Local Farmers Relieved Over House Vote
News Channel 5 - Nashville ^ | Mar 27, 2012 | Heather Graf

It's being called a bold move by Tennessee lawmakers - a vote that announces their intent to essentially ignore federal regulations regarding child labor on family farms.

That 70-24 vote came on Monday night.

State Representative Jeremy Faison sponsored House Bill 2669, and says he did so because he feels the new federal regulations being considered just don't belong in our state.

"My immediate reaction was my goodness! This will affect every farm in Tennessee," he said. "We put this bill together to let the Depart of Labor in Washington, D.C. know that they're so far overreaching that we can't go along with this, and that we won't fund it, we won't help them with it."

The U.S. Department of Labor is considering stricter rules regarding child labor in an attempt to keep kids away from some of the most dangerous farm jobs.

Local farmers agree with Faison, and feel it's a bad idea.

*snip*

Those state lawmakers opposed to House Bill 2669 expressed concern that Tennessee farmers could lose federal subsidies or funding, if the state refuses to comply with those regulations.

Lol! I am very aware of the complete lack of common sense on the left these days. I also know WHY they have no real common sense.

The Feds seem to love screwing with farmers' lives.

Ever notice farming is the first thing to suffer under any commie take over...if people can't sustain themselves they have no alternative but to rely on the government...

I’m glad TN is keeping out the Feds, but I am concerned about the number of immigrants in the cities.

That's definitely a big concern for us, too, as well as a lot of folks around here. The muslims aren't just in the cities - - they're in the smaller towns, too. I don't know if you saw any of the threads posted a couple of years or so back about the problems Shelbyville had with Somalis and Tyson foods. Shelbyville is not a large city.

Brigitte Gabrielle was in our area to speak last week and I was surprised to see the large crowd that turned out to hear her. The towns around here are all small and, obviously, a lot of folks share our concern.

But the problem isn't only in TN, sadly. It's everywhere and will be until something is done to slow down immigrants coming to this country. I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Neither of us have children but our friends do. The kids who worked on their parents’ farms seem to have more on the ball than the kids whose parents don’t own farms. Those kids all grew up hanging out in video arcades and such and most never had summer jobs of any sort.
Most of those kids are young adults now and when I take time to think about it, the two sets are definitely different.

Glad too see our lawmakers taking a stand. These are summer jobs for kids that either help them or their families. Most adults on farms won't have the kids fixing dangerous equipment like the baler. But at the same time lots of kids were in diapers riding on tractors with their parents. They've been around the equipment all their lives and know the danger. Adults are the only ones I've heard of being killed on them actually..

In the rural areas, like here, summer jobs for kids aren’t all that easy to come by in the retail outlets and such, so helping out on farms is where many go.
And you’re right. They aren’t out there working on the dangerous equipment. No farmer is going to put a child in harm’s way like that.

But they’ll put their kids on a tractor as soon as they’re able to reach the pedals. One of my fave pix of Hubby is of him driving a tractor at the age of 9.
My dad spent summers on a farm as a kid, and he said he started driving tractors at about the same age.

Not only do summer jobs on farms give kids some money in their pockets and instill good work ethics, but farmers hope it’ll give them a love for farming so the family farms can be handed down to the next generation. We certainly don’t need to discourage that. Without farms, how the heck are we supposed to eat? Stupid libs with their ridiculous ideas don’t think about that.
