oil is traded on markets overseas. If the US futures markets become unavailable to oil speculators then they would switch to the Hong Kong exchange...or some other exchange. One other thing to remember...eventually (after driving season) oil and gas prices begin to recede because oil speculators react to the reduced demand and bid those prices down. 0bama would need those speculators to be in place and active when that time comes...if speculators are pi#&ed off at him they might not be willing to reduce those prices in September/October when he needs them reduced.

The truth of the matter is that much of the runup in oil prices is due to the Fed and ECB printing so darn much money. At this point, all that money printing cannot be undone.
